R34 Gtr Rims - Brake Clearance

Just preparing myself for an eventual brake upgrade on the 32 GTR. So I'm looking to divest myself of 16 & 17 inch rims and looking to accumulate some 18s....(which in its self might be a discussion).

For now I'd like to know if these rims have good brake clearances? e.g. 355mm rotors? I saw some TE37s on the weekend that were 18s and they cleared some Alcons about that size, so wondering if they have more caliper clearance than the OEM R34 GTR rim or if they are similar.

Anyone with experience of these rims with this size of brake?

I have some 355mm rotors on CSC calipers and the R34 rims clear them no problems. I have CE28s now as well and they have pretty much the same clearance as TE37s.

The R34 rims do have less clearance though than the CE28's or the TE37's as the Ray's rims will take up to 380mm rotors. The R34 rim clearance issue relates to internal diameter only, they have heaps of lateral clearance.

Thanks for that. So, the internal diameter of the R34 rims is less due to their design despite the fact that the external diameter is the same?

Yes, they are very good forged wheel, just not designed for large caliper/rotor combinations.

Upto 365mm which is the common size for say the Alcons still fit.

I'm running 375mm and they don't fit with the R34 rims (but do fit with some other 18" rims like TE37's and LMGT4's)

Surely you jest. I tried the CSC's with the R34 rims and they didn't fit with 365mm rotors. They must have higher a caliper height than the ALCON.

Right. 375 is a MASSIVE rotor right? I'm guessing 365 would be way larger than anythingf I'd need.

I had a chat with someone 'in the know' last night and they confirmed exactly this. Up to 365mm Alcons in the R34 rims and up to 380mm with TE37s etc.
