Guys

I have aquired a set of "quite useable" 87mm CP Pistons. One of the rings is ROOTED though and thought it best to buy a complete set. I was reading on the hi-octane website (under CP Piston rings):

"Manufacturer: CP or ACL. Depends on our current stock"

Does this mean ACL can also supply a replacement ring set for these? Or is there any other option other than the CP rings? The top ring is 1.0mm and the 2nd ring is 1.2mm

Any help would be appreciated!

for Total Seal rings (including their patented Gapless rings) try www.performancewholesale.com.au

be careful with which rings you buy, as different brands will have different axial widths (ie: the depth of the ring into the piston groove)

Make sure you check this too.

i'm using a set of acl rings (also known as mahle rings) in a set of CP pistons. The acl rings are actually listed for a mitsubishi 4cyl engine, so i had to get 2 sets, bout $150 from memory

both acl & cp top & second rings are nitrided but the oil control ring in the acl set carries more tention ( personal preference but i like slightly more tention)

ACL rings seal very well and come highly recommended for street engines

The ACL RB26 pistons take a 1.5 top and 1.8 2nd ring, while the CP have a 1.0 top and 1.2 (I think) 2nd.

i cant actually remember. if you can find an acl catalogue they are all in there

correct...nice thick rings provide a good seal.

I just measured - the CP's I have a 1.0mm top and 1.2mm 2nd ring (sames as a set of Wisecos I have...)

shame I cant jam a big fat ring in there :)

are they not new? The new CP's run thicker rings as i tried to use an older set of rings on NYTSKY's engine (i fu(ked one putting them in) and they were too thin. Had to buy a complete set of rings from Quantum just to get 1 second ring out of it...bugger!

could be older style perhaps. The pistons themselve dont appear to have done much work. But definitely thinner rings

Sorry to revive an old thread. However, I am trying to figure out if I have a newer set of CP pistons or not. I bought my CP pistons for my RB26 new back in September of 2007 and have been sitting in the box ever since. I measured the rings for craps and giggles and found that I have a 1.2mm top ring and a 1.5mm second ring. Do I indeed have the newer set of "thicker" rings/pistons?

And on top of that, should I upgrade to a set of ACL rings or others before I slap in those pistons? Thanks all........

they are the new design piston...the rings you have will be fine.

    • Not sure the US can import anything other than the C34 Stagea's, but if you can and you need to to tow, DO NOT under any circumstances get an M35 Stagea. If it is just as a family car and your country/state allows it, absolutely and definitely get an M35 (3.5L if possible as it is effectively a 350Z) over a C34.

    • Thanks for that, I'll check it all out. I can always do the brakes last anyway if its a problem.  The 16's are super cool, if they do fit I'll cruise around with them for a bit.  
    • Well, that's kinda the point. The calipers might interfere with the inside of the barrels 16" rims are only about 14" inside the barrels, which is ~350mm, and 334mm rotors only leave about 8mm outboard for the caliper before you get to 350, And.... that;s not gunna be enough. If the rims have a larger ID than that, you might sneak it in. I'd be putting a measuring stick inside the wheel and eyeballing the extra required for the caliper outboard of the rotor before committing to bolting it all on.
    • OK, so again it has been a bit of a break but it was around researching what had been done since I didn't have access to Neil's records and not everything is obvious without pulling stuff apart. Happily the guy who assembled the engine had kept reasonable records, so we now know the final spec is: Bottom end: Standard block and crank Ross 86.5mm forgies, 9:1 compression Spool forged rods Standard main bolts Oil pump Spool billet gears in standard housing Aeroflow extended and baffled sump Head Freshly rebuilt standard head with new 80lb valve springs Mild porting/port match Head oil feed restrictor VCT disabled Tighe 805C reground cams (255 duration, 8.93 lift)  Adjustable cam gears on inlet/exhaust Standard head bolts, gasket not confirmed but assumed MLS External 555cc Nismo injectors Z32 AFM Bosch 023 Intank fuel pump Garret 2871 (factory housings and manifold) Hypertune FFP plenum with standard throttle   Time to book in a trip to Unigroup
