Just got a new clutch installed on my car and the workshop also changed the gearbox oil. They found some very fine metal fillings around the plug area and floating in the gearbox oil. He wrapped the filings up in paper so I could have a look, and yeah if i rub it between my fingers it's definately there...

I know it's not good, what should I do? :) Any quick checks I can do before I drive it off a cliff :)

On another note there's some sort of noticeable spinning noise coming from the passenger floor. Could a machined flywheel cause that or is it just the clutch bedding in etc?

The noise should go away when the clutch is engaged, if so it's pretty normal.

rofl, who told you that?

when does it make the noise, clutch engaged/disengaged? f**ked bearings will make a noise, could be the throwout bearing (was this replaced with the clutch?) or even the input shaft bearing.

the only noise a box should make is the rattle when a multi plate clutch is disengaged, or straight cut gears.

Sounds like gearbox shaft bearing to me. Does it get noisy in gears like 3rd or 5th? My R31 did that. I broke some teeth off 3rd gear, and then it was noisy in 3rd and 5th. Got worse and louder as I went on. Fillings can get stuck in ur bearings or just wear it out real quick. Best to completely flush ur gearbox and baby it. Use redline lightweight shock proof oil to ease the situation, buts its bad. Save up cash for a new 33 box.

I agree, sounds like bearings, don't be too worried, but it probably is time to start saving for a box!

Had the same problem in my s14 (filings) and from memory my mechanic used a different box oil to prolong its life.

The noise only happens when im driving normally, if the clutch is pressed the noise will disappear, but as soon as I release the clutch it comes back. I dont know if it'll be a huge problem (its not clunking or extremely loud) as its only just happened as soon as I got the clutch installed. But the kit I had replaced the clutch, pressure plate and release bearing. It might be "wearing in" sort of speak, I think I might leave it for a week or so. I was more worried about the metal in my gearbox oil :(

But yeah everything feels right with the car and I have crunched my gears once or twice since owning, cant believe I didn't think of that :P

My car does that too.

Because it doesn't do it when the clutch is pushed in, it means it is not the thrust bearing but the gearbox bearings.

Wouldn't worry about it until something breaks. My gearbox has made that sound for the last 1.5 years and hasn't gotten better or worse, even after changing the oil. I have been to advanced driver trainings and drags and its still all good.

I am still expecting it to break with the extra power being put through the crappy RB20 gearbox, but it keeps on trucking :P

As for the metal shavings, I had those too when i changed the oil. Thats what the magnet on the gearbox sump plug is for :(

Yeah, its bearings. When the gearbox is spinning in gear or in neutral when the flywheel and clutch are in contact it will make that noise. So its not the thrust bearing as said b4.

My R31 did that cos I double the power output of the engine on a 20 year old box. My bearing noises got worse and worse until the box broke.

You can pick yourself up off the floor if that's possible, mis-spelling one word isn't the end of the world. :P But thanks for making the effort.

It's exactly as I meant, you can hear the bearing when the clutch is engaged (easy to hear at idle), but when you dis-engage it goes away. It's a normal thing with most aftermarket clutches & naturally it seems odd the first time you hear it after you knew what the previous clutch sounded like.

Oh and because you say it's quite noticeable on the passenger side it could be the box, but weird if it's only noticeable after an oil change. The clutch bearing sound generally seems to be coming from right under your feet, not on the other side....

what did you mis-spell?

either way, there shouldn't be any noises... i've had a stock clutch, os giken super single, exedy single, and now a custom built single plate, not one has made a noise.

Hold on hold on hold on....

He said the noise disappears when the clutch in engaged, so it is not the thrust bearing. As the thrust bearing is working while the clutch is engaged...

And i would have thought you shouldn't be able to hear a brand new thrust bearing?!?

    • Hi GTSBoy, Excuse my ignorance but what does a "Bad" Knee point mean ?
    • HFM BM57 has a "bad" knee point, IIRC. It's not the same thing as the later R chassis MC.
    • The ATTESSA is functionally identical to R34; there were a bunch of JDM models that continued ATTESSA including Fuga/Q70, Skyline/Q50, Cima etc as an option. All with Auto only and I think mostly for snow regions. AFAIK there were no AWD VR30DDTT sold in Australia - it is on my to do list to check regs for racing a LHD car in Targa/ATR/AASA/CAMS events because if I can get the auto to work it would be interesting to run a 4wd car The Ecuteck TCM tuning is the same model as their ECU tuning, they already have it for R35 and Dose's favourite, BMW. You buy "points" to allow your computer to be tuned, buy either a bluetooth (phone app) or bluetooth+USB+Key (phone and PC) dongle, and pay for a tune that will be locked to your tuner ( ). You can also access the tuning software yourself but 1. it is mega expensive and 2. these computers have a billion parameters that intersect, so how could you ever spend enough time on it to get a decent result.
    • Or, is it a case of what it is like owning an R series Skyline? NFI what the previous owner has done or fiddled with... Ha ha ha After reading through this thread, I went on a bit of a research about the Q50/Q60. Now I'm quite intrigued by them! Is the AWD in them more like a WRX where it's always AWD, or is it more like the ATTESSA in the GTRs? By the sound of this TCU tuning, this sounds like a case of someone has made some real software for it, and you just need the right piece of hardware, and then you license that specific vehicle/TCU. Or is this a case of the software will be really expensive so only a few tuners have it, and you still have to pay a license per vehicle?
    • By popular demand.. it was a coil. Got my hands on 1 new OEM coil, replaced with the one that made the less noise difference when I unplugged it while the car was running and started the car up. No stutter and the engine light was gone. I guess I’ll buy the other 5 they have lol
