Hi guys

Im looking to buy a NA as i just wrote off my last car (old car, small collission seems to have made a lot of damage, and therefore is a writeoff in the eyes of the insurance company)

On my green P's, so dont have a choice sadly

Looking for a R32 or R33, preferably stock and manual

Can anyone help me?

ive seen this been told, and even one of my mates told me to do that and i almost hit him for being such an idiot.

+ parts a genuinely cheaper to buy for turbos than they are for n/a's if you can friggin find the parts . but then again i guess many of the n/a owners on the forum get joe the mechanic down the road to do the work for them.

anywho back to the topic. in regards to this thread . many of my friends have been able to squeeze through there exemptions by passing 'their car' off as a business car and applying for it through the rta . do some investigations into it. i assure you it will be worth it

butch, u clearly dont know much about turbo vs n/a vehicles.... you say put the n/a stuff on.... is that including raising the compression? does that include changing the ecu? because otherwise the car will run like ass and a corolla will crap all over it.... u'd struggle to get up hills....

in the end...after u change headgaskets/exhaust manifold/intake lines and pipes/block of oil intake and return lines/block of water intake and return lines/exhaust dump-front/ecu/and the other crap.... u'd wish that the bloke that told u to do it on the forums had keept his mouth shut about a topic he knew little about......

another question about buying an N/A

would i be better to:

1. spend a fair bit less on a car that has done more k's and try and source a newer motor and put it in (thinking an RB25) or

2. spend a bit more on that elusive car that has done less k's (havent seen many under 100k, but looks like importing one i can get something around the 60k mark for about 10k or so)

tips that will help would be appreciated :P

Just remember that most of the cars that come from japan have had the clocks wound back or the dash changed so you never really know how many k's they have on them.

Mine had just under 200,000k's when i got it, 20,000 later and a lot of abuse from a hi flow wound up to 17psi its starting to show signs or wear, if i was you if everything looks good (rust, interior, hanging panels and general over all condition) get a thorough check done on it and go from there, these engines with a turbo on them has been proven to handle the k's if well looked after, no reason why you cant find a good high k one for cheaper.

What the guy above me said is spot on.

Assume that EVERY R33 has been wound back. I'm not saying they all are, but you really can't tell on some.

With that in mind, you pretty much can ignore the number of k's and just look at the condition of the car, how it drives, etc.

Be extra wary of any car under 100,000km because they're almost certainly wound back, and you'll just end up paying more for nothing.

yeh it sucks that it can be pretty easy to wind back the kms....

in my opinion, i still wouldnt go for skylines that have done over about ~150,000.... some may be fine and well looked after, but others I would say could start to show their issues at that stage....

I paid 12,000 ready on the road + insurance for my non turbo 33 gts4 in 2006... with apparently genuine kms of 84,000.... the racv inspection (I think its ~$100-200, depending on how indepth they check, tells a massive story... I did it 4 times... and 4 times it saved me from buying absolute lemons, even though they looked really good.... on the 5th time they said shes a really neat example and the kms seem about right and it was mine.... overall, i looked for about 9-10 months before I found 1 that was decent...I know now the hunt for non turbos is much higher due to the p plate laws.... still though, im happy I waited that long because the engine is strong and I have turboed it she still goes 100% perfect...

    • From there, it is really just test and assemble. Plug the adapter cables from the unit into the back of the screen, then the other side to the car harness. Don't forget all the other plugs too! Run the cables behind the unit and screw it back into place (4 screws) and you should now have 3 cables to run from the top screen to the android unit. I ran them along the DS of the other AV units in the gap between their backets and the console, and used some corrugated tubing on the sharp edges of the bracket so the wires were safe. Plug the centre console and lower screen in temporarily and turn the car to ACC, the AV should fire up as normal. Hold the back button for 3 sec and Android should appear on the top screen. You need to set the input to Aux for audio (more on that later). I put the unit under the AC duct in the centre console, with the wifi antenna on top of the AC duct near the shifter, the bluetooth antenna on the AC duct under the centre console The GPS unit on top of the DS to AC duct; they all seem to work OK there are are out of the way. Neat cable routing is a pain. For the drive recorder I mounted it near the rear view mirror and run the cable in the headlining, across the a pillar and then down the inside of the a pillar seal to the DS lower dash. From there it goes across and to one USB input for the unit. The second USB input is attached to the ECUtec OBD dongle and the 3rd goes to the USB bulkhead connected I added in the centre console. This is how the centre console looks "tidied" up Note I didn't install the provided speaker, didn't use the 2.5mm IPod in line or the piggyback loom for the Ipod or change any DIP switches; they seem to only be required if you need to use the Ipod input rather than the AUX input. That's it, install done, I'll follow up with a separate post on how the unit works, but in summary it retains all factory functions and inputs (so I still use my phone to the car for calls), reverse still works like factory etc.
    • Place the new daughterboard in the case and mount it using the 3 small black rivets provided, and reconnect the 3 factory ribbon cables to the new board Then, use the 3 piggyback cables from the daughterboard into the factory board on top (there are stand offs in the case to keep them apart. and remember to reconnect the antenna and rear cover fan wires. 1 screw to hold the motherboard in place. Before closing the case, make a hole in the sticker covering a hole in the case and run the cable for the android unit into the plug there. The video forgot this step, so did I, so will you probably. Then redo the 4 screws on back, 2 each top and bottom, 3 each side and put the 2 brackets back on.....all ready to go and not that tricky really.      
    • Onto the android unit. You need to remove the top screen because there is a daughterboard to put inside the case. Each side vent pops out from clips; start at the bottom and carefully remove upwards (use a trim remover tool to avoid breaking anything). Then the lower screen and controls come out, 4 screws, a couple of clips (including 3 flimsy ones at the top) and 3 plugs on the rear. Then the upper screen, 4 screws and a bunch of plugs and she is out. From there, remove the mounting brackets (2 screws each), 4 screws on the rear, 2 screws top and bottom and 3 screws holding in the small plates on each side. When you remove the back cover (tight fit), watch out for the power cable for the fan, I removed it so I could put the back aside. The mainboard is held in by 1 screw in the middle, 1 aerial at the top and 3 ribbon cables. If you've ever done any laptop stuff the ribbon cables are OK to work with, just pop up the retainer and they slide out. If you are not familiar just grab a 12 year old from an iphone factory, they will know how it works The case should now look like this:
    • Switching the console was tricky. First there were 6 screws to remove, and also the little adapter loom and its screws had to come out. Also don't forget to remove the 2 screws holding the central locking receiver. Then there are 4 clips on either side....these were very tight in this case and needed careful persuading with a long flat screw driver....some force required but not enough to break them...this was probably the fiddliest part of the whole job. In my case I needed both the wiring loom and the central locking receiver module to swap across to the new one. That was it for the console, so "assembly is the reverse of disassembly"
