Yeah a mate just suggested it might be the cat blocked.... my dump front and cat are all welded together... i checked the other end of it when i pulled it off the other day and it seemed alright.. i had to turn it upside down and bang it on the concrete and the old turbo wheel and sh!t came out but maybe it did more damage?? completely blocked it up?? That would make it have massive backpressure and not be able to spool up right?

didnt think of that, could have leftovers from the old turbo lodged in the cat

anyways as someone already said... and i know its simple an more then likely not this, but is ur boost gauge connected properly? i.e when under vacum the hose is sucking itself into a sealed position on the back but then when it makes boost its blowing off so that its not sealing.

dare say that blockage in the exhaust is a good one

If the wheel has hit the honeycomb material in the cat there is a fair chance its done some damage. It can very easily collapse and be pushed to the rear of the cat where it becomes lodged.

Cut the cat off, fair chance your problem could be lodged there :)

ahh well i just spent a few hours pulling the dump and cat off... i smashed all the honeycomb out and stuck the hose through it (closest thing i could find) and the nozzle came out the other end of it... so there's no restriction in that.. and the side of the cat i could see (catback side) was fine.

Started the car up.... no difference... same thing...............................................................

sorry to hear that, did you check/try to tighten the comp wheel while you had the dump off?

i know this might sound a tad silly as its so bvious but have ya checked the exhaust wheel coz without one you wont be makin boost?? or ur exhaust wheel may be damaged so its not makin boost??

I was actually in such a hurry to start it up with the cat hollowed out that i started bolting it back on and forget to look up at the exhaust wheel... but it will be the same as it was when it was off a day before... yes there is an exhaust wheel.... i've also though that... coz i had to drive home when i blew the old one and yeah kinda feels the same... just not pouring smoke out like it did with the blown one.

The front wheel on the old turbo had 2 blades that were very slightly chipped... i'm not sure if that was done at the same time or if it was from ages ago... I don't think that would have done much though?? What do you's think??

I just can't accept that it's the turbo... it's 100km old (then previous car got written off) and looks immaculate/spins really well... the wheels aren't rubbing on the housing or anything... no noises... I'm at witts end with it I don't know whether to just take it to a shop or...

Err no it doesn't... that's a steel wheel and you can tell it's been highflowed and bored out because both the wheels are way bigger than standard and on the standard turbo there is a raised edge around the exhaust wheel... whereas this one is level.. only way they can do it without changing housings.

Is it even possible for the exhaust wheel to be spinning on the shaft?? That can't even get tightened by the looks of it.. If it can I have no idea how to anyway.. If i try and spin the front one way and the back the other it doesn't work... and there's no up/down side to side play or anything like that so...

from what you said the old turbo comp wheel didnt break apart so that shouldnt have blocked up the cooler. oil from the old turbo can block it up if seals went.

where does your boost gauge get its pressure signal from? before the cooler or after?

no its not possible for the turbine/exhaust wheel to spin on the shaft, but it is possible for the comp wheel if not torqued/assembled correctly to spin on the shaft.

take the turbo off, and take it to someone who fixes them or can have a look. i would be able to suggest someone here in sydney/woolongong. but your in townsville.

if the turbo spins freely when it was out of the car, and everything has gone back on correctly

its either going to be something very very silly. or as people have said the turbo isnt right..

    • It's funny, as Ive seen plenty of people use them in cheap builds on YT. And they actually go okay, even though a lot of other maxspeedingrods stuff is terrible. Those turbos seem reliable enough, the only part being, a good quality turbo that is "identical" to it, will out perform it day in and day out. In both a lower boost threshold, and the ability to flow more air at the same boost pressure. As a cheap cheap replacement, not a terrible choice. For cheap and shouldn't blow in a day, not terrible (like other eBay/Temu turbos) for low cost and still decent performance, that's where the question comes in to play from the results I've seen. I'd actually find it hilarious to buy one, and strap it to a paddock basher or some other cheap as POS originally NA car, and send it to the moon!
    • The maxpeedingrods turbo is cheap and bolts on to stock parts. I think you just need a bigger silicone coupler for the intake. Its a cheap china turbo, but it's been running on mine for almost 3 years at 16-19 psi.
    • What do they look like right after you've tried to start it with everything connected? Also post photos of what they actually look like.
    • Also wanted to say, my new spark plugs are blackened looks like it's very rich. I have splitfire coilpacks but stock coilpack loom and ignitor. I tried directly grounding the ignitor ground to body as well.
