Hey guys

I'v had my skyline now for about 6 months, I really love it, drives nicely and my misses loves it :)

2 weeks ago I had an alarm installed by autobarn. They did a good job it works well and they didnt leave to much of a mess... haha.

I took it back 2 days later becuase I noticed a rattle near the ignition (They put a hole near my ignition for LED light). They said they fixed it.

Tonight, driving home on a smooth road, I could hear the rattle... God its shitting me off. It sounds like a screw is just sitting somewhere, completely out of its socket. Just sitting there.

I ain't going back to autobarn as its a fair drive away to be told they have already fixed the rattle... Any tips on where to look and any tips on taking off panels. I'v never taken a single panel off the car as my interior is very clean and I dont want to snap any clips etc... Any tips/suggestions at all is appreciated... A bit stuck on what to do next.

maybe you can try knocking the area where you hear the rattle to make sure that it is a screw when the car is stationary. If it is, try to locate it and removing panel off the car and DIY is not a bad thing afterall. you will learn more at the same time. :blush:

just be careful with the clips around.

Good Luck. :)

I have tried bumping the dash, the wheel and all around that area... nothing... Iv even tried shaking it pretty hard lol... dont want to do it to hard though... Nothing...

This rattle is a stealthy little rat :@

And yeh, I'm definitley not keen on going back to autobarn...

under ur steering wheel there r 4-5 screws... undo them, move the steering wheel column down as far as it will go and unclip the cover around the ignition... its very easy... perhaps u mite c something thats loose?

ah thanks for that gumflapper... I will try that in the morning becuase I oringally held the keys while driving becuase I thought that was the rattle (The new alarm remote)...

Cheers for the mini tut hehe... will try that in the morning; I bet you are spot on! cheers again

put the drivers seat right back, get down on your back with a torch and shove your head next to the throttle pedal and look upwards. you might see something thats loose, if no luck, start tearing stuff apart and do what gumflapper said.

They did leave lots of shit in my steerwheel the scumbags lol... But none of that heavy enough to make that sound

After driving last night, sounds more like its coming from the right air vent... the one between the driver right and the demisters (just above the driver right)... I took out the plastic cover and shoved my hand in as far as I could go but nothing... Will have to take off the plastic face...

will go look for the DIY now

I'm a rattle NAZI. Find an audio installer (not a workshop, they most likely won't want this fiddly work) who is confident with Skyline interiors, or at least rattles in general but before giving him the car, go find a section of road where you can make the noise happen. Then take the guy out on the road and show him and ask him to fix it. Unless you have shown someone the sound/problem, you can't be certain they fixed it.

By the way, those air vents DO start to rattle, it's a foible of skylines (and other cars I've owned). My audio guy reduced it a lot, can't remember how tho

I took off the facia and played around in there... I thought I found it (The corner of the plastic odometre) and glued that down... Not the rattle... god I really hate rattles now lol.

Looks like Id have to take the dash off... I really don't want to do that if possible.

Does anyone have any pictures of the right hand side without the dash and facia... I would really appreciate that.

Here is where the rattle sound is...

rattle.jpg

(Bumping the dash and wheel etc... dont cause the sound to appear... you need to be driving over very small bumps/vibrations)

Quote from a drift battle or hpi -

"The first thing I do when I get a new car is install a really loud stereo so I dont hear any of the creaks."

If you can't hear it, there is nothing wrong :P Mind you I think he was reffering to the lovely creaks thanks to having no sound deadner, cage installed, 2 way diff and solid suspension.

I would really appreciate it if anyone could get me a photo of that area I showed... preferably taken from the top if possible...

I think the rattle is coming more from the back of the dash now... if I had a photo I think I would be able to pick what it is.

cheers

Some annoying rattles & squeeks can be diminished or even eliminated by using 'Silicon Spray' with its little red straw attached.

If Auto**** disturbed or removed/replaced any fitments around the dash, they sometimes don't sit the way they did before.

Try it and see 'er hear!

