Gt35r Vs Garrett T04z - Discussion (just Post In This Thread To Create A Database)

Holy cr*p can you? I actually struggle to believe that and I like to keep an open mind. I can help but figure you mean "high flowed stock turbos" as I have seen people do mid 11s on them but struggle to see it happen in a full weight GTR without spraying or something along those lines.

Oh yeah the cars I know of which have done 9s on GT35Rs are running 1.06 but are proper GT35Rs, not running 66mm compressor covers - and they are mostly Mitsis, but the point is they have to make good power and be able to pick up strong into each gear to do that.

No, a guy I know of. I can assure you stock turbos and the car was driven within an inch of its life... this was, maybe 5-6 years ago now

Could have been more than the usual 13psi though, not sure on that particular point

You see a lot of people get 12.0 or similar, they just like to keep their car in one piece so not milking the extra thats sitting there

Wow! that makes me feel happy in my pants.. I'm only chasing 300rwkw to start with and hoping to make that at well under 1bar.. I know your head flows better but it still makes me all giddy :(

LOL @ "only chasing 300rwkw"

....sh]t man that would have to be in excess of 500hp at the crank!

Yeah well only have standard rods at the moment and the setup should make 300rwkw easy :) got a 9psi spring for my gate so will get my tuner to start at 9psi and bump it up until it makes 300rwkw. The whole shebang should be good for ~400rwkw but I don't want to go there yet :(

Dont know, but i wouldnt want to try it without a restrictor,, I also never use those inline filters,,, if the motor runs a bearing I replace the oil feed line and restrictor as matter of course though... Cleaning the block's oil system when you build a motor is also critical

Really??

Since we fitted our inline filter, we have only ever saved turbos after engine blow ups.....

I wont be around till later in the year :( Jimmah should be there though? Pretty sure he's making a fair bit more than me with his 35r and in a drifter I'm thinking it'd be an interesting ride. I believe with traction it'd be a 130mph+ machine given sean reckons it has very similar top end to his rig.

I do value my life, im not sure that I am game enough to ride shotgun with that crazy man!!!

For about 5 seconds :D

What about your internals? ....ECU, pump, injectors and all that jazz too? Or have you done all that?

I think the RB26's block is rated at like 600hp or something but I'm not sure about the moving parts inside. I'm thinking that they'd be rated at a lot less or what?

...also, could someone please tell me what the maximum boost would be with a GT35r on a stock RB26? I'm yet to put in cams, injectors and pump and am wondering what the maximum boost would be prior to putting the other required upgrades in.

I'm thinking that with factory cams and fuel support system you wouldn't go over say 10 pounds with the larger flowing turbo???

Wiseco forgies, N1 oil pump, 550cc injectors, z32 afm, 044 fuel pump, remapped stock ecu, stock RB25DE cams, custom forward facing plenum & Q45 throttlebody (plenum/throttlebody go on with turbo).

Srsly, it should do it without breaking a sweat and the driveline is all done too (except for clutch.. current button clutch should be fine on the street but if I wanted to throw some slicks on and take it down the strip.. or drop 4th gear standstills.. I'll probably need to go multiplate!).

Hmmm the general consensus seams to be pro-T04z :P

For those of you who may not know - I'm deciding between a:

GT3076r (probably the best size but limited for the amount of money spent)

GT3582r (the next best size, but descibed as "boring" by more than one person. Loses too many RPM at gearshifts etc....etc)

....and the mighty T04z (possibly too big for my hp goal but described as fun and exciting lol)

For a maximum horsepower goal of around 450-500 at the treads. That maximum figure will be reached later on down the track as I don't have the biggest budget so for the time being it will probably be no more than 400 or so. For my power goal the GT35r seams to be ideal however everyone (including my tuner) describes it as "boring".

Decisions decisions :(

HELP!!!

ok, when i put my t04z on my car. (bog stock except ecu etc etc and a 3.5" exhaust) it made 315awkw on 1.4 bar.

i replaced that motor with one that had mild headwork and 260 poncams. it made 375 awkw on 1.6 bar.

annas car has little 252 poncams and only a mild exhaust port clean up. she made 345 rwkw on 1.5bar. (320rwkw on every dyno but the one it was tuned....)

so from what i can gather cams and headwork are paramount to making good power.. except for the odd car that makes retarded power compared to everyone else lol..

so if you are not planing to do headwork or atlest cams and still want good power id get the t04z. you wont be dissapointed. if you get a 35 you will get tired of it. just like anna did. (only took a few months :( )

so.

and another thing. why do people run a "oil restrictor" in the oil line for a gt35 (or any other garrett bb) when the restrictor is in the oil fitting in the turbo.......

After wiring in my ecu and getting the car running my tuner told me to piss of and install some cams before doing the final tune - he essentially said the 35r is very lazy in the mid-range and needs some drop in cams to wake it up. Basically I'd regret tuning it without the cams...

