Adz
Our good buddy Theo would sort us out. That would be a blast. You could count me in for that. I better go out and get a job.... Count me in!!! Phatboy
Nice one Aaron. Congrats on mid-8 times with a Scirocco. Is it stock apart from suspension/roll cage? Sorry, youtube's currently blocked for me. Is this the same length of track that is regularly used for lap records? eg., 7.59 for R33 GTR with the legend Walter Rohrl, 7.26 for R35? If so, then your driving ability in a much slower VW is insane! Snowman
No it's not. For us plebs we can only access what is know as the BTG (Bridge to Gantry) time - which is basically the whole track minus the massive straight. So its only 19.2km of the 20.8km course. It should take about 30s to do that straight at an average speed of 250km/hr. But for example on that Top Gear Episode that JC tried to break 10mins in the Jag (and then Sabine tried to break 10mins in a Van) - they were using the BTG time as well. If you look at the "track records" page that has the Veyron in it - that was BTG as well. Unless you hire the track as an individual you will never be able to do anything other than the BTG time (since you can only ever do 1 lap at a time and you start at the back of the straight and get off at the begining of it), so that is what most people test themselves against. NickR33
even so he was seriously hauling in the VW... some very clean driving, not too mention pretty brave to hold it flat 90% of the time! especially only after a few laps there, well done:) Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/275749-my-lap-of-the-nurburgring/page/2/#findComment-4675659 Share on other sites
Aaron34
thanks folks. Adz is going later in the year and he's likely to raise the bar again. I have to workout how much excess baggage I will have to pay to take the R34 over there. The black Porsche that blew past me would be getting blown past by me instead. Man its good. The average speed for that time is around 140 kph, which would give you a lap of the Island at around 1min 55seconds. The Island will never be the same again. Think the GTR has to go to find a cheap car to do Targa... No silver spoon to feed from Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/275749-my-lap-of-the-nurburgring/page/2/#findComment-4676650 Share on other sites
Phatboy
Thanks for clearing that up Snowy. Clarkson isn't a terrible driver - so Aaron's 8 and 1/2 in a similarly powered, albeit slightly lighter and better handling car is pretty good versus 10 mins in an S-Type. Aaron, wouldn't hiring a GT3 from the same company for the day be way cheaper than shipping your R34 across? You wouldn't be able to get insurance for the R, right, so I guess you wouldn't want to go 100% in it, which kind of defeats the purpose. I don't think insurance is an issue for Aaron, he's been to countless track days here in Aus with the R34. Plus it would smash the GT3... Snowman
And also from experience I can tell you that sitting in an unfamiliar LHD powerfull car means you spend a great part of you concentration on doing things within the car (i.e. shifting gears with your right hand takes THINKING about - it doesn't just happen without thought like it does in your own car) which means you can't attack the track anywhere near as well. Its the same reason why when we know people are going there we suggest the VW Golf or the Scirocco - because it is a DSG and it means if you want to you can just leave it an Auto and drive (which is exactly what Aaron did in that lap). But being in the familiarity of your own car you could do the same thing. And our cars would HAMMER around there. It's such a fast track and that perfectly suits the GT-R's! Aaron34
too right Snowman. Your advice with taking the DSG was gold. You have to watch the kerbs on the right side because some of the speeds you could hit them at would probably roll the car. I dragged out a DVD I haven't watched for years. Its a GTR DVD made in the UK around 2003 and it has a Mines tuned black R34 owned by an Asian dude from England in the hands of a ring master with 10,000 laps. The guy is also one of the Nissan testers that lapped the ring over and over again during the development of the 32, 33 and 34. He breezed in a 8.29 without pushing. He had major traffic in some places as well. The GTR was regularly pulling 280 kph. A quick car would be a totally different experience and one where you would have to be soooo much more careful.. Happy to copy for anyone if the haven't seen it. Re-inspired me to love the 34 some more... I like it when Shin - the name of the guy that owns the car used in the clip goes - [engrish]"don'ta jump, the car is tloo low it's set up for sirverstone'[/engrish]. Great vid - and dont forget Aaron, it was pissing down for half his lap too. It's funny as they were testing pre-release Azeni RT-215's - in my opinion the best non r-spec tyres I've used (well as of 2005!!). I have an AVI file of it if anyone can host it. I don't know the cover so I am not sure if that is it (Dane) Started pissing on the last three corners. Which are some of the fastest on the track. He also rolled over the line and was held up my bikes a few times. I reckon he could have pushed it into a sub 8.00 lap. Shows how fast the new one must be to pull a mid 7min lap of the full track... There is 16-18 seconds in the straight from the G to B We have to expect Snowman to pull a high 1min 20 somthing at Winton with that kind of performance... Snowman
LOL - I think the average speed at Winton is a little lower than at the Nurburgring When you consider that the average speed of what the R35 did to do 7:26 at the Ring is higher than what a V8 Supercar does as an average speed around Phillip Island I don't think you can really compare the times... Still - I'm sure I can be faster than your R34 at Winton Although I might not be coming to Winton anymore. I might be going back to try and break your 8.36.6 instead Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/275749-my-lap-of-the-nurburgring/page/2/#findComment-4680811 Share on other sites

Snowman
Right - I'm booked in for July 25th. That gives me a month of Playstation practise so I can have a crack at this 8:36 rubbish. Given I near crapped my pants doing 9.12 in a more powerfull car last time out I don't like my chances. LOL (abiet I only did 1 dry lap last time and that was my first one). Which car you going for? or are you doing the deal with Anthony Moss. If you had the money and the time, as expensive as the Mossy thing sounds, its bloody good value...
