Hi Guys,

Pretty new to the GTR scene, i have a 1994 R32 GTR That has 2x 2860-7 turbo's running 22psi. It doesn't have a catch can but needs one as i looked in the intake and there was a puddle of oil! So what do people run in GTR's? Something that looks stock(ish) is preffered. My mate has 3 in his GTR, yes 3! And i certainly dont want that!

most guys re-locate the battery and sit it down behind the D/S headlight.

yeah i dont want to do that if i can avoid it! I have seen ones that sit at the back of the cylinder head where the standard oil breather hose runs. From hi octane racing i believe i have seen them. On my wrx i had a small one about 25mm thick that fit between the battery and the headlight.

Putting the liquid that separates out of your blow by back into your sump is retarded. It will contaminate your oil, and all for what gain? Not having to add a couple extra drops of oil next time you check it? Dumb.

Put an external vent on the sump. Any blowby gases will now vent directly through that as opposed to travelling up the oil galleries and out the PCV on the head (picking up oil as it goes), also helps the oil drainage from the head because now the gases aren't rushing past in the opposite direction.

best one is one that fits between standard battery and headlight and use 22mm pipe to it. leave the bride from left to right cover in place. block the other outlet on the passenger side, then on the remaining drivers side outlet send that to the can. have a large vent on the can and put a filter on it as your engine breathes out as well as in! you can fit a 3l can in that space which is plenty. NOTE: this wont work if you have a big arse battery. switch back to a small stock size battery, not only will you now have more space, but you save some weight too. :)

I had the catch can mounted between the battery and the headlight on the old setup. It's pretty neat and tidy.

On the new setup had a custom built can mounted were the ABS used to be. Saves having big ugly hoses running down the engine bay too.

I have one of those, but I haven't got around to mounting it because I wasn't 100% how to mount it correctly. Since we are on the topic, is this the correct way to do it for a "vent to atomosphere" setup? Also, what are other benefits or cons, if any for running a catch can apart from reducing the amount of oil going into the intake?

Yes i'd say that looks correct. The one on my WRX vented to Atmo AND had one go back to the air intake and i never had an issue. If i cant find one, i will get one custom made up to suit.

I must say, this GTR is a much more exciting car than the WRX. Im glad i moved on to the GTR team :thumbsup:

Is there any disadvantage for venting to the atomosphere? Apart from the fact that if there are a lot of oil, then it won't return back to the sump?

Also, wouldn't doing the above basically introduce a vacuum leak into the system??

No leak if you block off all the old connections. stock setup the blow-by goes back in to the intake and is combusted not back in to the sump.

I have one of those, but I haven't got around to mounting it because I wasn't 100% how to mount it correctly. Since we are on the topic, is this the correct way to do it for a "vent to atomosphere" setup? Also, what are other benefits or cons, if any for running a catch can apart from reducing the amount of oil going into the intake?

yea mate that is spot on. Yes that set-up is illegal for road use as it vens to atmosphere but it's the best performance wise as none of the crap is making it back into your intake. if you want to keep it legal the end with the filter can be plumbed back to the right of that picture where the original set-up fed into the intake.

Could someone be able to please give some factual clarification as per the post by Moodles earlier in the thread, is using the oil/air separator a bad idea, i dont quite understand sorry doesnt it separate the oil so to drain it back to the sump.? If that is being produced from the engine does it change in form somehow to warrant it contaminated once it is separated and draining back down to the sump.

I run this item and was told it was ok, but if somehow i have been miss guided i would like to know so that i will have to change the set up for the better option as stated by the Baron earlier.

You recirc it back into the intake so it'll get burnt up for emissions compliance stuff, just like stock does, or you just vent it to atmosphere and it doesn't gum up your intercooler piping. DO NOT DUMP THAT BACK INTO YOUR SUMP.

Please, somebody try to argue with me and say putting what comes out of your blow by catch can back into your oil sump is a good idea. I need some good entertainment.

Nismo have their own oil air seperator (sits on the passenger side near the ABS unit), the picture I linked above is the Autech design, and Mine's Triple Flow Cam Cover Baffles which sit inside the rocker cover and do the exact same thing (seperating the oil from the air and sending it back into the engine). So your argument is that Nismo, Autech and Mines don't know what they're doing? Obviously oil/air seperators aren't ideal on the street where your trying to squeeze 5000km out of every oil change, but whereas on the track you should be running a fresh oil change beforehand anyway

correct!!! here is my set up using a essential catch can from greenline.jp and i went and bought a k&n filter locally

    • A few small updates since the previous post and lessons. I decided to do a little interior light upgrade on the 110. I quite like the iilumo items, even if they're a bit of a premium over other brands. You'll also note the Stedi Fogs, that will go into the S15 fog lights as I needed to match the bulbs since I got the new ones earlier. I hope they fit as the body is quite a bit longer than your normal bulb.  Annoyingly, I managed to trip the fuse, which normally wouldn't be an issue until I located the fuse. I can't say I've ever come across this. I had lucked out that someone nearby had a spare, but oddly enough Toyota dealerships seem to keep this in stock. I ordered some to keep in my stash and as luck would have it, someone else nearby tripped the same fuse so I passed on the favour.  I also did a little service on the 110 ahead of some additional work coming up. It's been annoying that Goleby's stopped carrying this particular HKS filter for the 110, so now I need to keep them on order from Japan. I also took the opportunity to install a bash plate and number plate riser. The plate riser is such a cheap but nice fix to help really tidy up the car. I'm tempted to now also replace my headlights, on this car. Both items were from Project Aero.    I also needed to replace the rear tyres on the 110, and after trying to get it aligned learnt that I need to replace some bushes in the front end, so that's next.  Closing out this update with a nicer picture as always!

    • Appreciate the correction on the "ground", that will make a huge difference to looking at this. That makes complete sense about AF70/AF71 which is what I had come down to being the issue, one of these. I'll have another look in the ignition wiring when I get a chance next week. I'll also make up a jumper wire for running that AF73 test.  ECU is fine, relay itself is fine, pump harness is fine and the pump itself is fine. I am going to upgrade the Walbro 255 anyway with a DW300 I have since I need to replace the fuel sender and I'm going to upgrade the FPR with my chasebays kit ready for new plenum/injectors/dbw, but I'll get this working first. That's why this is so frustrating.
