Laid Off (global Financial Crisis)

Well,

As I work in sales (recruitment) my work relies soley on me making sales. As I'm sure you are all well aware the global financial crisis is hitting a lot of businesses. So today I came in to a meeting only to realise that in fact it was a meeting to tell me I am being laid off. FARK!!!

The thing that pissed me off the most is they are trying to get me to resign as of Friday and they will writte me references and find me a new job. I nearly did when I realised that I wouldn't get any pay in lieu if I did this. Sneaky bastards. So Before a letter came my way I forwarded my letter of resgination with 4 weeks notice. As per my contract. Lets just see what they do now.

I guess there is no real reason to this post except to say I am pissed off royaly on how much time and effort you can put in to be chewed up and spat out. I guess buisiness is a harsh world sometimes. 1 am the 4th in 3 weeks but the other resigned. I'm calling their bluff.

Anyone else suffer this fate as well?

I always tell everyone there's NO friends in business, no matter how much you think your friends with your bosses or whoever...

My dad was made redundant 2 weeks before Christmas a few years back...Just randomly called into the bosses office on a Thursday afternoon, given the news and escorted out (Massive company, and he was very high up, held all passwords etc so obviously they don't want him around after he's been told he's gone)

He was told that his position no longer existed, but that there was a new position being created, and as he was clearly the most qualified, he should apply for it...wink wink etc..

The boss then gave the position to a mate of his, who had no idea what he was doing, and resigned 2 months later. :P

Pointless story, but still...NO FRIENDS IN BUSINESS. EVER.

Sales is and always has been a high turnover of staff. Were you hitting your targets?

Im in sales myself, and have seen PLENTY of "sales reps" come and go. The important thing to remember is there's a difference between the levels of sales reps out there. For example if you have a background from residential direct (and were good at it) you can walk onto a job in 90% of businesses, compare that to say where i worked last we had 2 people brought on to do my paperwork cause i was doing very well there and the time spent doing paperwork was basically down time for me, so 2 juniors were put on. They had aspirations of learing how to sell and joining the sales team. Well, they never had a chance! They were hired and advised of the possibility and to work hard etc. As soon as i left there they were gone. Since i left (my choice, not theirs) they've sacked2 of the other "sales reps" who were basically never hitting target. Its harsh out there for a person who tries sales and doesnt perform. Glad to hear you're not letting them shaft you :P

As long as you've got great references and a VERY strong sales orientation do what i did at my last place - walk in and take a very low retainer but negotiate for a high commission plan, never go for profit share, but always secure something along the lines of "overrack" ( eg, you sell a product for 1500 but the normal price is 1400, you should get some of the difference otherwise whats the point?). Then go nuts! as an example i had a 15k target of total sales (any of the companies products) to do in my first month, finished at 19k, second month moved to 20k target finished with 27k, third month moved to 25k finished with 29k, fourth month moved to 30k, finished at a touch under 40k. Then negotiate salary or even move into a different area, i took the second option and moved to development. Food for thought :banana:

Anyone else suffer this fate as well?

I haven't heard of a section of contract law that allows a quick termination without 4 weeks notice OR some kind of appropriate payout

Nice work with the letter of resignation, I've lost a team member without knowing it (I found out from Facebook that he was given 4 weeks notice or the option of unpaid leave!)

And there's rumors that the company may be cutting a lot more jobs...

How long had you been there? If it was any length of time, you could have void any redundancy pay by handing your notice in. Normally I though they must pay your notice out at least as long as it isnt a sacking. E.g escort you off site with your notice and 4 weeks pay or allow you to work your 4 weeks. However, someone I know was let go with 2 weeks notice which is harsh especially with a big financial commitments.

That is 100% true dezz - business doesnt give a crap about who is friends with who. My work laid off about 150 people over hte last year. Pretty scary - specially cos a few of us just started in the last 12 months. My plan is to keep a back up plan going......hence why im doing a PT course, and trying to get another extra income source.

Bad luck RBJ3T - im sure you will find a job soon. There are still heaps out there, just have to keep trying.

Thats what I understand as well. Anyway if they gave you notice, verbally or otherwise they need to pay a redundancy pay (unless you've been working with them for a short period)

my Mrs got laid off 5 days before christmas... she was TV producer at an Ad agency who have Holden as one of their major clients... she hadn't been there for 12 months yet so was cheap to get rid of

however she already has 3 offers, so the economy can't be that bad... yet...

We were all told last week that all office staffing positions were under review but all production jobs were fine. I work in quality which is both in the office and the production, so I don't know where my job lies. I'm hoping for a redundancy payout though, I'm ready for something different.

got a felling im gonna get the sack...no work at my company atm....normally we book up 4 weeks in advance and yesterday we caught upto jan27 orders...guess people aint buying soft furnishing anymore.

sorry to hear mate, but yeh i work in retial ! and mate its pretty harsh, depending on how much sales you do , the more hours u get.. the cos of this currency stuff up, the casuals r gettin less hours!

      Just trying to get my head around this. At 5psi of boost, you turn on your wmi pump, and then you're using a 3000cc injector, to allow flow upto the actual engine, where you have your 6x200cc injectors and a 500cc injector. If the above is correct, what advantage are you obtaining by having the 3000cc injector blocking flow, is this just incase a line breaks between that injector and the motor you can stop flow immediately? Or are the 6x200cc and 500cc less injectors and just spray nozzle?

      Welcome! New member myself, but I had an R33 back in 2002. Best advice I could give, based on my experience: if you're running the factory turbo, be very conservative with boost. I made the mistake of just fiddling around with the boost controller and cranking the boost for fun, and the end result was my intake pipes popping off frequently from the constant deluge of oil that was being blown into the recirc by the stressed-out turbo, which itself was siphoning oil from the engine and farting it out both sides of its centre bearing (or something to that effect). If I could do it all again, I would have gotten a new turbo and had a tune dialled in professionally and then just left it alone! Funny you mention the metal shavings in the gearbox, as I had the same thing - the probe plug (magnetic drain plug, essentially) would come out caked with shavings. At least it was doing its job. Not sure if that's just sacrificial wear and part of the deal, or if my gearbox was shagged, but I wasn't abusing it. Enjoy the R33 - they're a dying breed, and if they weren't $35k+ on CarSales in Queensland, I might have picked up one of those again, instead of the 370GT I own now (though I'm loving the 370GT, that big 3.7L V6 just hits different).

      Howdy folks. I owned an R33 back in 2002, which was thoroughly beyond my capacity (financially speaking) to maintain/insure, so we parted ways in 2004. Fast forward 21 years (to literally yesterday, in fact) and I'm now the proud owner of a 2007 V36 370GT. I'm happily surprised by how much power the VQ37VHR makes, compared to the RB25DET, considering the latter is turbocharged. I had planned to add a turbo at some point but I'm on the fence about whether I'll even need it (though I do love the sudden onset of extra torque). Any other 370GT owners around the traps, I'd love to hear about your experiences with this car (good and bad).
