Hey I just thought I would start a thread on my next challenge. Im going to try and squeeze the HX35 in my LHD RB25 swapped 240sx. So far I can tell that will definitely need a spacer somewhere around 3/4 inch and some oil plumbing.

Any input would be great and I have read through every thread on here and other forums on the Holset swaps. Really excited and awaiting a few last parts. Will start taking pics and keeping everything up to date but due to working 6 days a week time is my only factor.

So far engine mods are:

FMIC

Profec B

550cc injectors

3inch exhaust (no cat)

Greddy EMU (unsure if this will be my final route)

Holset HX35W 8 blade

Custom huge oil cooler

Yes you wil need a spacer. I made one out of 2 10mm flanges welded together and put a devider in the spacer to keep it split pulse. I also used a gasket on each side of the spacer sp the total thickness would be around 23mm thick. you would not want to go any thinner than this. as my comp housing is VERY close to the manifold.

you can fit the oem heatshield but you will have to cut a section out of it to clear the comp housing. you will also have to cut one of the cast standoffs on the manifold off to clear the compressor cover.

best way to do all this is to take the manifold off and fit the turbo to the manifold on a workbench. you will also have to rotate the compressor cover and exhaust housing for the rb orentation.

the internal wastegate will fit but you need to cut the mounting bracket and bolt it on in another position and shorten the actuator rod.

I am going to take some better photos and update them in my thread. these might help.

other than that, if yours is lhd i am not sure but the p/s resivoir on mine has to be modified to clear the turbo!

Pls update your thread with pics. And do you reckon leaving holset original internal wastegate is a good idea ? What psi is holset actuator opens at ?

im putting one on a rb25det for my 260z that im building...

i am getting a 20mm spacer made up at the moment for mine, costing a little over $100 but should be worth it!

im keeping mine internal gate but i have a softer actuator for mine as the holset one probably wont open till high teens of psi but it just depends what boost you want.

might look into the porting of the wastegate but i havnt read up about it yet...

anyways best of luck should be good!

Well I guess I will take the manifold off tonight and try to get some pictures up asap for you. as for the internal gate i had read in your thread CEF11e you had to modify the internal gate and how has it held up for you? As well anyinput on tuning this setup with the Greddy EMU??

you can use the stock actuator. I modified mine (not the gate) and will have to draw up a diagram of what i dod to mine to make it fit. also, once the mod is done you could quite easily set the actuator at about 10psi if you wanted to.

You should probably port the gate before you put it on but mine seems to hold boost fine, but as cjmartz has said others have been having trouble keeping boost stady with the stock gate.

Hmmm, the EMU is probably not the best choice unless you already have one :) I would remap the stock ecu. or run the rb25 on an rb20 ecu remapped :)

I already picked up the EMU with the motor and it basically just came with it in the deal.

I ended up working on a mates 07 WRX and installing a VF30 turbo with VF39 internals.... anyways it was a good night and we saw some great results.

24 hours in a day just aint enough anymore.....

The whole holset thing is overated i would only ever reccomend them to self installers, the sheer cost of getting someone to fit it for you far outweighs any other attribute (plentyof other turbos match the respone and power). Of those i have had come through the shop and seen online they are no more responsive than a similar garret turbo but are 10 times harder to fit.

They are however excellent turbo's and if installed your self offer unrivalled kick ass value for money, if your looking for a "wonder' turbo like many believe they are you will be sorely dissapointed, you can get better results far easier for a few $$$ more.

they are not a magic turbo, just a damn good one that are cheap but by no means easy to fit.

its amazing how many customers come in and go "how much to fit" thier holsets..... then run down the street screaming. :) budget about 3 times the cost of a garret or similar.

I wouldn't say over rated, but yeah, they aren't magical by any means. They are the best bang for the buck out there IMHO as I stated in my other thread. They perform every bit as well as ball bearing GT series turbos and far as spool and hp go. One are the fall "short" in is that they are HUGE physically. If you are doing the top mount route though, they are exactly the same as installing any other externally gated turbo, except the don't cost $1500 and can be rebuilt on the cheap. I don't think a holset would be my first choice for a bottom or side mount where space is a concern, but I wouldn't trade my top mounted HX40 for a GT35r any day.

In summary, best thing about them is the price to performance ratio, but if you are going to have to pay a lot of $ to install it bottom/side mount (because you can't do it yourself like CEF11 did :) ) then you are kind of defeating the main purpose of running a holset.

Back from 6 feet under! 2009 kicked my ass financialy but anyways car is back in full effect for this year due to a new job for my wife and I both!!

Anyways I just painted my engine bay and currently have the motor in for new headgasket and ARP studs as well as seeing if I can afford to slip some Poncams in well its apart but most likely not happening yet.

Picked up a Tial 38mm WG and currently trying to take care of the plumbing of the oil lines.

