R32 Gtr Issues (rebuilds, Repairs, Restorations, Etc.)

G'Day guys,

Here is a little bit about my situation, I have spun a bearing in my 32 GTR right after I have replaced the turbos. I am still deciding on whether to go a full rebuild on the car (forged internals, etc) or to repair the broken bearing and general patch up and get rid of it?

I put this together to basically ask people what sort of issues they have had with their GTR's eg, brakes, gearbox, suspension, bushes, etc. So it can give me some sort of idea of what else to expect to go wrong with the car and also give a heads up to others about what they might be up for when something breaks.

Hopefully this thread can be used as a reference later on!

Cheers,

Also guys, can you add in the Year & Model of your GTR?

eg. R32 GTR

I have done since i have had the car:

  • Clutch (upgraded to cushion button from ACS) cost $1,800
  • Rear Subframe Bushes leaked (changed to whiteline kit) cost $200
  • All 4 Disc rotors cracked (replaced with slotted RDA's) cost $800
  • Clutch Fan cracked (replaced with genuine nissan part) cost $200
  • stock GTR injectors leaking (replaced with R34 GTR ones) Cost $400
  • turbo exhaust wheel broke off (upgraded to 2860R-5's) Cost $2300 + $900 labour

List to be Repaired

  • x2 O2 sensors ($270 each + $150 labour) genuine part
  • weak fuel pump ($340 incl. install) aftermarket 500hp pump
  • HICAS failing ($225 lockbar + $140 labour) HICAS lockbar
  • FINALLY spun a bearing (engine rebuild with forged pistons, rods, bearings, baffles, oil & water pumps, recond head) quoted roughly $9,000

Thats my list, Definitely not cheap owning a SKYLINE!!

32 GTR's are getting old, so it's normal for things to break and wear out.

Bushes are a common item that will be worn, the gearbox, if it's had a hard life, will begin to show signs of worn synchro's, suspension is usually replaced with coilovers but they can begin to leak if they're old, window seals will start to deteriorate...

Great cars, though. Once you get the RB26 rebuilt and tuned with the new turbo's, you'll fall in love all over again.

Any car will cost you money in the long run, anyway. Even buying a R34 GTR, things will break... maybe just not as quickly.

Edit: $9k for a rebuild? That's pretty expensive... you must be using big-brand name everything and need a new crank, etc?

  • 3 months later...

Hay dude bady luck with the bearing.

i had the same problem bout 2 days after importing the car....:)

but saying that..... 9 g is f*king expensive for a build,

mine cost 6.5g. but i did some of it myself.... if u can get the engine out.. and in at home thats bout 2 g.... ive got spool rods r34gtr crank nitrided, with cp pistons, 6 L greedy sump, hks step 2 valve springs, 272 cams, and an n1 pump, the head work was the most expensive with some mild porting and engine assembly comming in at 2g, parts were bout between 4 and 4.5 g

like i said if ur pretty handy and know how to use a drill and tap you can put in extra lines form the head to the sump,

ps if ur gonna do it, use good quality stuff,,,, it may cost more but its better than doing it all again.

gl any way.....

if ur in bris let me know....

ill give u the number of my engine builder....

Having owned 3 GTRS (each one requiring a rebuild) I can tell you, 9k is a fair figure for a good rebuild.

Can be done as cheap as 4-5k for a cheapish build, but for it to be done properly, it is worth spending the extra 3k and not having to stress because you cheaped out.

Issues i've had with GTRs:

-Engine failure.

-Dead turbos (ceramic wheels migrate south

-Clutch failure.

-Worn suspension.

- Stuffed AFM.

General maintenance is high, but once you get things sorted, they aren't too bad. Once you get things sorted. I've been lucky with gearboxes for some reason.

Hey how did you find out you spun a bearing?

Nosie, excess oil usage, a big bang?

Yeah, I would like to know when you have spun bearing? I had 89 GTR I haven't lost any oil at all. Touch wood of course. lol But for me its not the OEM engine the guy I brought it from replace it. coz it had a 800hp built engine by Apexi Japan. He said engine he put in it done bout 80k and the compression was all normall. Its make 343.1rwhp on stock turbos with retune ECU. And for a full rebuild in Perth your looking at bout 15-20k.

if u spin a bearing it will usually lose power stright up, it will have a ticking noise, and starve oil from the rest of the engine, eg ur oil pressure wont go up.
