Hey guys!

Was wondering if any of u guys know about the details regarding legal mods for p-plate drivers under the new P1,P2 laws in Victoria. (non-cosmetics mods)

The new laws say that I cannot have any "performance mods".

Do these include upgrades on breakes, suspension and adding a strut brace?

What about small mods like changing the stock filter into a pod filter?

It also says that I cannot change the exhaust. Does this include the muffler?

It'll be great if i could get detailed information on this; if not, information on where can i find detailed information on the problem because I can't seem to find the email for vicroads or the police to ask these questions ><.

Thanks heaps! Help appreciated :O

if ur p1 (the red ones) theres no modifications that can be done that increase hp.

so yes suspension upgrades are fine among anything else that dosnt increase hp.

u cant change the muffler because it has the potential to increase hp. no pod, no ecu, no injectors, no exhaust modifications wat so ever.

if your on your green Ps then the 125kw/tonne high powered rule ratio stil applies. and u can mod the shit out of your car as long as its legal. (arguable)

everything else you need to no is here.

in conclusion if your Green Ps, your f*ked

Red Ps, your really f*ked

stay away from modying until u hit ur fulls is the best bet. but if you think u can handle risking 1100 fines and 3 demerit points everytime u get pulled over, then good luck buddy.

ive been lucky enough, hopefully you are aswell.

when did you get your licence buddy?

this way we can tell u exactly what you can and wat you cant do

im a r3ed p plater now, changing to green in a week

as much as id love to mod the car to the shit and build it up

ive been pulled over and popped the bonnet that many times its not worth it

save it man

do your breaks/suspension etc.

then when your 20 save a bomb

and as soon as you 21st bday/p plates are over

go straight to a performance center and drop a bag of cash on the table

and you will appreciate the added power sooooo much more.

Muffler = part of the exhaust, therefore its modification to the exhaust, stands to reason that one.

Filter = again, performance mod? yes/no could be argued. There is no gain having a pod anyhow, stock airbox is fine

VSI 8 is not a good reference for current P-Platers as they are unable to modify cars to increase performance. So there is no legal way at all.

Shit, well i just got myself a '93 R33 and replaced the stock muffler cauz it was broken from the inside. Changed it to a cannon(cheap second hand one) cauz it would've cauzed me a bomb to import the original parts. Just miss the option of having before july 08 laws. So i have to go with the new p1 laws.

What should i do? pay a few hundred to replace my current exhaust with an original import part?

That is a fair enough statement about performance, but I linked it to also show other areas of modification eg. brakes and suspension.

I've read the official road-worthy book which goes into specific details on that VSI 8. Very informative :D

I guess u guys are right. It sucks that the P-Plates for the new laws last for a bloody 4 years tho.(1 red, 3 green). Thx for the advice :D , will probably do just that but still... what should I do with the non-stock muffler? problem.... :D

personally i recon a muffler you could get away with

the cop would really wanna be screwing you.'

the majority of cops wouldn't know anything about it but if 1 highway patrol car decides to check you :S

you could almost claim its just a cosmetic mod and that its not increasing any performance.

I have a super megaphone muffler on mine and its the only "mod" from experience the cops are more interested in whats under the bonnet and in the system of the driver.

The thing you can claim with the exhaust is that you had a rusted out muffler and needed it to be replaced so it didnt go over the 90dB limit. I wouldnt be too worried about it. With so many Skylines modified they probably wouldnt know what a factory exahust tip for them looked like.

Hahaha, so true. I havent really seen a skyline with stock exhaust tips in a long time. Anyway, thanks for the information guys; it was really helpful.

Those that got their license between 1st July 2007 and 30th June 2008 will have green P's and are not bound by the 125kw/tonne rule but the newer 'no turbo unless it's a diesel etc' rules. Just an added way of making things so much easier to follow...

i thought it was a no turbo on your red p's and people (such as me) that got their license after july 1st 07 :S

i'm sure i read that somewhere.. those who got their license prior to july 1st 07 have the power to weight ratio

    • Don't even try to run it on the stock ECU if you're going to have the boost controller bring boost above ~10 psi. I've already told you that. If you use the Nistune ECU, you will need to CAREFULLY read the available documentation for Neo tuning, and read some threads on the Nistune forums, to discover the various things you have to do to prevent the ECU from going bananas when the boost is too high. The is a table associated with th boost sensor that must be modified to prevent it from shitting the bed. This is just one of the things that you will need to do to the tune in Nistune, because the Neo turbo ECU will be expecting to see a number of things (such as the TCS) that are not there, and you have to block the DTCs on those. It is totally not surprising to me that you are having the problems that you are, but the solutions to these problems have been known for >15 years. So just get it done.
    • Hi. Sry iam not a mechanic and iam not at the car atm so i dont know 100% but they told they measure those and even try to change those. AFM they have two. Coils are new a they have my old one too. Plugs too. ECU...we have 25 NEO stock and Nistune 25 NEO.   But i dont know if any one those could be the problem and why/if/what can cause this, Only thing they did not check is fuel...but that walbro 255 is new(like 1,5 years)... That fuel pressure gauge idk...but i let them know Any suggestions?   EDIT: how can they know if it is like you say he ECU pull power when it reaches a specific boost level that is too high? Tha car has boost controler
    • Can you clarify what you mean by boost cut, do you mean it misfires both when under load (driving) and when stationary and out of gear? Or does the ECU pull power when it reaches a specific boost level that is too high (boost control issue)? Does it occur at idle with no throttle? When you say "the ECU is OK", what ECU is it and why do you think it is OK? Have you used the NEO ECU, and if so do you have a MAP sensor attached? Same for the AFM, why do you think it is OK? Do you have any way to put a fuel pressure gauge on it (even just a mechanical one between the fuel filter and fuel rail)?
    • Hi.. Just another problem. So maybe you can help. I(my mechanic) done swap from my RB20DE NEO to RB25DET NEO. Everything is OK but we have a boost cut. Coils/Plugs are ok...AFM is ok. ECU is ok. I have Walbro 255 but it "changed" sound few months ago(you can hear it ouside) you did not hear that when it was new(maybe faulty?) Sooo...what now? What can cause this boost cut? It is even when you standing still...
