Does sound a litle suss, the cold cranking etc. Does it stall when you drive off and dip in the clutch? The best thing to is take it to a mechanic you trust, as at the end of the day we are all guessing.

Yeh and Fat32, i understand what you are saying about track work, about 2 months ago i stopped and looked at my vids of visits to the tracks. I estimate around 3,000kms of circuit driving have been done on my engine. To date my engine has 156,000kms so they are tough for a std engine.

Admittedly all those circuit kms were done with a std turbo, but i do give it some stick. Also as you may have experienced with the std turbo at the track there wasnt really much point revving the car much over 6,200rpm. Now with an aftermarket turbo my car wants to rev to 8,500. So if i need a new engine that is one of my considerations.

I am leaning towards a std import engine, but with GTR oil/water pumps as i see this helping the reliability of the engine more then pistons. Also change timing belt etc. The RB is well balanced / toleranced std so the whole blueprinting isnt as much a concern as say if i owned a 304.

Are you sure the prob you have at the minute is from oil surge, not just the age, use & abuse of the engine. Reason i ask is that i did a Wakefield day then less then a week later i backed up at Eastern Creek which is when after a gasket let go i changed the turbo. with all the noise from the leaking gasket i couldnt hear if the engine was crying for help. So on goes the new turbo and now i have this mystery noise.

Silly thing is that a didnt change oil between Wakefield and Eastern because im a lazy retard. So hence my concern about it being a bottom end bearing.

Not saying anyone has to agree, but these were some of my thoughts.

Benifits are more power/torque lower in the rpm.

I don't like lag. ;)

Quite some time ago a bloke on SDU ran a large TO4 with the NA inlet cam (232duration). He said it made his times quicker. It didn't appear to pull any power from up top and gave a noticible improvement down low and in the mid. I've typed the cam specs in to Dyno2003 and that is exactly what the NA inlet cam does. The power it does pull from up top wouldn't even be noticed. + you are only in the last 500-1000rpm for a fraction of a second.

All comes down to what you like. I'd prefer an RB20 which has better low down and mid range power to an RB20 that is peaky.

FAT32,

by the sounds of it, you're not looking for too much power out of your engine so forged pistons aren't really required for your application, although if you're looking at going for the added strength and reliability in forged pistons, then while you are there, i would recommend going for oversized pistons (80 or 82mm) as this will give u an increase in engine capacity (up to 2.2L) along with an increase in torque and power.

    • Yeah I also looked at Plazmaman, but, it ended up alot  cheaper getting black ones through EFI when you also added in the delivery cost
    • Nice shot! They look super clean. The roof rack delete on the black one is interesting. Would like to see more pictures from different angles. It's subtle but could make quite a difference to how the car looks in profile.
