Hi all,

ive been having some on going issues with my AFM's on my R32 GTR for a little while now (havent had the money to fix). i pulled the top one off just to have a look if there was anything obvious. there wasnt, so i gave it a clean and threw it back on the car. now when i go to start the car it wont fire. all that hapens is it cranks but wont fire up.

so im just wondering if the AFM would actually cause it to not start like this, or could there be another problem? as far as i can see, i havent left anything off when i put it back together.

any help on the matter would be greatly appreciated.

cheers,

matty.

- Run a diagonostic code from your ECU.

- If you suspesct its the AFM, open it up and check for dry solder joint (there is a guide in the DIY section)

- Check sparkies, Coil Packs

- Check fuel pump

cool.

i just put a set of splitfires in last week, and plugs a couple of weeks prior to that, so i hope its not them...

i think the fuel pump is ok. it fires up when ignition is on, then when im cranking, i can smell it from the engine bay...

im going to have a look at the DIY section.

just out of interest, there isnt an earth wire that attaches to the AFM that i might have mist is there?

well ive replaced the afm's, but to no avail. she is still dead to the world. i really dont know where to go from here. ive checked for spark, fuel, and ive checked every single fuse in the car. i even disconnected the battery for 10 minutes to see if it would reset the computer, but no dice there either.

im running a power fc (no hand controller), is there some way of doing a code check to see if there is a fault with the system?

other than that, i am at a loss...

PLEASE HELP ME!!!!

cheers, matty.

Hi Matty, the first and easiest thing to try would be the ECU itself. If you still have the standard item install it and see if you have any luck. Failing this, and without a diagnostics machine it's simply a game of elimination. A few other common items that will cause this are:

  • Cam Angle Sensor (CAS)
  • Ignition Module

PFCs don't have a "reset" mode, like the factory ECU does.

How old is the battery? Do you have enough "juice" to get it started (try jumping from another (running) car). (I had the problem of not wanting to fire, even with a battery pack. Needed a jump.)

unfortunatley i dont have the factory ecu. ive checked the ignition module and its fine. is there a way to test the cam angle sensor?maybe with a multi meter or something?

the battery itself should be fine, i put it on charge overnight but it made no difference.

im really stuck on this one... :D

    • Whilst the brewery had good beer, I didn't rate the pork knuckle, the meat was good, but, there was no crackling, the skin was just thick and chewy Will return at some stage for the beer, but, I will wash the beer down with chips Plus, no sauerkraut, in what world do people serve pork knuckle without sauerkraut, they did serve apple slaw with it, which was nice, but.......#sauerkraut the world
    • Wow yeah ok. Given how specific you are about your car, I'm very surprised you are happy to do that.  As a bare minimum, without having a wideband gauge in the car or running it up on the dyno to check mixtures, there is no way I'd do that to my car.  You beat me to it, was going to say just this.
    • Yeah - that's not true. Larger turbos flow more at the same boost. By definition. I've always found it funny when the claim of same flow same power because same boost is made. The turbine is larger, therefore will put up a lower restriction to flow at any given flow, cf the stock one. Hence, you need less boost to make the same flow through the whole system. Hence, when you have the same boost as before, you must have more flow. -5s are a pretty decent bit bigger than stock.
    • That's basically how I've been driving my R33 for a while now. GTIII-SS running wastegate boost. It makes no more power than stock because the turbos aren't flowing any more air than stock. Eventually though I need to fix this so it can actually drive as it should.
    • If this was my own car, I would pull about 5 degrees off the CAS, run a wideband, and if that seems ok, send it.