If anyone could pass on some info on tuning options or what to expect from the Greddy EMU it would be greatly appreciated. I have read through the FAQ but still get alot of negative feedback where I live. I just need to know if I should start saving for a different engine management or continue on the route I have started. Really excited as I have put alot of time and managed to keep my car through tough times.

The only problem I have found with my Emanage ultimate install is that you are constantly fighting the factory ecu for control. If there was a better option for me like remapping I would have jumped on it.

Yeah I got The EMU with my old motor but from it being fairly stock I never used it. I was looking at the Nistune but after you get a Z32 Ecu and Type 2 board etc you could buy a PFC. I really dont have a ton of funds to spend on the ECU but definitly need to drive it. One guy I know managed to run his on the SAFC2 but it isnt very realible source of tuning in my opinon.

I only drive maybe 3-5000kms a year if that. So I just want to be able to go out start it and drive might have to look into a new option

As you already have a wideband and the emanage, you may as well give it a go. Mine runs great, just took a lot of dyno time to sort out. Also the rb's have better tuner support so you should be all good.

Anyone able to chime in with some help on a few questions. I performed a search and was unable to find much help.

Can I run a ¨Blow through MAf¨ with the Greddy EMU? (Z32)

Can I run GM LS Coil packs with Greddy EMU?

And any insight, just getting close and needing to finish up the little stuff and start tuning!!!!

    • Did this end up working? Did you take some pictures?
    • And finally, the front lower mount. It was doubly weird. Firstly, the lower mount is held in with a bracket that has 3 bolts (it also acts as the steering lock stop), and then a nut on the shock lower mount itself. So, remove the 3x 14mm head bolts , then the 17mm nut that holds the shock in. From there, you can't actually remove the shock from the lower mount bolt (took me a while to work that out....) Sadly I don't have a pic of the other side, but the swaybar mounts to the same bolt that holds the shock in. You need to push that swaybar mount/bolt back so the shock can be pulled out past the lower control arm.  In this pic you can see the bolt partly pushed back, but it had to go further than that to release the shock. Once the shock is out, putting the new one in is "reverse of disassembly". Put the top of the shock through at least one hole and put a nut on loosely to hold it in place. Put the lower end in place and push the swaybar mount / shock bolt back in place, then loosely attach the other 2 top nuts. Bolt the bracket back in place with the 14mm head bolts and finally put the nut onto the lower bolt. Done....you have new suspension on your v37!
    • And now to the front.  No pics of the 3 nuts holding the front struts on, they are easy to spot. Undo 2 and leave the closest one on loosely. Underneath we have to deal with the wiring again, but this time its worse because the plug is behind the guard liner. You'll have to decide how much of the guard liner to remove, I undid the lower liner's top, inside and lower clips, but didn't pull it full off the guard. Same issue undoing the plug as at the rear, you need to firmly push the release clip from below while equally firmly gripping the plug body and pulling it out of  the socket. I used my fancy electrical disconnect pliers to get in there There is also one clip for the wiring, unlike at the rear I could not get behind it so just had to lever it up and out.....not in great condition to re-use in future.
    • Onto the rear lower shock mount. It's worth starting with a decent degrease to remove 10+ years of road grime, and perhaps also spray a penetrating oil on the shock lower nut. Don't forget to include the shock wiring and plug in the clean.... Deal with the wiring first; you need to release 2 clips where the wiring goes into the bracket (use long nose pliers behind the bracket to compress the clip so you can reuse it), and the rubber mount slides out, then release the plug.  I found it very hard to unplug, from underneath you can compress the tab with a screwdriver or similar, and gently but firmly pull the plug out of the socket (regular pliers may help but don't put too much pressure on the plastic. The lower mount is straightforward, 17mm nut and you can pull the shock out. As I wasn't putting a standard shock back in, I gave the car side wiring socket a generous gob of dialectric grease to keep crap out in the future. Putting the new shock in is straightforward, feed it into at least 1 of the bolt holes at the top and reach around to put a nut on it to hold it up. Then put on the other 2 top nuts loosely and put the shock onto the lower mounting bolt (you may need to lift the hub a little if the new shock is shorter). Tighten the lower nut and 3 upper nuts and you are done. In my case the BC Racing shocks came assembled for the fronts, but the rears needed to re-use the factory strut tops. For that you need spring compressors to take the pressure off the top nut (they are compressed enough when the spring can move between the top and bottom spring seats. Then a 17mm ring spanner to undo the nut while using an 8mm open spanner to stop the shaft turning (or, if you are really lucky you might get it off with a rattle gun).
    • You will now be able to lift the parcel shelf trim enough to get to the shock cover bolts; if you need to full remove the parcel shelf trim for some reason you also remove the escutcheons around the rear seat release and you will have to unplug the high stop light wiring from the boot. Next up is removal of the bracket; 6 nuts and a bolt Good news, you've finally got to the strut top! Remove the dust cover and the 3 shock mount nuts (perhaps leave 1 on lightly for now....) Same on the other side, but easier now you've done it all before
