Hey i am about to put twin turbos back on my car after a problem with the single turbo conversion and the pits not passing it, now i cant decide between the 2860r - 5's or the -7's. I have a single gt3076r on the car now and its just not got enough power, its only making mid 300hp range though, im hoping for around the 420hp range or so with reasonable boost levels and not too much lag. I dare say the 3076r is too responsive, though it is a 3L bottom end, but im thinking of going back to the complete rb26 engine setup.

Now could any perth guys with preferably stock cammed rb26 take me for a 2 min drive to see how the lag is on the 2 different setups. Im mainly interested in the feel of the -5's, i have already been in a car with the -7s (though it was with poncams and built motor). Even a spin in a -7 equipped car with stock cams would be ideal, as i dont want to upgrade cams in near future.

I live in the northern suburbs (Joondalup area) but am willing to meet anywhere really, give me a PM if someone can possibly help.

cheers

Rev210 - its the 0.8 housing

Paul the tune is only a quick one (safe for the 150 000km old bottom end) and im trying to get the car over the pits at moment, its not on the good motor either, just a stock internal rb30 bottom end and stock rb26 head, motors not the healthiest lol, needs new rings, but i tried to get through the engineer with the single turbo and he said i need a 5 gas analyser test to pass, dont think its gonna happen, but if i go back to twins then i dont need the test. I have only drivin the gt3076r setup twice (too and from engineers on permits, because car is unregoed). Its running 17psi and a cheap used cat just to pass, also plumbed in screamer too, it should be making 400hp atleast on this boost but i left it safe as im just focusing on passing the rego stuff at moment. I just feel like its on boost at cruising speed which wont help my fuel economy etc, it whistles and makes so much spooling noise under 2000rpm it is abit much for me. I am used to the t04z power/lag so i have a different perception to alot of other people of power/lag haha.

Have u swapped the Z for the 3076r? or are u talking about your old engine setup from years ago? i assume your running the 1.0 housing for that power?

so its now either the -5's or -7's, and the weight of the car makes under 400hp feel like a slug to be honest, i need atleast 400hp to be slightly happy :D Im even stuck whether to keep the 3L or go back to the 2.6L bottom end as well. decisions decisions :(

dont bother...just get guilt-toy to fly over and tune what you have...he can tune anything that will pass emissions.

Yeah, swapped the Z for the 76r, trying to get more response for the track. Running the .82 housing.

I disagree, I have SS's (9's) which are slightly bigger than 7's and smaller than 5's.

I am spewing I went with the SS's. 400 rwhp (true hp on X-speed's dyno) is about the max from these things and I have all the supporting mods (everything!!)

Go the 5's, the lag will not be noticeable you will be fully on by 4,500 and let's face it, are you ever really going to be squirting below that anyway? at least with 5's it leaves you with plenty to go later on if you so choose (which you know you will)

5's all the way, or alternatively, buy the 5's and ill swap you my 500 km old SS's (installed new by X-speed and only running 17psi) plus $500

Hey Guilt-Toy, the test i am not 100% sure on the exact details i sort of gave up the idea when the engineer mentioned it lol. He reckons the DPI said as of the 1st of Feb, i will require to do the IM240 (i think thats the name) test, but if i get in before then i only need the 5 gas one, i only got told yesterday arvo so i havent got time.

I might try and pass the pits without any mention of the turbo and see what happens, i can always throw the stock twins back on and pass and then put the gt30 back on, i just think its too slow at moment and was thinking recently to swap up to the gt3540 instead, but i havent even sorted this tune yet its all relying on the rego being sorted.

I am running an Autronic SMC ecu and stock gtr injectors, stock cams so it shouldnt be that extreme, i got a cat on it too, its not a compliance cat though.

This is the qoute from an engineer friend who contacted the DPI about the 5 gas test details....

"alternative to a full IM240 test is a 5gas analysis before and after test (5gas is HC, Co, CO2, 02 & NOx). You would need to find a standard car to test on the dyno at two or three load points then compare with measurements from your modified car. I can't see this being particularly economical, hire of a 5gas analyser, dyno and tuner to get your car to comply would be a headache, not to mention separate hire of a dyno and gas analyser to test the standard vehicle if you can find someone with a standard rb26. That said if you were able to pass these tests then you'd be in a very good position".

how hard would that be to tune and pass ?

stop convincing him to keep the single... he needs to buy something else so i can buy the 3076R off him.

lol i might just get engineer to sign everything off except the turbo and go to pits and see what happens. Even if the car doesnt pass ill throw the twins back on and get it through and then put gt30 back on after and when cops pull me over i show engineer permits for all the other stuff (lots of permits) and i doubt they will sticker it. I gotta try something after getting everything running nicely and finished. Gt35 will be on the cards im sure if single is passable :)

Thats a fair way short of their potential.

I bought a motor with a set of those that made over 400rwhp completely stock (and with a little wear) and at only 1 bar , on x-speed's dyno

go to the wreckers, and get one or 2 late model cat converters, im thinking 2006model or newer. if you run 2 of them then you should pass that easy test. even if you have one only try get a 2007 or 2008 model cat if you only have one, also run the car on e10 if you can.

what year model is this car? to tune for emissions you need a dyno and a 5gas which will need to be done for a IM240 test.

What am i missing here, that turbo is rated to 525hp. How is it possible for you to get that power? I have the seame turbo on my rb25 and i am getting 390rwhp

Or is there just that much extra power in the rb26 head with 3l bottom end?

    • This looks great! Awesome to have the 5 speed with an LSD in this. The Recaro's look like SR2's or SR3's. It's a shame they've been retrimmed as they would have looked sweet in their original colours. I think I'd want my agent to be a little more up front and informative too. I've never imported but I reckon it would make me a little nervous, so the more info the better.
    • Thanks for doing that Duncan! Makes you a good person in my books. We don't get kangaroos or wombats here. But we have bats and it's similar. AFAIK it's often the mums with a baby attached that get hit because they drop lower when starting from a tree. If you hit an animal, check on it. https://www.ifaw.org/au/resources/wildlife-rescue-app An app to get the closest wildlife rescue contact.
    • My dream is also to have a proper hoist, but I don't think it will ever happen. My quickjack is probably as close as I'll ever get, it really is very good though.
    • Yeah we keep on in the dailies, it is pretty poor how many animals get hit and the driver leaves without checking....have saved a couple of little ones over the years. Bit of a gruesome job though, pouches generally need to be cut open because they are so tight and often the joey doesn't realise mum is gone so they are still locked onto the teat. I checked the modules in front of the DS wheel where an oil cooler should go.... There is the radar unit - that can go for race use) One of the 2 HX water pumps, the silver cylinder. That needs to be kept but might be able to be relocated But the bad news, the big computer mounted vertically in front of the wheel (blocking any potential air exit) is the electric steering computer. That is required until/unless i do a hydraulic steering conversion, and in CAD based modern car design it is not like I can just pop a big unit like that somewhere else (plus the loom would be too short anywhere else too). So, the passenger side is OK to clear out (just use a smaller washer reservoir, potentially elsewhere), but the DS no beuno
    • Well, all the best with the new camry It was interesting to hear about the UK process, it is generally a lot more streamlined here with a shipping agent looking after all the import side (noting the exact final price can still be a surprise.....) and I've used a few different brokers on the japan (or US) side, and never had any trouble with any of them....luck of the draw I guess. You mentioned you didn't get the auction sheet (understandable since you bought it from a dealer, not auction), but I always try and get hold of that because they are pretty thorough. I've imported 2x R grade vehicles over the years and both were fine, repairs in Japan are pretty thorough compared to here in Oz.
