Once the car is in your name, you can file for a refund on the remaining interstate registration. If it's NSW rego just go into the RTA in Queanbeyan, but if it's further than that then you're best off mailing a letter requesting the registration be canceled and the remaining rego refunded to you. You have to provide receipts for the surrender of the plates, which you should have got from the shopfront when you swapped rego over.

In my case when my car was stolen and written off, it still wasn't in my name yet, so the only way to get the remaining 8 months of rego refunded was for the previous owner to do it. It was only going to be like $150 anyway, so I really couldn't be stuffed driving to Goulburn to get him to do it (and of course splitting it for his troubles)

Hope that helped a little

i saved it onto my computer. you will need to send the reciept for the plates, along with this from, that you will get after transfering the rego to ACT. i got $116.xx back for just under 3 months of rego.

I'd just use the interstate rego and change over to ACT rego around a month before it runs out.

You generally get no-where near the amount back that rego costs and there is no late change of ownership fee for an interstate rego car being changed to ACT
