Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone can help or explain why i have bad radio reception in my r34 and if it is a common thing.

Atm i have a jap radio system with one of those aeropro frequency expander. The radio seems to be alright when the car is sation, but when your driving the reception is very poor.

Any ideas as to why??? :P

If you don't have an external "whip" type antenna, then the existing antenna may be integrated into the rear window, and appear to the eye as part of the rear demister. (usually at the top) This type of antenna does not receive as well as the traditional vertical whip.

Sorry to side-track the thread, but I have an R33 with really bad radio reception. I have an adapter I bought from Autobarn, and my radio reception works but is extremely weak (I can't always receive Nova/Fox in most areas).

I have a Pioneer headunit and I have disconnected the rear aerial unit because of this, I'm starting to think that maybe I should plug the aerial power back into it and disconnect the head unit to aerial wire.

Would the aerial power cause issues like this? Really bad reception?

I read a tip off here that you can disconnect it to stop it going up all the time due to the issues with Pioneer head units (always up even when using USB or CD)

Pioneers dont always do that, some use amp turn on wires, some use antenna power wires, both blue on the radio?

or you can put in a relay to put the antenna up with a switch ?

all diversity antenna setups, have reception issues, mutipath, and signal drops, add hills and big buildings and its worse. and a lot of people hack the cables up instead of using the adapters. making it much worse

a simple antenna seems to work the best or amplified one like VW or BMW uses?

I listen to 90% USB anyway, I have to make a switch for the ATTESA controller, might wire up one for the antenna at the same time.

There is an antenna power wire, the amp turn on wire is separate, I have used an adaptor for the aerial...

  • 2 weeks later...

Re-plugged in the antenna in the rear, I somehow accidentally removed my antenna trigger wire at some point, probably during the amp wiring....

Anyway, I've got half decent reception with the aerial down, it will stay that way :P

Just don't disconnect your aerial in the boot because it makes reception really bad...

I have a pioneer head unit as well and i get better reception after i cut the trigger wire for the elec antenna and leave the antenna down.

    • It is a kunfine Android screen . Does anyone know the wirering diagram of the fuga ??
    • just an update to this, poor man pays twice  Tried sanding down the pulleys but it didnt do the trick. Chucked another second hand alternator in the na car which I got for free off my mate and its fixed the squelling. Must have been unlucky with the bearings.    As for my turbo car, I managed to pick up a cwc rb alternator conversion bracket + LS alternator for 250 off marketplace, looked to be in really good nick. Installed it , started the car and its not charging the battery.... ( Im not good with auto elec stuff so im not sure if this was all I needed to do but I verified such by using a multimeter on the battery when the engine was running and I was only getting 12.2v )   I had to modify the earth strap for the new LS alternator , factory earth strap was a 10mm bolt which did not fit the bolt on the LS alternator which was double the size so I cut it off , went to repco bought some ring terminals that fit, crimped it onto the old earth strap and bolted it up to the alternator , started the car and same issue. Ran like shit and was reading 12.2 at the battery.  For a "plug and play" advertised kit thats not very plug and play but alas.  My question is , am I missing something ? Ive been reading that some people recommend upgrading the stock 80 amp alternator fuse to a 140 amp but I dont see how that would stop the alternator charging especially at idle not under load.  Regardless ive pulled it out and am going to get it bench tested by an auto elec tomorrow but it would be handy to know if ive missed something silly or have done something wrong.
    • My wild guess is that you have popped off an intake pipe....check all of the hoses between the turbo and the throttle for splits or loose clamps.
    • Awesome, thanks for sharing!
    • To provide more specific help, more information is needed. What Android screen? What is its wiring diagram? Does the car's wiring have power at any required BAT and ACC wires, and is the loom's earth good?
