welcome to the forum.

People have given some excellent advice to you so far regarding the stock BOV.

Don't mess with it. Leave it on. :)

I've been thinking about a BOV as a mod... ...but after reading this thread... ...Might just make a filter change instead... ...Cheeper and less fiddly...

The filter change does very little at all to total power. So with that in mind probably just change it when it's needed to something like a highflow panel filter drop in. Doing the pod filter really requires a cold air box or it's a complete waste of time.

As an example, the bunky GTR I have presently came with HKS pods.

These are well designed and have bellmouth inlets inside. However, I needed to make a cold air partition. I used a camping foam mat I had lying around.

Around town driving on a 28deg ambient day the inlet temp without a heat shield gets to 58deg C. With the shield on the same drive the inlet temp is 42deg C.

Under speed and load the intercooler is working more efficiently and rids itself of heat soak, however there is still a good 10deg C difference.

The difference in intake temp is 10deg C lower at the inlet temp sensor. This represents a significant power increase over the unshielded pods.

If I had a factory airbox this would be the case also, just if you start with one it's alot cheaper to get the result.

Greetings and welcome to SAU!

buy a boost controller and ramp it up to 13 psi, then it will be louder

thx guys

you guys are really helping

btw I have 2 things that came with the car

the 1st one is turbotimer. Apart from delaying that engine stop time, I dunno what else it does - -"

the 2nd one is a electronic box that display numbers that vary all the time like measuring some value. I dunno if this one is a boost controller or not (will post a pic of it later. Its too dark to get a clear pic of it now)

If it is a boost controller, do I just change the boost to 13psi and the bov will sound with stock air box ?

Can you explain a lil bit of these boost thingy ? what will 13psi on a boost controller mean ?

sry for being so troublesome

Does sound like a boost controller, any brand names or series names on it?

Increasing boost is usually different on each model of boost controller, see if there is an instruction manual for it that should help you understand how to do it.

And whats your car? If its stock gtst then any more than 10psi (psi is the measurement of boost in air pressure) will be detrimental to your car so keep it under 10 or at 10psi.

You MIGHT be able to hear it then if the boost is cranked up but you may still need to modify the intake, like someone said earlier just pull off most of the air box so its going straight into the panel filter then you will hear it.

My car is a stock 33 GTST

Here is a pic of it...I guess it is a boost controller ?

It said on itself HKS ELECTRONICS TECHNOLOGY / ELECTRONICS VAVLE CONTROLLER

However..no manaul came with the car and I dunno what all the modes are telling me..neither how to use nor understand them - -"

If i'm not getting aftermarket air filter...Can I modify the air box to make the bov sounds ? like someone said take off the air filter or something ? How to do this can anyone tell me roughly ?

Shit thats an old boost controller, not sure how that works. The high and low buttons mean a high and a low boost mode, see if changing the mode will increase/decrease power.

Just google hks electronic valve controller see what comes up.

Yer there are two parts to the standard air box, the actual air box and the cold air snorkel. If you remove the cold air snorkel so air is going straight into the box (you should see the panel filter from the entrance) then you should hear alot more air movement.

That boost controller is probably measuring/displaying in kg/cm2 and not psi. There are conversions on the net.

If you hit the high button with the ignition on, it will display your high boost setting for a few seconds before looking for your present high boost readout - which will be 00.00 if you don't have the motor going. You can do the same with the low boost button.

Not sure, but I think it is a HKS III evc. Definitely HKS, could be a II, not sure. You will be able to download a manual for it from the Usa HKS web site.

Pwr is power on/off, mode is the switch to go to different setting modes [time, boost level etc]. and Sbc is your scramble boost - basically a high boost hit. So if your normal High boost is set at 1.2 kg/cm2 and you want to up it for a short time [say 30 seconds] then you set Sbc up to your nominated high hit [say 1.6 kg/cm2] and it will boost to that extra level for 30 seconds while you pass another vehicle or something. You will rarely use it unless your racing, and unless you have a built engine, it is likely not a good idea, it would stress a std motor.

If your looking for sound out of your airbox, pop the lid off and tape the filter down. You can leave the snorkel in place. This will although subject it to extra heat from the engine bay, but it's no different to having an unshielded pod filter.

if you want ur bov to sound and dont want to get caught by police block the bov off with an alluminum gasket this way it will look as if you have the standard one on and will make a much better sound then any of pissy after market bovs and upgrade to a pod filter and if you want it to sound louder get a bigger intercooler relocate ur AFM or get a steel intake piping from the turbo and dont boost it over 10 when the car is practically stock. Trust me im running 10 psi with a frount mount and blocked bov and its realy loud and sounds mad and I have no stalling issues, just my opinion alot on here will disagree with the bov blocking but its been a long debate you either are for it or against it

    • Does it also misfire equally when revving?   Josh is very correct in what you should do. The coilpack harness wiring loom itself is a known problem due to its age and the number of heat cycles it has gone through. Throwing parts at a vehicle to diagnose the issue isn't a smart or good way to do it. Secondly, you may have a bad coil pack, you pop replacements in, they fix that issue, but messing with the harness breaks it, so the issue persists. So now you think "well it wasn't the coil packs" and have to continue chasing your tail, potentially swapping back in your shit coil packs and returning the good ones (yes, I've seen people do this because 'it wasn't the problem' and they want to save money). And suddenly, you've got two issues with the same symptoms...   Diagnose, don't use the spare parts shotgun.
