iphone

the appstore makes it head and shoulders above the rest.

they just added skype as an app. So now you can call international from a wifi point for pennies,

the browser I think is unmatched by any other phone browser.. the games, at least, the time-wasting

ones, are as good as the DS. You can't argue with in-built itunes and ipod, amazon has the kindle reader for it,

the bloomberg app is amazing for financial news.

get an optus contract and it is basically free.. if you can put up with optus not being so good in the country..

version 3 firmware addresses the last couple of key complaints (copy paste)..

honestly I think only a perverse anti-apple attitude can rule it out.

yeah the interface wows but it also continues to be useful after the wow factor wears off..

and the way all the apps use the same paradigm isn't bullshit, it makes them all really easy

to pickup and figure out, from the first moment. But I see plenty of games that are just games..

no apple interface elements in sight. So it isn't a rule or anything, I think apps use

the touch interface gadgets because it is the best way to deal with lots of info.

my kid has been using kiddie apps on it since he was 2. He can unlock the phone, select

the app he wants, use it, quit it, and go start another one.. all without me helping.

Yeah that's great, but I still have my 28yr old and a 30yr old who come to me asking me to load itunes on my pc (after I delete it everytime) so I can put music on it and update etc. because they wouldn't have a clue on how to do anything more than your son does. Just like most users it's intended for.

Still looking into the blackberry storm..............haven't made a decision on that or a HTC yet.

well that's your/their trouble, trying to mix itunes and windows..

if someone can effectively use a windows mobile based device, or a blackberry based device, they

can use more of what an iphone offers, and if they have a mac then itunes is well integrated, and

so is the iphone.

your 28yo or 30yo perhaps shouldn't have any smartphone, just like my parents. Give them a nokia

with big buttons and an easy to read display, and be satisfied if they learn to read and respond to an SMS

after a year of explanations.

Sure, I understand that the choices those people (and in turn me, by helping them) make in OS and effective use of the product can alter the experience dramatically, but this phone is marketed at those exact people. The ones who don't make the best decisions.

It's simple and easy to use touch screen novelty, along with ripe marketing tell you that your parents are the people it's intended for. Until of course all other markets are flooded.

omnia is crap. i've used one for a few days. hated it. iphone is much better. very easy to use and fast browsing. easy to use and fast email. good sms. good phone.

HTC touch HD is tha shit. HTC touch diamond is old. there are better phones from HTC now. even the HTC touch pro i think is better as it has a nice keyboard.

blackberry are rubbish. 90% of people who have one only have it cause that's what their office uses and gives them for free. sort of like a dog collar...

ihpone is a great phone. don't discount it just cause you hate apple (i hate them too, have never owned an ipod, or any apple pc except at work). i think ihpone 3g is the wiener.

I thought i would ask my like minded buddies on SAU what your favourite phones

are on the market at the moment, from experience or otherwise. Hopefully you might

be able to help me choose a new one. :)

You know you will get a million and one different answers. The main question is what are you looking for in a phone and what network you are currently with?

The reason I ask for network (other than pricing wise) some networks have exculsive deals on handets (for example - Optus is the exlusive dealer for the HTC Dream while telstra for now has the excusive rights to Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 and HTC's Touch Diamond and Touch HD)

For me i'm waiting for the Xperia to come to Optus (hopefully next week) it's a nice phone and the community has go alot of mods for this phone. Currently I have an old Sony Ericsson W850i and hasn't failed me yet but it's time for an upgrade.

The iPhone and very stylish phone but it lacks some features that are common on most phones (some of which is going to be resolved when the 3.0 software updates comes out - cut-copy-paste i'm looking at you)

As I said at the end of the day, what do you want on a mobile phone and what is it going to be used for (for example if your a tradie than an iPhone is not recommended)

Tell me more about "tha shit"

and much like BDJ say's it's a shame its only on telstra because thier plans/caps are not competitive.

look at this link GSMArena - HTC Touch HD Specs

yeah tell me about it - I want the Xperia but not willing to go on a $150 phone plan for it. and I think the Touch HD is only on ther MRO plans (handset repayment of $41.62 per month) which sucks the balls

You can buy the HTC's from www.expansys.com.au ... AND they are about $100-$150 cheaper than what Telstra want outright for the exact same thing.

So its not exclusive at all, only exclusive in that they offer them as a bundle with a plan

Nismoid - that's very true if you got the money to buy it outright then yeah I would but a Touch HD or Xperia X1i (the Telstra one is the X1a) but I don't have the money to buy outright...

I don't know how mobile companies can get away with exculsive mobile phone deals

O RLY?

I'm just goin off what i heard

oooh good thread

my gf is currently looking for a phone that she can run trading software on. only for closing out trades etc. not for full on trading via the phone.

now she is tossing up between the iphone, and the blackberry bold.

gimme your opinions :) and keep in mind what she needs it for. it needs to be reliable/stable, and fairly quick.

also, i heard something about email account set up on the blackberry requires something something lol. ie. not just punching in your email settings.

blackberry-bold-iphone-comparison.jpg

sony experia X1 is pretty good too. i've used one for a day and liked it.

HTC touch HD is money. like I said forget diamond unless you just want a cheap-ish one. they are superseded now.

apple 3g is so easy to use and means you actually get the most out of web browsing, you tube, email etc. it's a gret phone. and there is an ap for everything. i was installing a washing machine the other day in my place and wanted to make sure it was level, downloaded the spirit level ap and away I went! phone turns into a spirit level. nice.

omnia really is a rubbish phone. the touch interface is crap. typical samsung junk. I had high hopes for it but after two days was ready to introduce it to kindly doctor foot to put it out of it's misery.

yeah i use the Apple iphone, get a lot of use out of it for all different types of apps, im curious though to have a play with a Blackberry, like someone commented though i have seen many people using Blackberry because their company pays for it,like the old 02 pda phones that many companies would supply their I.T staff with in the past.

