Need to find out how hard it will be to change from my gt30 turbo on my rb20

that is a top mount manifold and external wastgate too the tdo6s L2 8cm turbo?

im not too sure on all the flange sizes of my turbo setup as the car is getting a make over.

and is it possible to just buy the tdo6 with out the full kit? and anyone know price for just the turbo?

Ball park figures... Turbo $2200. Remove, modify and re-fit your top mount manifold with correct 3 bolt flange will be about $400-600 including new gaskets. Then you will have to modify your dump pipe, water and oil lines, and intercooler piping so throw another $500 easy at it.

I would think a 3071 with a 0.63 A/R exhaust housing is effectively a bolt on option. Hell even cheaper again would be to just try a smaller exhaust housing on your current turbo....first things first though you really need to find out eactly what turbo your currently have. There should be a tag on the centre cartridge that would help suss it out

If i was in Vic i would let you take my car for a spin but am OS with work at present. Perhaps hunt down someone else running the TD06, it woudl be a shame to go to all that expense and find you were not happy. Isnt your motor a built motor? What compression did you end up with?

Maybe one of SAu's turbo propellar heads can compare the size and trims of the wheels of the two respective turbos. The TD06 seems to work well on the RB20, but if the wheel sizes are about the same then you can expect the same ball park sort of performance. Have a chat with RE Customs, i am sure he has seen TD06 SR20s and he has a 3071 on his SR20 so may be able ot help you make in informed decision

ok yeah just seems like the tdo6 is way better all over any other turbo for this power

its definately proven itself the 3071r doesnt convice me yet but its still an option just wanna way it all up first

my turbo has a .63 rear. and yeah my engine is completly rebuild with forgies ect ect not sure on compression?

from what rob has told me at sabbadin my engine is a pretty good build compared to others he's seen but then again i know nothing about engines and just put my trust in him.

he said a 3071 would be good and told me from the tag that my turbo is like a 3540 or something in that range

the car is getting painted atm i will have it back this week so i can check the tag again for the spec's on it

just hard to go against whats been proven all the data ive looked at shows tdo6 is clear winner for power on the 20

anyway i wil go see ray at RE and ask about the 3071r im sure ill be happy with it if i bolt it up.

i would be happy with mine apart from late spooling of it.. for the power im making after de-tuning i might as well have gone with the 2530

i want a minimum 250 255kw all day every day if it came on earlier with my setup like the tdo6/3071r i would make the 260kw after the detune easy

I know that TD06's are used on Evo Lancers and Rexes though the Rex ones are not reverse rotation like the I think E4-9 are so a bit more conventional .

GT Pumps here in Australia make up Mitsy based turbos based on the Trust spec TD06 SL2 turbine though I wouldn't think they would be super responsive things on RB20's with bigish turbine housings .

I'm not sure what is available for the upper end of the TD04's (TD04HL) and TD05H turbine housing wise but some OEM Volvo IW housings have a mount flange that is similar to single inlet "T3" .

In TD04HL there are 6 and 7cm housings and I believe 7 and 8 for TD05H .

If it were me I'd be more concerned about the boost threshold and having a reasonably wide effective power range , something getting on song at ~ 5 is a bit much I think .

Roy I think you've mentioned at times that HKS GT-RS turbos (RB spec) work pretty well and are a bit easier to fit not having the external gate .

Thats what I think I'd be looking into .

Cheers A .

    • The issue now is the 'fuel cut' while driving, and when it happend, it does not stall. This, I did not test the fuel pressure while driving as I cannot with a fuel pressure gauge. I do have Nistune logs, yes. I have also replaced the MAF Sensor.   Also related to the FPG Fuel Hanger – I just realized that I need a Deutsch Crimp Tool to crimp some cables for the FPG Fuel Hanger. Need to purchase additional cables as the kit only included 2, which are for the float. FPG has not responded to my emails so far since purchasing. I thought about taking it to someone and having it done professionally, but I am reluctant since everyone I took it to messed up in some way.
    • There's a good German place in Brisbane if youre up for the drive 😛
    • The German place in Cabramatta was rock solid, fresh pretzel cooked to order back then. Then it went all quiet, after all the poker machines were removed, then I believe it closed for good. I did drive past the other week and noticed outdoor lighting a big screen, but no idea what is there now.
    • Yeah I suspect even if you hold airmass per cycle/cylinder constant if you get too far away from stock you're still going to have problems running the factory tune within the bounds of the factory load scale. Cams, different displacement/rod ratio, etc. I'm just lucky that the GTIII-SS with wastegate boost + CA compliance cats is pretty much equivalent to stock turbos. When I have actual space I can finally get it tuned and modify the fuel system for flex fuel to 100% handle any detonation concerns when cranking the boost to whatever those dinky turbos can put out.
    • I would say no, why, because my daughter, who also lives in Goulburn, hasn't recommended us going there Pity, as we miss all the German joints around in Sydney, actually, the restaurants are the only thing I really miss about Sydney, and a special mention to Ishibanboshi at Bondi Junction, their Kara-age Don is heart cloggingly deliciousness (always added a special boiled egg...or 2) 😋
