808... wasn't that duncans number one year? still i wouldn't mind the AP brakes. the condition of the body suggests they weren't used hard (enough). d'oh!

dad went to check that car out for parts, it's a wreck. it's been left out in a paddock for 2 years with all the windows smashed in. let along all the body/chassis damage

yeah I guessed as much. nothing much on it would be worth keeping. shame, he should have just sold the wreck straight away 2 years ago. might have got 10-$15K for it.

^^^ Way to go out in style!

Nismo: So you've raced older 911's before, or currently? If so, what did you think of them overall, and what were costs like?

In the past I have. I personally wouldn’t try and build one; in my past dealings specialist workshops are extremely expensive to prep them. But who isn’t with any race/club car preparation.

I’d be looking at picking up something along the lines of what’s been posted on my105 or seeing what’s for sale at the Porsche Club track days.

I’d obviously encourage you to steer clear of anything with a 915 gear box, my driving probably has a lot to do with my hate and financial expense those devil boxes have created.

That and 2.7lt motor’s, think of the 3.0lt’s as the “rb20” like a good rev to keep them going, where as the 3.2lt’s are more of an “rb25”. A bit docile power comes off up high. We had some 964 cams put into a 3.2lt we had and it made it more enjoyable.

Driving style in my opinion needs to be adapted to suit these cars, again possibly lack of experience compared to the hard-core racers who have been doing it longer then I’ve been alive. Never the less it was a learning curve/experience.

The shitty K-Jetronic injection is rubbish in my opinion.

Compared to skylines and the likes the N/A’s do feel slow in a straight line but as a package, a well set up package I might add.. You’ll get a smile, as will the sound of an EFI ITB set up. We did the whole Weber phase for a while and it was more heartbreak then heart thumping.

A lot already have a well-sorted engine package and a tried and tested torsion bar set up, of if you’re lucky someone has footed the bill for a coilover conversion.

Up keep wasn’t too bad if your not comparing it to a family sedan. Parts are hideously expensive unless you seek out a bargain online. Porsche Brisbane wanted something like $5k for valve steam seals fitted where as an enthusiast mechanic who knew Porsche’s was half that.

I’m born and bread air cooled 911’s, but we’d get a GT3 next time as it’s a lot less hassle more reliable and cheaper to make quick HP wise. In saying that, some of those GT3 cup challenge cars built on the early 911 shells are ridiculously competitive.

Thanks for the tips Josh.

I wouldn't build one, I'd rather get a fully sorted one and have some fun in it. The reason I'm contemplating it is because I've spent the last 5 year building a car and it's getting frustrating. Plus you lose too much money, so if I'm gonna lose then I need to buy something where someone else has lost too.

A mate and his dad run a class winning 944 in the local PCV track days here, and I've seen some of the bills to maintain it to stock specification and it's scary! Their engine, without ancillaries, cost a touch more than my fully built engine (sleeved block, oversize valves, bored to 2.2 etc) without ancillaries and it's a bog stock 944 S2 engine. Ouch. I've also seen what the specialist shops charge to parts and it's a joke. They paid $400 more for identical RE55's than I did through a well known Porsche Tuning shop... talk about Porka tax! ;)

Those WRC cars are the bomb... bugger it, Troy can you be a pal and bring me back a 205 T16 Evo from the UK? Pay ya back later...

LOL, interesting that you post a car from RaceCarsDirect as there is a car on there which i will be looking at when i land, its been for sale a while and price has no budged so hope its still for sale when i arrive. Porn is all i will say, exy, but it is a geeza's dream car ;)

A bloke I know spent 27k to rebuild his 3.0 litre Porka (late 70's model), made a staggering 208hp at the wheels and is good for 1:26's at Sandown and 1:55's at PI.

Kinda makes the GTR a cheap car to race that goes much more quicker. I've told him the times we're doing and he didn't believe me. After showing him some incar footage he didn't know what to say.

I'd hate to see what it would cost to rebuild a late model Porsche motor.

Brand new GT3 bare engines are 35k... or you could have it rebuilt by a Porsche specialist for over 40k in most cases!

The GT-R is definately a better value for money racer. It will always be quicker, but I'm just a fan of the old school RS's (replicas). NA, lightweight, simple cars with a heap of character. But I'm a Porsche fan boy, and if I wasn't then I'd go a GT-R for outright pace.

A mate of mine has a white 73 RSR replica that he runs with the Porsche Club. It does 23's around Sandown, and 50's (I think, could be a touch less) at PI. It might not be as quick as a lot of the GT-R's, and it's worth a fair bit more than a lot of them, but I'd rather be belting around in that :P

    • Was going to say the car pulls up nicely everywhere, especially going into that last long right hander before the main straight. Looks like a lot of fun.
    • Hey Dave, welcome aboard! Good to see another soon-to-be Stagea owner here. The wagons are awesome — plenty of space, still got that Skyline DNA, and loads of potential if you’re into mods. Definitely post up pics when you get it, everyone here loves seeing new builds. What model/year are you looking at?
    • See if you can thermal epoxy a heatsink or two onto it?
    • The other problem was one of those "oh shit we are going to die moments". Basically the high spec Q50s have a full electric steering rack, and the povo ones had a regular hydraulic rack with an electric pump.  So couple of laps into session 5 as I came into turn 2 (big run off now, happily), the dash turned into a christmas tree and the steering became super heavy and I went well off. I assumed it was a tyre failure so limped to the pits, but everything was OK. But....the master warning light was still on so I checked the DTCs and saw – C13E6 “Heat Protection”. Yes, that bloody steering rack computer sitting where the oil cooler should be has its own sensors and error logic, and decided I was using the steering wheel too much. I really appreciated the helpful information in the manual (my bold) POSSIBLE CAUSE • Continuing the overloading steering (Sports driving in the circuit etc,) “DATA MONITOR” >> “C/M TEMPERATURE”. The rise of steering force motor internal temperature caused the protection function to operate. This is not a system malfunction. INSPECTION END So, basically the electric motor in the steering rack got to 150c, and it decided to shut down without warning for my safety. Didn't feel safe. Short term I'll see if I can duct some air to that motor (the engine bay is sealed pretty tight). Long term, depending on how often this happens, I'll look into swapping the povo spec electric/hydraulic rack in. While the rack should be fine the power supply to the pump will be a pain and might be best to deal with it when I add a PDM.
    • And finally, 2 problems I really need to sort.  Firstly as Matt said the auto trans is not happy as it gets hot - I couldn't log the temps but the gauge showed 90o. On the first day I took it out back in Feb, because the coolant was getting hot I never got to any auto trans issues; but on this day by late session 3 and then really clearly in 4 and 5 as it got hotter it just would not shift up. You can hear the issue really clearly at 12:55 and 16:20 on the vid. So the good news is, literally this week Ecutek finally released tuning for the jatco 7 speed. I'll have a chat to Racebox and see what they can do electrically to keep it cooler and to get the gears, if anything. That will likely take some R&D and can only really happen on track as it never gets even warm with road use. I've also picked up some eye wateringly expensive Redline D6 ATF to try, it had the highest viscosity I could find at 100o so we will see if that helps (just waiting for some oil pan gaskets so I can change it properly). If neither of those work I need to remove the coolant/trans interwarmer and the radiator cooler and go to an external cooler....somewhere.....(goodbye washer reservoir?), and if that fails give up on this mad idea and wait for Nissan to release the manual 400R
