what they can just send u a random epa notice in the mail?

yes they can its happened to me twice now, once for my supra na and now the 34, the supra however was f**king loud lol. na with extractors and a straight 3 inch pipi no cat and 4 inch muffler

Im a bit worried now, my 3.5" exhaust is probably way too loud too. Does that mean somebody in my street can ring the EPA and dop it in?? Is it that easy?? or does law inforcement have to hear it then send a letter in the mail?? Man we have a nation of winge bags don't we!

If you have a stock exhaust, there is NO way its 98dB

Did you go to an approved tester, with a calibrated machine?

my exhaust is stock buddy trust me my best mate has his own workshop and when we did the cooler it was on the hoist and i checked out the exhaust taking measurement for when i do my custom exhaust (was supposed to be tomorrow night but i have to move it till i get this shit cleared) and it is definately stock, it has the cat in place from compliance and the little twin pipe thing into the muffler where u can change to sport mode and quiet mode or something.

i took it to daalder exhaust in preston they were on the list from the epa and my friend went there himself to get his cleared a little while ago.

yeah u have to be seen by the jacks. funny thing was i got seen on collins street city at 1.30 pm so lunch time on a street that is bumper to bumper traffic all day plus they are doing renovations at australia on collins and there is the guy there everyday with the yellow "slow" sign all day long so i couldnt go past about 15 kms i drive there twice a week and its like that every day

I reckon they fked it mate.

There is no way on EARTH a stock GT-T exhaust is 98dB.

My 3" exhaust, single muffler, was 98-100dB

And my current 3.5" exhaust, cat, mufflers is right on the limit. Ive had more EPA's than i'll ever need, so have many friends, and 98dB is no cat/small single muffler... 3-3.5" exhaust... not a stock item pulling that much.

So either the meter is faulty, or they conducted the test wrong. 98dB is so far outta the ballpark for a stock exhaust its not funny.

GTR's have a hard time passing with aftermarket dumps & stock exhaust... but a GT-t - no chance. Even some of the Jap aftermarket exhausts (3") are 90-93dB

What's this business about quiet/sport mode??? There is more to the story if you say its stock... you sure the mufflers still have their insides?

For the record, ive never been a fan of Daalder in Preston or Box Hill... Take it to the tester in Lilydale... its a drive, but at least he tests it in the open, no buildings/cars/traffic around and so on that can 'trip' the meter

I would suggest you jump on the net and have a read of the ADRs for noise.

The test procedure is very specific on where the reading should be taken, ground conditions, buildings, rev range, ...

I suspect the guys you have gone to have botched one or more parameters.

he did test it in the open, it was outside in the carpark area at 9.30 am very little traffic, and he did it like 3 or 4 times.

in reference to ur quiet/sport mode question my 34 has a swith under the dash from factory to make the exhast go louder or quieter by directing the exhaust gas into either side of the muffler (one is fatter and one is skinner)

lilydale is a big drive for me but it might be worth it i guess because my car is not really loud at all

well he did it outside with a little microphone thing and he had this v shaped ruler type thing which he touched to the end of my muffler and put the microphone at a bit of an angle to the muffler when he did it.

at 5000rpm it did 98db and at 4000 rpm it did 91 db

mine has done 92db at 5000rpm

with no cat 3" turbo back exhaust and a bigger turbo

did you have any doof doof pumping at the same time ??

no i still have the standard stereo i spend all my money on handling lol. hardly even listen to the stereo.

There is something wrong here still

I don't know what it is, but there is no way you have 98dB factory exhaust.

Its as simple as that.

bro, i can only tell u what the guy told me, i also stood over his shoulder just incase he was trying be a dicey f**ker but he angled the meter thingy to show and said watch the little red light thing as it goes up and the numbers are on the side. by 4000rpm it was over.

im putting a smaller muffler on ther going to get it tested again thursday morning (hopefully it will pass) and then ill be making my new 3inch exhaust over the weekend.

its all a little bit confusing to me lol

Edited by GUN_METAL_GTR32

what was rev limit is your car supposed to be tested at?? 5000rpm?? i know my 32R was tested at 5000rpm, which initially i thought was high, so rang EPA up and they confirmed, i think its linked by where tacho limiter is (8000rpm) and some fraction of that, but i would have thought GTT would be at a lower rev

RB26 - 5100rpm

RB25 - 4900rpm

RB20 - 4700 or 4500rpm (i think, don't quote me on that one)

    • Don't even try to run it on the stock ECU if you're going to have the boost controller bring boost above ~10 psi. I've already told you that. If you use the Nistune ECU, you will need to CAREFULLY read the available documentation for Neo tuning, and read some threads on the Nistune forums, to discover the various things you have to do to prevent the ECU from going bananas when the boost is too high. The is a table associated with th boost sensor that must be modified to prevent it from shitting the bed. This is just one of the things that you will need to do to the tune in Nistune, because the Neo turbo ECU will be expecting to see a number of things (such as the TCS) that are not there, and you have to block the DTCs on those. It is totally not surprising to me that you are having the problems that you are, but the solutions to these problems have been known for >15 years. So just get it done.
    • Hi. Sry iam not a mechanic and iam not at the car atm so i dont know 100% but they told they measure those and even try to change those. AFM they have two. Coils are new a they have my old one too. Plugs too. ECU...we have 25 NEO stock and Nistune 25 NEO.   But i dont know if any one those could be the problem and why/if/what can cause this, Only thing they did not check is fuel...but that walbro 255 is new(like 1,5 years)... That fuel pressure gauge idk...but i let them know Any suggestions?   EDIT: how can they know if it is like you say he ECU pull power when it reaches a specific boost level that is too high? Tha car has boost controler
    • Can you clarify what you mean by boost cut, do you mean it misfires both when under load (driving) and when stationary and out of gear? Or does the ECU pull power when it reaches a specific boost level that is too high (boost control issue)? Does it occur at idle with no throttle? When you say "the ECU is OK", what ECU is it and why do you think it is OK? Have you used the NEO ECU, and if so do you have a MAP sensor attached? Same for the AFM, why do you think it is OK? Do you have any way to put a fuel pressure gauge on it (even just a mechanical one between the fuel filter and fuel rail)?
