(posted this also in the Naturally aspirated section, thought id post here since its a VIC thing)

just looking for some clarification.

looking at getting new rims (need em bad) and looking around. most 17s/18s are 7-8" wide. thing is, my current stockies, as stated by the placard are 6" wide, and im in Vic, and the restriction is stated as being "more than 25mm greater than the widest wheel specified by the vehicle manufacturer for that model or vehicle series" to be compliant.

now, thing is, take a R33 GTR for example, they came with 17x8? inch wheels, correct me if im wrong someone. now they came from the same series, so would that mean that legally the max diamatre would be 9"? for any car of that series, including mine.

just looking for some answers, and if anyone out there has actaully fitted wide rims to their non-turbos, let me know. it should save me a bit of trouble in the long term.

cheers

inside your door jam there should be a tyre placard, it will have the rim size on there and when checked they will go off that size, dont bother pulling it off either as it is a roadworthy item and you can get defected for not having one.

well i have a gtr tyre placard thingy on my gtst so i guess my restrictions based on taht. id be well surprised to see an officer pull the measuring tape out for tyre widths.

Get your self a GTR placard if your worried about the size.

These are available brand new from Nissan. Give Ferntree Gully Nissan a call, they will be able to help.

But honestly I really don't worry about this on my car, I have 18x9.5 all round with +20 offset on my gts-t. So many cars have big wheels these days, I think the cops tend to look past this and worry about mods to the engine/ suspension more. When ever they pull me up they go strait for my bonnet not my wheels.

there could also be insurance issues, even if the police don't pull you up on it, an insurance company might if you ever make a claim.

i was looking around at my car (r33 gtst) for the same thing, the one inside the door jam only had some tyre sizes and wasn't really helpful. The sticker with the wheel widths was stuck in my glovebox, and it had the gtr size on there (17x9). look in there and check, i'd be confident going 1 inch wider than the widest on the sticker.

they dont neccesraily have to measure the tyres to tell, they could just read what size is printed on the tyre and compare it to the placard.. maximum width stated to be 215, so theoretically 225 is my max. then again the idea of replacing the placard with one off a GTSt/GTR is a good one.

anyone here fitted 18x7.5 rims to their line? howd they fit and what offset were they...ones im quoted are 18x7.5 with +38 offset.

cheers

Hey mate.

Anything less than 8in wide looks way to skinny. 33's will easily fit 8in front and 9in rears with an offset in the 30's.

Have a read of this thread and see what some people are running. Nobody likes skinny skylines. Fat is better! :(

BTW. GTR rims are 9in wide so you should be safe with 9's however I have heard that staggers rims are not legal. ie. 8in front 9in rear.

I've always run staggered rims on my car and never even given it 2 thoughts.

I tried my 17 x 9.5's (+18 I think) on the rear of my 33 and she was a no go, how did you get those under there????

thats true but usually if theyre going to that much trouble your gonna get done for something technical even if its something really minor like babyseat anchors and turbotimers, etc. I guess your just minimising your risks. In my experience of getting pulled over, they never once checked the widths only tread..touch wood..ha

i have 18x8.5 and they fit fine, just have to make sure you get the right offset, no idea what my offset is as i bought them new and did not have to worry about that stuff.

    • just an update to this, poor man pays twice  Tried sanding down the pulleys but it didnt do the trick. Chucked another second hand alternator in the na car which I got for free off my mate and its fixed the squelling. Must have been unlucky with the bearings.    As for my turbo car, I managed to pick up a cwc rb alternator conversion bracket + LS alternator for 250 off marketplace, looked to be in really good nick. Installed it , started the car and its not charging the battery.... ( Im not good with auto elec stuff so im not sure if this was all I needed to do but I verified such by using a multimeter on the battery when the engine was running and I was only getting 12.2v )   I had to modify the earth strap for the new LS alternator , factory earth strap was a 10mm bolt which did not fit the bolt on the LS alternator which was double the size so I cut it off , went to repco bought some ring terminals that fit, crimped it onto the old earth strap and bolted it up to the alternator , started the car and same issue. Ran like shit and was reading 12.2 at the battery.  For a "plug and play" advertised kit thats not very plug and play but alas.  My question is , am I missing something ? Ive been reading that some people recommend upgrading the stock 80 amp alternator fuse to a 140 amp but I dont see how that would stop the alternator charging especially at idle not under load.  Regardless ive pulled it out and am going to get it bench tested by an auto elec tomorrow but it would be handy to know if ive missed something silly or have done something wrong.
    • My wild guess is that you have popped off an intake pipe....check all of the hoses between the turbo and the throttle for splits or loose clamps.
    • Awesome, thanks for sharing!
    • To provide more specific help, more information is needed. What Android screen? What is its wiring diagram? Does the car's wiring have power at any required BAT and ACC wires, and is the loom's earth good?
    • So, now all you need to do is connect the 2 or 3x 12v feeds into the unit to permanent 12v, ACC 12V and IGN 12V that you can find in the spot behind the stereo, and the earth, and then it will switch on with the car.