Anyone know how RB25DE cams differ from RB25DET? I remember seeing a list of stock cam specs on here a while ago but can't for the life of me find them :(

Upgraded cams is a 2.5k excercise I can't justify/afford yet :P

ps Tommi,

I'm at QR with my 35R on January 27th TimeAttack, so feel free to come out and I'll see if you can go for a passenger lap... ;)

bit of an update for you guys.

just put a t04z .84a/r split rear on annas 33. was a gt35 with .63a/r it is a good 500rpm laggier. (on hard at 4500. builds boost from 3k but ramps up hard from 4300. where as before it was very smooth. tune not changed and a quick mock up steam pipe manifold. (did have a 6 boost on the gt35)

has a 3.5" dump going sharply down to 3" at the cat entry and has not been tuned up yet. (waiting for new 6 boost and proper 3.5" zorst)

on 5 pound less its much more angry. she loves it. but once its tuned up it will be a tru back to back except for a 3.5" exhaust. so stay tuned :(

but from what i can say, it is significantly laggier on this particular engine thus far. but will have to wait and see. (refer above)

GcG turbos told me the TO4z would be around 800rpm lagier than my current GT35 set up, they said they have sold a fair number of them so i would guess they know what there on about.

Do you have a before dyno plot from when it had the GT35? Will you provide an after when it has? It will be perfect for answering everyones current (and a lot of peoples future) questions if you can do an overlay of a .63 GT35R with a T04Z. The .63s aren't really as good as the .82s for a RB imho, but it will definitely give a real idea. "Smooth" definitely usually indicates a better power delivery.... coming on hard late is brilliant for making a car feel twice as fast as it is

Would it be the smallish rear end A/R of the 35 that makes it feel smooth? It'd start spooling pretty early compared to a 35 with a .82 end....giving it a much smoother feel.

The .82 is pretty smooth too, on a 26 in my experience. Probably more to do with the fact the GT35 starts "windmilling" earlier than the T04Z and the build up onto boost is more progressive and generally earlier. If you have something that comes on and builds its boost later in the rev range it becomes much more noticeable as the later in the revs the torque ramps up, the more aggressively the power will ramp up and as such the more violent the power delivery. Most people notice (/ are more blown away by) change in acceleration moreso than outright acceleration, so cars with this ramp up in torque later in the revs generally feel much faster even if they aren't. Try cruising along at 4000-4500rpm in a car with a not laggy turbo and feed your foot down to full throttle at a firm steady pace (maybe over .5s?), vs stomping the foot down at the same revs. Some people will find the "feed down" method more dramatic despite the fact it would be left behind by the "stomp" method...

I think I can make sense of that. The T04z must come on with quite a thump indeed as my mates GT35 r33 gtst came on with quite a lurch as well.....nothing......nothing....nothing....and then, at the last second....BAM! and we have 17 inches I mean...pounds! :)

I guess I'll just have to see how Michael's GT35 R32 goes at QR.

I think it also depends on how many pounds you boost. I think, if you ran 20+ pounds on a GT35 and make 400+ horses.....well, I think that would hit you quite hard too or what? But yes, I'm thinking that 10-14 pounds on a GT35 would be quite progressive depending on how you're driving.

