I bought an engine of a guy on here and after speaking to a couple of mates and checking the timing on it , it seems to be out a fair bit.

engine didnt come with a timing belt or idler & tensioner pulleys (dont know why...)

after speaking to my mate FOOLBOOST about the engine he has pointed out to check where the cams and crank are set to , checked this out and this is how its looking :)

Right Cam :

Crank:

now , obviously its out by a fair bit, does anyone know if this would of caused damage to the valves with the pistons slapping them or should it be fine ?

whats my next step ?

thanks.

the images dont explian much unless the crank is TDC, the cams should rotate 2 times to the cranks 1 rotation, the pics u have put up look roughly where they should be. Rotating the cams and crank back to their marks from where they are should not cause any damage.

ok you know where the cams go so line them up as for the crak that dot needs to be moved to the right side as there is a timing mark there some where....if you had a better pid i would point it out but it is to hard to make out

Pistons have a spacific clearance so they dont smash the valves yeah? Someone confirm this?

dont know about that wayne ;/

my rb26dett made love to the valves on cylinder six

could be different in the rb25det ? ?

the rb25 is still an interference design, so pistons will still kiss valves in the event of a timing belt snap.

As for the position of the crank as it is now, it's fine; the engine isn't running so as long as no one has tried to turn the engine over too forcefully nothing will be damaged.

take the spark plugs out, stick a 27mm socket on the crank bolt and turn the crank slowly clockwise. There is a v shaped cut out on the oil pump housing (pretty much opposite where the dot is now) that lines up with the dot on the pulley. With the plugs out it should turn over easily. It may touch valves while you are doing this so you may have to rotate the cams slightly forward or back to clear. Touching won't hurt them, just don't try and force anything. The cams are near enough. with no belt they will rotate stightly off tdc due to the pressure of the valve springs on the lobe

I can see idler and tensioner in the photos? What i'd be worried about is you have no bolt in the vct gear and the spring and cover/oil seal are missing. get that bolt and seal installed before anything else.

According to the pic of the crank pulley, the engine is not at TDC #1. So everything in the pics means nothing.

Bring the crank around so the dot on the pulley lines up with the dash on the timing case. Then check the cam pulleys. They might be 180 out, so bring the crank around another revolution and check the cam pulleys.

    • Bit of a pity we don't have good images of the back/front of the PCB ~ that said, I found a YT vid of a teardown to replace dicky clock switches, and got enough of a glimpse to realize this PCB is the front-end to a connected to what I'll call PCBA, and as such this is all digital on this PCB..ergo, battery voltage probably doesn't make an appearance here ; that is, I'd expect them to do something on PCBA wrt power conditioning for the adjustment/display/switch PCB.... ....given what's transpired..ie; some permutation of 12vdc on a 5vdc with or without correct polarity...would explain why the zener said "no" and exploded. The transistor Q5 (M33) is likely to be a digital switching transistor...that is, package has builtin bias resistors to ensure it saturates as soon as base threshold voltage is reached (minimal rise/fall time)....and wrt the question 'what else could've fried?' ....well, I know there's an MCU on this board (display, I/O at a guess), and you hope they isolated it from this scenario...I got my crayons out, it looks a bit like this...   ...not a lot to see, or rather, everything you'd like to see disappears down a via to the other side...base drive for the transistor comes from somewhere else, what this transistor is switching is somewhere else...but the zener circuit is exclusive to all this ~ it's providing a set voltage (current limited by the 1K3 resistor R19)...and disappears somewhere else down the via I marked V out ; if the errant voltage 'jumped' the diode in the millisecond before it exploded, whatever that V out via feeds may have seen a spike... ....I'll just imagine that Q5 was switched off at the time, thus no damage should've been done....but whatever that zener feeds has to be checked... • I think Fitmit had some, have a look on there (theyre Australian as well)
    • Hah, fair enough! But if you learn with this one you can drive any other OEM manual. No modern luxury features like auto rev-matching or hillstart assist to give you a false sense of confidence. And a heavy car with not that much torque so it stalls easily.
    • Actually, I'd say all three are the automatic option. Just the different trim levels. The manual would be RSFS, no?
