I know I say this all the time but :google:... For a street/track tyre for the right price you cant go past the Federal 595RS-R - Street legal semi slick with 140 treadwear rating (which is lower than Falken and Bridgestone alternatives)... I use them as a daily driven tyre and can easily get up to 20 - 25,000kms from a set looking after them.

what are they like in the wet though?

how much per corner in what size?

Thanks for the info. Could you please tell me how much a set are and where i can source them in Melbourne. Looking at 18" to suit R34 rims. Would you recommend 45's or 35's ? Cheers.

RE-01Rs have a UTQG of 140 on some sizes. Bridgestones also don't have the same anecdotal reputation of delaminating under hard use. I know you commented in that thread, but Tim's not the only guy I've seen rip apart Federals at a track day.

To be fair (since I know you're quite touchy on the subject) I'm not disputing that you, your mates, and those drifters you mention don't destroy their Federals and that you're not guaranteed to blow out a Federal under hard use. The fact that a noticable minority do still indicates a certain level quality control compared to other brands who don't get the same comments from customers. All I'm saying is that its a comparative risk. But, since practically everyone here modifies their cars and exceeds the manufacturer's recommendations that risk may not be a deterrant.

However, Federals tend to be significantly cheaper than the alternatives. For street only use I would personally consider them.

Like other people have said, I'd prefer to run specific track rubber and dedicated street tyres. Heat cycling your tyres after a track day makes them rubbish when cold, so even if you have plenty of rubber left above the indicators the tyres will won't grip the same.

Compared to other semi slicks on the market, they're quite good in the wet... I find them quite predictable as long as you remember that you're driving on a semi slick tyre.

Have a look on the www.federaltyres.com.au for your local dealer, they can give you a price fitted an balanced.

I cant quote you any prices on here but try the "dealer locator" function on the website (above), I would probably recommend 255/35R18's.

I understand that there are always going to be people who have a bad run with Federals because there are people who have a bad run with ANY brand of tyre, I have personally talked to dozens of people who have been very unhappy with other brands (that I wont mention) aswell as people who have been unhappy with Federal, I can be almost certain that I have heard just about every story there is when it comes to tyres delaminating, wearing unevenly, punctures etc. as it is my job to constantly research the market and find out what is happening in the world of tyres (I work for the national importer/distributor for Federal Tyres).

You might say that I am touchy on this subject, but I prefer to say that I am simply putting to rest any myths, rumours or uneducated opinions that arise due to bad experiences with the tyres, too often someone will make a statement that a certain tyre is badly made and has low quality control when they havent done their homework and inturn other people jump on the band wagon and start rubbishing the brand... Thats how bad brand perception starts, I'm here to make sure that people have the right information. Thats all.

Youre correct in saying that there was an issue with delamination of the 595 series, however - that was the earliest release of the 595's and since then Federal have redesigned the tyre with better tread compounds and casings to help improve the tyres heat resistence.

However - the 595RS and RS-R have always proved to be very reliable on and off the track, I have only ever once seen a delamination on an RS and that was because the tyre was damaged due to hitting the sharp upper edge of a ripple strip at high speed.

Youre welcome to use whatever tyres you like, but you have to realise that there are also other people who like using brands that you dont.

I am a big fan of the federal semi. I have used it for track and found it to be far and away better than the best street tyre. There are semi's that will out do it but, as an all round tyre it cant be beaten. 20/25 kay including track, street and skidpan work Is as much as i am prepared to ask of any tyre, semi or street. Heck if you took wheelspin in to account i am sure the rears have probably done double that. ;)

    • You know what, I am enjoying your updates, but I have to say it is pretty poor form to walk into a shop that is paying for space and stock on the floor, try all their seats to work out what you are happy with, then buy somewhere else. If everyone did that the shop will be out of business with no opportunity for anyone to try a seat before buying. 👎
    • Good work, and thanks for posting up your solution for future people!
    • Yeah mate that’s the plan, I just want something I can have fun in and work on during weekends.  There’s really only 1 road fit to drive the car on and luckily is been redone recently.  I do want to tune it next year sometime, no dynos here so I’m looking at an ECU that can be remote tuned.
    • Initially I thought having a pair of Recaro seats would be a big bonus, it turns out these do get a little uncomfortable on long journeys (my fault, not the seat). I had a look through the GSM Performance website at reclining seats and booked an appointment to visit their show room. I got the Recaro Sportster CS for the R34 from here, was very happy with the service received so of course a re-visit was in order. Unfortunately the two Corbeau seats I had chosen aren't on display but they had 4 other options available. Two seats dug into my back, one dug into my legs and the other was perfect. I also found out that Recaro seats use a larger bolt pattern so some adaption was required. Luckily GSM offer some universal adaptors that should solve this problem. I searched the interwebs for price comparisons and Corbeau themselves were the cheapest at £300 cheaper (for the pair). I asked GSM if they could price match, unfortunately they couldn't. I later received an email saying Corbeau would honour them the same discount, but the purchase was already made. I did however order the brackets from GSM, both arrived on the same day. I started with the passenger side seat, knowing this was going to be a little trial and error. There are 3 mounting holes at the front and 2 at the rear on these JURAN Racing seat rails.  With the adaptor brackets mounted, the allen cap bolts started to push into the seat, NOT GOOD!  The rear mounting holes lined up but there were issues at the front. The holes were 1/2 hole out, so the brackets got a tickle with the drill to modify the holes. The supplied bolts weren't going to be long enough and a spacer was needed to stop the adaptor bars from bending. A local fasteners company supplied be with some nylon spacers and longer bolts (M8x30, although these will be replaced with 35mm long shortly) A before and after I pre-drilled the front bracket before making a start on the driver's seat to save some time. And in no time at all that was in the car too. The all black seats have transformed the interior and these are MUCH more comfortable. The only downside with the new Corbeau seats is I sit a little higher, but I'll happily accept that over discomfort. The Youtube video can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPyttKPktXA
