Hi all,

Im putting in a new head unit in my brothers Volvo haha V40. Went with entry level alpine unit with hi-speed ipod control from Tonkins (cheers Ben :) )

The old unit didnt have a constant power to it just to acc powers and 2 grounds (WTF stupid germans). Where will be the easiest place to steal constant power from? The ciggie lighter is acc aswell :P Im thinking maybe the ignition itself would be the shortest to run a cable and their must be constant power their. Any ideas?

I really CBF running a line direct from the battery and fusing it...

Also the stock headunit controlled all 6 speakers (4 2 ways i think and 2 tweaters) the alpine unit ive hooked up to the 4 speakers is their anyway i can hook up the tweeters aswell without buying more gear cos hes a full on tight ass when it comes to his car. as long as its got fuel and a few empty iced coffee cartons floating in it he's happy

Cheers,

Chris

post audio here

the car has two grounds????, one is a light switch which shows ground until the lights are turned on, then goes to 12volts if you use a test meter ?

this is a volvo wiring diagram, check your model here

http://www.volvoclub.org.uk/faq/MaintenanceManuals.html

Main radio harness 13-pin connector (for large 14-pin radio connector):

pin 1 (brown/white) left dash speaker (+)

pin 2 (grey/red) right dash speaker (+)

pin 3 (brown) left dash speaker (-)

pin 4 (grey) right dash speaker (-)

pin 6 (yellow/white pair) night dimmer (from headlight switch & relay)

pin 7 (white) dash dimmer (+) (connected to dash lighting rheostat)

pin 8 (blue) dash dimmer (-)

pin 9 (green/red pair) +12v from battery (and to optional CD player)

pin 10 (black pair) chassis ground

pin 11 (orange) +12v from ignition (via fuse 14)

pin 12 (green/grey) power antenna motor control output (switched on/off with radio on/off) or power for in-window antenna amplifier (see note below)

pins 5,13 (not connected)

Speaker harness 13-pin connector (from small 10-pin radio connector):

pin 2 (green/orange) left front door +

pin 6 (orange/black) left front door -

pin 3 (orange/white) right front +

pin 7 (black/orange) right front -

pin 8 (blue/pink) left rear +

pin 12 (brown/pink) left rear -

pin 9 (pink/white) right rear +

pin 13 (pink/black) right rear -

pins 1,4,5,10,11 (not connected)

funny enough I answer questions in the audio forum part, and so does chris rogers and a few others...lol

your guide is located here, pm me if you need help still, cheers

see it says Chasis ground plack pair?

So i should look for green/red for the constant 12V

What about the illumination/dimmer on the unit what one of those do i use?

mate , use a multimeter to test it, guides can be wrong and I take no responsibility if you fry a radio, set off the airbag, or toast the car computer with a test light.

if your not sure have it installed by a pro installer. what part of town do you live in ? I might be able to test the wires for you time permitting?

Jack 88 on here does mobile installs, pm him

check to see if you have a dash clock, dome light ? I would suss you have a blown fuse off the constant power wire. you dont need to run a wire to the battery on new car?

check the fuses

is there anything else on the dash that doesnt work ? or has anyone hacked up the harness before ?

if all else fails, I would take it somewhere to have it looked at, to cut into the main harness to solder one on is best left to someone who knows what to do, there is a wire in the steering wheel area and possibly elsewhere depending on the year that contains the airbag, ground it out and bang the airbag goes off with your face mm from it.

best of luck, but check the fuses as above , if the car electrical is working properly, you shouldnt have trouble finding constant power near the radio

do not circumvent a fuse,or increase the amp rating .. fix it right or risk fire

    • ok so if i wanted to go 18's i would go for 8's  in front 30+ or 32+ off set at front and the back 9 would be ok? what offset should i aim for.. then can i do some  hunting for wheel rim choices..    If i get this - will this fit all around: Size: 18 x 8.5 +37 - n what tyres size tyre should i get for front n back?
    • Absolute f*cking nightmare. I had to take breaks constantly, and I was always pissed off when I got home. The line split in Italy on day 2 (we drove from the Netherlands), lol. Driving any narrow European town was... well, sh*t.   Appreciate it man. Here, I'll just drop a favourite from the load I took on Saturday.   I'll update here when things happen with the car, the thing is, with stock power and almost everything chassis-wise taken care of, there really are no problems. 268,000kms now and counting.
    • Ah! I actually managed to snag a lightly used set.... that aren't so suitable for me right now. They don't work on a GTT without some cutting or creative heat moulding. I thought about reselling them myself cause I didn't want to murder them, but it looks like I'm probably going to attempt to murder them/melt them because I may as well. @GTSBoy @PranK can somebody close this thread?
    • Hey mate,  I have a set, one is slightly damaged but wont be noticable once installed.  Shoot me a message if your still after them
    • I couldn't wait But, the black constant tension hose clamps were too thick and there wasn't enough clearance at the T/B and I couldn't get it to seat properly, so I had use a silver one there I also added some 3" silicone over the alloy bit that goes through to hole on the radiator support as it looked like it was sitting on the edge of the hole in the radiator support, I never noticed a rattle or anything, but there was a witness mark It is basicly done, and I can live with the silver hose clamp at the T/B, I will get a black clamp for the head vent though where it is attached to the bulkhead fitting  It never stops...LOL, only issue now with the shock tower brace is it slightly touches the under bonnet liner now, if I leave it it will either wear some paint off the brace where it touches, or damage the liner, so I removed the liner to see what I have to work with, with the liner removed I have about 20mm of clearance, but sadly the middle part of the underside of the bonnet is only dusted with paint and looks crap, so I cannot have that, but.... as I have a roll of Carbuilders premium under bonnet insulation in the garage laying around that is only 5.5mm thick (we were going to use it on the boys Patrol, but he crashed the front of it a few months and it was written off, hence why he now drives my old Honda Accord Euro), I'll use the OEM liner as a template and get the Carbuilders stuff fitted up to cover that dusted paint up
