hey guys

i have this annoying ticking/clicking noise coming from the front wheels or in that area and have no idea what it is. its never done that before and after the last SAU vic cruise through the great ocean road im getting this sound.

it sounds like when you have gravel or stones stuck in between your treads and makes a ticking/clicking noise everytime it hits the road. noise only comes on from 30kmph onwards and goes away when turning.

things i have done/checked.

jacked front up and gone through both the front wheels and nothing stuck to them or rubbing against them.

have checked the brake lines and coilovers, all bolts and everything else i can see on each strut and i still cant find the problem.

have also checked the brake pads just from the top and check to see if there is any movements and there isnt any and still heaps of meat on pads.

so ye i have no idea what it could be. all thats left for me to check is pull apart the brake and maybe the disks to see if its that but really dont want to lol.

any ideas what it could be???

Probably a wheel bearing, tie rod, or ball joint (or could be anything else that uses a bush). I have a bad wheel bearing and tie rod on the right side of my a31. Ticks like crazy.

I'm not exactly sure how to describe what to look for but here it goes: Jack the car up and try to make the wheel wobble or tilt. You will want to push on it from different angles. Don't be shy with it, you can push hard. If it does shift around, look under the car and see what part is loose.

Have you checked the black mud guard/panels within the wheel arch? I had this a few days ago and it only happened when boost kicked in, then when I eased off the throttle or else speed up it went away...

Found out the black plastic this was tapping against the kit.

ive got this tickin sound now too

seems to minimise after a 30mins drive, but last time i pulled over after drivin for 5 mins and had it idlin and it was still doin it ! so mines not suspension or wheels, sounds like sumfin metal just touchin another object

its weird and i cnt find where its comin from ! :P

I had this exact thing, ticking like a stone stuck in the tyre and would stop when turning, turned out it was a loose wheel nut??? LOL

+2. Has happened after each time I've had my wheel off to check/replace shock absorber. Just tightened all nuts again (even though the first time it was a good tightness) and was fine after that.

    • just an update to this, poor man pays twice  Tried sanding down the pulleys but it didnt do the trick. Chucked another second hand alternator in the na car which I got for free off my mate and its fixed the squelling. Must have been unlucky with the bearings.    As for my turbo car, I managed to pick up a cwc rb alternator conversion bracket + LS alternator for 250 off marketplace, looked to be in really good nick. Installed it , started the car and its not charging the battery.... ( Im not good with auto elec stuff so im not sure if this was all I needed to do but I verified such by using a multimeter on the battery when the engine was running and I was only getting 12.2v )   I had to modify the earth strap for the new LS alternator , factory earth strap was a 10mm bolt which did not fit the bolt on the LS alternator which was double the size so I cut it off , went to repco bought some ring terminals that fit, crimped it onto the old earth strap and bolted it up to the alternator , started the car and same issue. Ran like shit and was reading 12.2 at the battery.  For a "plug and play" advertised kit thats not very plug and play but alas.  My question is , am I missing something ? Ive been reading that some people recommend upgrading the stock 80 amp alternator fuse to a 140 amp but I dont see how that would stop the alternator charging especially at idle not under load.  Regardless ive pulled it out and am going to get it bench tested by an auto elec tomorrow but it would be handy to know if ive missed something silly or have done something wrong.
    • My wild guess is that you have popped off an intake pipe....check all of the hoses between the turbo and the throttle for splits or loose clamps.
    • Awesome, thanks for sharing!
    • To provide more specific help, more information is needed. What Android screen? What is its wiring diagram? Does the car's wiring have power at any required BAT and ACC wires, and is the loom's earth good?
    • So, now all you need to do is connect the 2 or 3x 12v feeds into the unit to permanent 12v, ACC 12V and IGN 12V that you can find in the spot behind the stereo, and the earth, and then it will switch on with the car.