    • I did end up getting it sorted, as GTSBoy said, there was a corroded connection and wire that needed to be replaced. I ended up taking out the light assembly, giving everything a good clean and re-soldered the old joints, and it came out good.
    • Wow, thanks for your help guys 🙏. I really appreciate it. Thanks @Rezz, if i fail finding any new or used, full or partial set of original Stage carpets i will come back to you for sure 😉 Explenation is right there, i just missed it 🤦‍♂️. Thanks for pointing out. @soviet_merlin in the meantime, I received a reply from nengun, and i quote: "Thanks for your message and interest in Nengun. KG4900 is for the full set of floor mats, while KG4911 is only the Driver's Floor Mat. FR, RH means Front Right Hand Side. All the Full Set options are now discontinued. However, the Driver's Floor Mat options are still available according to the latest information available to us. We do not know what the differences would be, but if you only want the one mat, we can certainly see what we can find out for you". Interesting. It seems they still have some "new old stock" that Duncan mentioned 🤔. I wonder if they can provide any photos......And i also just realized that amayama have G4900 sets. I'm tempted too.
    • Any update on this one? did you manage to get it fixed?    i'm having the same issue with my r34 and i believe its to do with the smart entry (keyless) control module but cant be sure without forking out to get a replacement
    • So this being my first contribution to the SAU forums, I'd like to present and show how I had to solve probably one of the most annoying fixes on any car I've owned: replacing a speedometer (or "speedo") sensor on my newly acquired Series 1 Stagea 260RS Autech Version. I'm simply documenting how I went about to fix this issue, and as I understand it is relatively rare to happen to this generation of cars, it is a gigantic PITA so I hope this helps serve as reference to anyone else who may encounter this issue. NOTE: Although I say this is meant for the 260RS, because the gearbox/drivetrain is shared with the R33 GTR with the 5-speed manual, the application should be exactly the same. Background So after driving my new-to-me Stagea for about 1500km, one night while driving home the speedometer and odometer suddenly stopped working. No clunking noise, no indication something was broken, the speedometer would just stop reading anything and the odometer stopped going up. This is a huge worry for me, because my car is relatively low mileage (only 45k km when purchased) so although I plan to own the car for a long time, a mismatched odometer reading would be hugely detrimental to resale should the day come to sell the car. Thankfully this only occurred a mile or two from home so it wasn't extremely significant. Also, the OCD part of me would be extremely irked if the numbers that showed on my dash doesn't match the actual ageing of the car. Diagnosing I had been in communication with the well renown GTR shop in the USA, U.P.garage up near University Point in Washington state. After some back and forth they said it could be one of two things: 1) The speedometer sensor that goes into the transfer case is broken 2) The actual cluster has a component that went kaput. They said this is common in older Nissan gauge clusters and that would indicate a rebuild is necessary. As I tried to figure out if it was problem #1, I resolved problem #2 by sending my cluster over to Relentless Motorsports in Dallas, TX, whom is local to me and does cluster and ECU rebuilds. He is a one man operation who meticulously replaces every chip, resistor, capacitor, and electronic component on the PCB's on a wide variety of classic and modern cars. His specialty is Lexus and Toyota, but he came highly recommended by Erik of U.P.garage since he does the rebuilds for them on GTR clusters.  For those that don't know, on R32 and R33 GTR gearboxes, the speedometer sensor is mounted in the transfer case and is purely an analog mini "generator" (opposite of an alternator essentially). Based on the speed the sensor spins it generates an AC sine wave voltage up to 5V, and sends that via two wires up to the cluster which then interprets it via the speedometer dial. The signal does NOT go to the ECU first, the wiring goes to the cluster first then the ECU after (or so I'm told).  Problems/Roadblocks I first removed the part from the car on the underside of the transfer case (drain your transfer case fluid/ATF first, guess who found out that the hard way?), and noted the transfer case fluid was EXTREMELY black, most likely never changed on my car. When attempting to turn the gears it felt extremely gritty, as if something was binding the shaft from rotating properly. I got absolutely no voltage reading out of the sensor no matter how fast I turned the shaft. After having to reflow the solder on my AFM sensors based on another SAU guide here, I attempted to disassemble the silicone seal on the back of the sensor to see what happened inside the sensor; turns out, it basically disintegrated itself. Wonderful. Not only had the electrical components destroyed themselves, the magnetic portion on what I thought was on the shaft also chipped and was broken. Solution So solution: find a spare part right? Wrong. Nissan has long discontinued the proper sensor part number 32702-21U19, and it is no longer obtainable either through Nissan NSA or Nissan Japan. I was SOL without proper speed or mileage readings unless I figured out a way to replace this sensor. After tons of Googling and searching on SAU, I found that there IS however a sensor that looks almost exactly like the R33/260RS one: a sensor meant for the R33/R34 GTT and GTS-T with the 5 speed manual. The part number was 25010-21U00, and the body, plug, and shaft all looked exactly the same. The gear was different at the end, but knowing the sensor's gear is held on with a circlip, I figured I could just order the part and swap the gears. Cue me ordering a new part from JustJap down in Kirrawee, NSW, then waiting almost 3 weeks for shipping and customs clearing. The part finally arrives and what did I find? The freaking shaft lengths don't match. $&%* I discussed with Erik how to proceed, and figuring that I basically destroyed the sensor trying to get the shaft out of the damaged sensor from my car. we deemed it too dangerous to try and attempt to swap shafts to the correct length. I had to find a local CNC machinist to help me cut and notch down the shaft. After tons of frantic calling on a Friday afternoon, I managed to get hold of someone and he said he'd be able to do it over half a week. I sent him photos and had him take measurements to match not only the correct length and notch fitment, but also a groove to machine out to hold the retentive circlip. And the end result? *chef's kiss* Perfect. Since I didn't have pliers with me when I picked up the items, I tested the old gear and circlip on. Perfect fit. After that it was simply swapping out the plug bracket to the new sensor, mount it on the transfer case, refill with ATF/Nissan Matic Fluid D, then test out function. Thankfully with the rebuilt cluster and the new sensor, both the speedometer and odometer and now working properly!   And there you have it. About 5-6 weeks of headaches wrapped up in a 15 minute photo essay. As I was told it is rare for sensors of this generation to die so dramatically, but you never know what could go wrong with a 25+ year old car. I HOPE that no one else has to go through this problem like I did, so with my take on a solution I hope it helps others who may encounter this issue in the future. For the TL;DR: 1) Sensor breaks. 2) Find a replacement GTT/GTS-T sensor. 3) Find a CNC machinist to have you cut it down to proper specs. 4) Reinstall then pray to the JDM gods.   Hope this guide/story helps anyone else encountering this problem!
