As the title of this topic suggests, i want to know how to drag a car, to its maximum potential.

I've heard lots, about when to shift, 'flat-changing' etc. I just want to know what is the best way to take off, and follow through to get the most out of any car. (Manual ofcourse!)

THe problem is that i cop a lot of wheel spin. I'm young and inexperienced. So anyone with experience can help.....

Its all just practice. You've gotta "feel" when it starts to spin and balance the revs with the clutch. I usually change 6200-6500. I wouldnt recommend flat changing for the sake of the gearbox's life.

as mentioned it all depends on what u can do... when u decide to change... how u use ur clutch.... what revs u dump it from first.

in my car power peaks at around 6100 to 6200 so changing any later than that is really a waste of time as the power tapers off by 7000rpm... i hit max boost at 4100 so its a good idea not to stall the revs anywhere near that high or the wheels will just spin on the spot.

ive found in my car the ideal launch is at about 3500rpm... i normally dont floor it flat just hold it til i feel the car grip... once it grips i floor it and change it into second as hard as i can... rev out to about 7000 and change into third... by the time the revs hit about 7000 again im pretty much near the end of the qtr and just let it ring out to about 8500

Hey dude, this is a bit of experience i gain.

first, you have to know at what RPM, your car is achiving the max torque.......like for R34 GTT, about 3500 RPM, it reached its max torque. but different with what u have done for mod...........better u check through Dyno.

i don't really like the hand brake take off style, cause normally the drag place woule be flag enough, then keep the RPM at the range of max torque, then almost your clutch release point. your will achieve max power if u do this

don't worry too much about your clutch, of course it will damage, but as long as it is not over the limit, lets say better not over 4500 RPM, your clutch woun't burn out imme

Depends on the whether, type of road etc etc, but what I found to be good was find out at what rev your wheels don't free-spin. Rev it up to that and maintain it. When the 3 white lights come on (i'm assuming here that you'r not a fullsik mario that wants to race at the traffic lights) give it one little touch of throttle, then drop the clutch and pump the throttle, then hold every gear to the end of your boost RPM range then change gears (double clutch preffered but whatever you can do will also be OK) should work well and shouldn't see you destroying anything in the car.

Just remember, you not only get one guy jealous if you win a drag but you give yourself and your car a headache if you break somthing doing it.

    • If they can dyno them, get them dyno'd, make sure they're not leaking, and if they look okay on the dyno and are performing relatively well, put them in the car.   If they're leaking oil etc, and you feel so inclined, open them up yourself and see what you can do to fix it. The main thing you're trying to do is replace the parts that perish, like seals. You're not attempting to change the valving. You might even be able to find somewhere that has the Tein parts/rebuild kit if you dig hard.
    • Can you also make sure the invoices on the box (And none exist in the boxes) are below our import duty limits... I jest, there's nothing I need to actually purchase and order in. (Unless you can find me a rear diff carrier, brand new, for stupidly cheap, that is for a Toyota Landcruiser, HZJ105R GXL, 2000 year model...)  
    • Murphy strikes again! Nothing at all would have gone wrong if you had the tool kit in the car! You'd have just found the clamp loose the next time you went to touch it...
    • I have been being VERY quiet about what you're alluding to, as it is something that ticks me off... The number of cars from factory that run coil overs is HUGE! Most of them these days do... The other part that annoys me, is people saying "Well all the incabin adjustable suspension is illegal by blah blah blah"... If that's the case, then why can I buy a car brand new that can do it if, FULL STOP in cabin adjustable suspension is illegal...   Also, I could just chuck some aftermarket shocks in my car, throw the stock springs on, after my blue slip, dump my super low springs back in. Same shock and spring style setup... Hell, they could also be the same colour springs etc.     I'm voting, BlueSlipper didn't want to touch the above car for some reason. Whether it be some sort of bias against the car, the owner, them maybe having previously done dodgy shit and now they're being super careful in case they get slapped in the face by the Gumbyment again... Find a new blueslip place.   And can confirm as you had said, yes there are holy bibles of vehicle heights, and all sorts of other suspension stuff. Heck your run of the mill mechanic, and tyre shop has access to all of that stuff. It's how they do wheel alignments...
    • Funny story Heading to Sydney this morning on the HWY there was some slow traffic, so I gave it the beans and midway through my overtaking "power run" I lost all power It seems that I missed a hose clamp,  and the MAF and filter went WiFi To make this more problematic, the little tool kit that lives in the boot, is sitting in the sun room at Goulburn......LOL Luckily for me I found a bit of steel on the side of the road that could be used like a rusty and bent flat head screw driver to tighten it up enough that it got me into Sydney, it is now all tight like a tiger with the aid of a 8mm socket Note to self: Use my brain and double check stuff, and always keep that little tool kit in the car for when I have a brain fart