It really depends greatly on your use at a user end of things.

    • Update 3: Hi all It's been a while. Quite a lot of things happened in the meantime, among other things the car is (almost) back together and ready to be started again. Things that I fixed or changed: Full turbo removal, fitting back the OEM turbo oil hardlines. Had to do quite a bit of research and parts shopping to get every last piece that I need and make it work with the GT2860 turbos, but it does work and is not hard to do. Proves that the previous owner(s) just did not want to. While I was there I set the preload for the wastegates to 0,9bar to hopefully make it easier for the tuner to hit the 370hp I need for the legal inspections that will follow later on. Boost can always go up if necessary. Fitted a AN10 line from the catch can to the intake hose to make the catchcan and hopefully the cam covers a slight vacuum to have less restrictive oil returns from the head and not have mud build up as harshly in the lines and catch can. Removed the entire front interior just shy of the dashboard itself to clean up some of the absolutely horrendous wiring, (hopefully) fix the bumpy tacho and put in LED bulbs while I was there. Also put in bulbs where there was none before, like the airbag one. I also used that chance to remove the LED rpm gauge on the steering column, which was also wired in absolute horror show fashion. Moved the 4in1 Prosport gauge from sitting in front of the OEM oil pressure gauge to the center console vents, I used a 3D printed vent piece to hold that gauge there. The HKB steering wheel boss was likely on incorrectly as I sometimes noticed the indicator reset being uneven for left vs. right. In the meantime also installed an airbag delete resistor, as one should. Installed Cube Speed premium short shifter. Feels pretty nice, hope it'll work great too when I actually get to drive. Also put on a fancy Dragon Ball shift knob, cause why not. My buddy was kind enough to weld the rust hole in the back, it was basically rusted through in the lowermost corner of the passenger side trunk area where the wheel arch, trunk panel and rear quarter all meet. Obviously there is still a lot of crustiness in various areas but as long as it's not rusted out I'll just treat and isolate the corrosion and pretend it's not there. Also had to put down a new ground wire for the rear subframe as the original one was BARELY there. Probably a bit controversial depending on who you ask about this... but I ended up just covering the crack in the side of the engine block, the one above the oil feed, with JB Weld. I used a generous amount and roughed up the whole area with a Dremel before, so I hope this will hold the coolant where it should be for the foreseeable future. Did a cam cover gasket job as the half moons were a bit leaky, and there too one could see the people who worked on this car before me were absolute tools. The same half moons were probably used like 3 times without even cleaning the old RTV off. Dremeled out the inside of the flange where the turbine housing mates onto the exhaust manifolds so the diameter matches, as the OEM exhaust manifolds are even narrower than the turbine housings as we all know. Even if this doesn't do much, I had them out anyways, so can't harm. Ideally one would port-match both the turbo and the manifold to the gasket size but I really didn't feel up to disassembling the turbine housings. Wrapped turbo outlet dumps in heat wrap band. Will do the frontpipe again as well as now the oil leak which promted me to tear apart half the engine in the first place is hopefully fixed. Fitted an ATI super damper to get rid of the worn old harmonic balancer. Surely one of the easiest and most worth to do mods. But torquing that ARP bolt to spec was a bitch without being able to lock the flywheel. Did some minor adjustments in the ECU tables to change some things I didn't like, like the launch control that was ALWAYS active. Treated rusty spots and surface corrosion on places I could get to and on many spots under the car, not pretty or ideal but good enough for now. Removed the N1 rear spats and the carbon surrounding for the tailpipe to put them back on with new adhesive as the old one was lifting in many spots, not pretty. Took out the passenger rear lamp housing... what do you know. Amateur work screwed me again here as they were glued in hard and removing it took a lot of force, so I broke one of the housing bolts off. And when removing the adhesive from the chassis the paint came right off too. Thankfully all the damaged area won't be visible later, but whoever did the very limited bodywork on this car needs to have their limbs chopped off piece by piece.   Quite a list if I do say so myself, but a lot of time was spent just discovering new shit that is wrong with the car and finding a solution or parts to fix it. My last problem that I now have the headache of dealing with is that the exhaust studs on the turbo outlets are M10x1.25 threaded, but the previous owner already put on regular M10 nuts so the threads are... weird. I only found this out the hard way. So now I will just try if I can in any way fit the front pipe regardless, if not I'll have to redo the studs with the turbos installed. Lesson learned for the future: Redo ALL studs you put your hands on, especially if they are old and the previous owners were inept maniacs. Thanks for reading if you did, will update when the engine runs again. Hope nothing breaks or leaks and I can do a test drive.
    • No those pads are DBA too  but they have colors too. I look at the and imo the green "street" are the best.
    • I’m not sure what happened I told them about sonic tunes free OTS tune and the next the I know .. I was booted..   To funny
    • Yea - I mean I've seen my fuel pump which is decades old and uh, while I'm not saying this with real knowledge... but I sure get the ick at using anything in the fuel system that produced the state of that pump. Many years ago I went through multiple pumps (and strainers) before I dropped the tank to clean it out with extreme violence. I'm talking the car would do maybe 50km before coming to a halt, which resulted in me cleaning out the filter with some brake cleaner and going on my way. None of my stuff ever looked like what came out of your fuel tank. I don't think I'd be happy with it unless every single component was replaced (or at least checked/cleaned/confirmed to be clean here).