Tez

yah thats the idea... I'm ready to use it... when I can find it! But I can't see everything that could possibly be making that noise. Thats why I am asking for the pic

I saw some pics on a DIY dash removal on the sau forums, but I couldn't see that area of the dash very well.

Looks like nothing but a vent is in that area anyway :S

Someone soon is going to put up a Post where...

he suggests that you do what FloydWestwood (aka David) said in #9, but do it whilst your GF is driving it.

All 5 senses now come into PLAY!

Hearing = use a stethascope (I can lend you one from the pharmacy)

Sight = Look Up

Touch = Feel Around

Smell = N/A

Taste = N/A

Oops, looks like someone's doing it! :cool:

ah... got rid of the rattle... The rattle came from outside the car. Took off the black casing that is below the windscreen wipers...

There is a glued strip of rubberish plastic that goes between that casing and the window. The last 4-5 inches (the drivers side) was not glued on properly... reglued and rattle completely gone.

Can't beleive it was that becuase everyone agrees the sound came from the inside vent near the steering wheel. hah

Cheers for everyones help! Much appreciated! ;)

    • As far as I can tell I have everything properly set in the Haltech software for engine size, injector data, all sensors seem to be reporting proper numbers.  If I change any injector details it doesnt run right.    Changing the base map is having the biggest change in response, im not sure how people are saying it doesnt really matter.  I'm guessing under normal conditions the ECU is able to self adjust and keep everything smooth.   Right now my best performance is happening by lowering the base map just enough to where the ECU us doing short term cut of about 45% to reach the target Lambda of 14.7.  That way when I start putting load on it still has high enough fuel map to not be so lean.  After 2500 rpm I raised the base map to what would be really rich at no load, but still helps with the lean spots on load.  I figure I don't have much reason to be above 2500rpm with no load.  When watching other videos it seems their target is reached much faster than mine.  Mine takes forever to adjust and reach the target. My next few days will be spent making sure timing is good, it was running fine before doing the ECU and DBW swap, but want to verify.  I'll also probably swap in the new injectors I bought as well as a walbro 255 pump.
    • It would be different if the sealant hadn't started to peel up with gaps in the glue about ~6cm and bigger in some areas. I would much prefer not having to do the work take them off the car . However, the filler the owner put in the roof rack mount cavities has shrunk and begun to crack on the rail delete panels. I cant trust that to hold off moisture ingress especially where I live. Not only that but I have faded paint on as well as on either side of these panels, so they would need to come off to give the roofline a proper respray. My goal is to get in there and put a healthy amount of epoxy instead of panel filler/bog and potentially skin with carbon fiber. I have 2 spare rolls from an old motorcycle fairing project from a few years back and I think it'd be a nice touch on a black stag.  I've seen some threads where people replace their roof rack delete with a welded in sheet metal part. But has anyone re-worked the roof rails themselves? It seems like there is a lot of volume there to add in some threads and maybe a keyway for a quick(er) release roof rack system. Not afraid to mill something out if I have to. It would be cool to have a cross bar only setup. That way I can keep the sleek roofline that would accept a couple bolts to gain back that extra utility  3D print some snazzy covers to hide the threaded section to be thorough and keep things covered when not using the rack.
    • Probably not. A workshop grade scantool is my go to for proper Consult interrogation. Any workshop grade tool should do it. Just go to a workshop.
    • In my head it does make sense to be a fuel problem since that is what I touched when cleaning the system. When I was testing with the fuel pressure gauge, the pressure was constantly 2.5 bar with the FPR vacuum removed. When stalling, the pressure was going up to 3.0 bar (which is how it should be on ignition).
    • ECUtalk pages don't mention they support the ABS computer (consult port has more than one CAN), so you might just need a different scan tool. But, I would expect ABS is a different light to the brake warning/handbrake light, do you see an ABS light come on for a few seconds when you turn the key from ACC to IGN? But since you said: I'd have a look at the ABS sensors in the rear hubs to make sure they are not damaged, disconnected etc.
