Hey guys,

The car in question is a 4 stud S13 but trying to get good info out of Nissan Silvia is too much of a f#$k around, I know that the people on here are more informed, easier to deal with and I'm still a skyline man at heart :)

I've got S15 calipers up front which BARELY clear the current rims which came on the car and are some cheap nasty 17x7" 5 spoke things with a +40 offset.

Now if my understanding of this whole setup is right then a I could go +30 or +35 on the next set of rims and that would give me some more caliper clearance (I think rim "disc" is also an issue?)

I'll be running up to -3/-4 degrees camber on the fronts and not more than say around -2 on the rears.

Currently the tyres are craptastic 215 fang wung chung no name things but I'll be grabbing some 235 wide advan semis before DECA in August.

I'm hoping to not need to roll the guard either so rim width could be an issue when combined with camber.

Help me get my head around it and buy the right rims.

Cheers

:):ninja: :ninja: :ninja:

the reason why u might not being getting a decent response is ur simply not giving enough info.

a few things:

caliper clearance isnt determined by offset, it's determined by disk type, a completely different measurement

you havnt specified wheel specs besides offset

ur not gonna get much under without rolling the guards

what height will the car be running?

:D :D :)

Hey Niss, what I meant by that is that I wasn't going to even bother asking at NS because it's generally a waste of time. I'd have gotten your first line from 6 different people but nothing saying what extra info I needed then 4 people telling me that I should just go 5 stud conversion lol

Now, I think I covered wheel specs with the exception of disk type, I gave rim width, diameter and offset so that's a start lol

Is this disk type measurement listed on the back of the rim and if so what form does it come in and I'll grab it off the car. (If I remember it was something like O, R, and A) Thoguh I can't remember which letter was what clearance etc.

I was under the impression I'd seen a few Sil's running 8 and 9" rims without guard rolling but it seems to be a case by case basis, no doubt affected by disc type which no-one talks about.

I'll try and find out current disc type and will measure front and rear ride height and go from there.

Cheers

haha true, ns will just tell u to stretch a tyre up against the guard, and when u say u dont want to they'll call u a pussy lol

when u say u covered the diametre and width, are u talking about the 17x7's? i thought they were ur old rims and u were looking for something new completely different?

maybe im still missing something lol

as far as width, u can go a 8" and 9" fairly easy on the S13, but it depends on what tyres u wanna go. rear u can get away with something like a 17x9 +38 with a 245 or 255 depending on camber and suspension. front is a little bit more difficult as there's clearance issues with coilovers, and each coilover is different to how much clearance there is. how much clearance is there now with the 17x7 +40's? i can go from there as to reccomending an offset for the fronts.

and with the disk type, yep ur on the right track, it's not an easy spec to get, but u need to to be certain about clearance.

Yep you're right I did give old details, woops...

I'm happy with whatever rim width will be enough for the 235 semis i'll be getting.

I'll take a measurement on the car as to how much clearance there is between the rim and the coilover.

I'll see if I can get a disk measurement on the rims that are on it but I'd hazard a guess and say whatever is the worst one to have as these are very cheap nasty rims with crap offsets.

I'll get back to ya with some more info.

235 all round?

Yep, didn't get a chance to grab measurements last night. Will have a look on the weekend as I'm in the process of moving.

Awesome :) Just need to know caliper clearance now.

if you are going with 235 semis all round then it's worth getting the same width rim all round for rotation, preferably an 8.5 or 9 inch width.

The previous owner of my s13 ran 235's all round on 17x8.5 +30's with stock guards. The car sits at stock height.

I currently run 235/45 r888's on 17x9+25's all round. The rear was fine (but i gave them a lip anyway) the front needed a bit of guard work initially but once i added in more front camber i reckon it would be a pretty close thing with stock guards.

4 stud makes it hard. You can pretty much grab any 30 odd offset in a 5 stud jap rim and it will clear the calipers.

In the pic the fronts have s14 lower control arms and i've added a 5mm spacer on the front wheels to give more clearance to the strut for when the tyre flexes. So the front is effectively a 17x9 +20. The guards are pulled out as far as i could get them with a roller.

  • 2 weeks later...

I'm looking at some Enkei's which are 17x8 with a +34 offset. Now an offset calculator tells me i will have 7mm less clearance to the strut and that the rim edge will extend a further 19mm that 'should' be ok.

What I can't get from the seller is disk type so i'm unsure if they will clear the calipers and i can't really drive the silvia 3hrs each way to test fit them.

Also, wider tyres will also mean less clearance from rim/tyre edge to strut body and LCA's, which i think i have already rubber a few times but only at the drifts.

Thoughts?

17x8 +34 Enkei's are made to clear brakes on cars like Silvias. Unfortunately you can't measure the "x-factor" of a wheel (the clearance between the spokes and brakes) but you should be ok.

What type of Enkei's are they? Dished or no dish? Seems like a good size, with worst case being a small slip on spacer but you should be fine as the stock calipers are quite a bit thinner than S14/15 calipers from memory.

I'm 3hrs away and while the Sil is road reg'd it's not the best car to be doing trips to melb in.

I was planning on rolling down in the BA and picking them up.

I don't mind having to lip the guards ever so slightly but I'm more interested in caliper clearance and the possible contact with the LCA as I already have some marks on mine with the current rim/tyre combo but that was from the drifts which these rims would not be doing (as they will have my semi's on them)

LCA clearance? :S

get the guy to measure the caliper clearance, basically u put a solid flat object or soemthing against the mounting surface, then measure the distance to the spokes.

however going by the pics id say they have plenty of clearance.

Yeah I had the picture of what I had seen with rub marks on it wrong in my head.

I've attached a pic which shows the inner guard/chassis rail is what got rubbed, I have that on both sides.

Also, my ride height is about 350mm rear and 345mm front (measured from rim centre to guard lip)

My clearance from the tyre to the shock is roughly 70-55mm (hard to see without getting right in there and I'm already dressed for work)

    • Cheers. Skyline is back on the menu, can’t get rid of it. It’s like a child you don’t want, or herpes
    • I got back to Japan in January and was keen to get back on track as quickly as possible. Europe is god-awful for track accessibility (by comparison), so I picked up a first-gen GT86 in December just to have something I could jump into right away. The Skyline came over in a container this time and landed in early January. It was a bit battered after Europe, though—I refused to do anything beyond essential upkeep while it was over there. The clutch master cylinder gave out, and so did the power steering. I didn’t even bother changing the oil; it was the same stuff that went in just before I left Japan the first time. Naughty. Power steering parts would’ve cost double with shipping and taxes, so knowing I’d be heading back to Japan, I just postponed it and powered through the arm workout. It took a solid three months to get the car back on the road. Registration was a nightmare this time around. There were a bunch of BS fees to navigate, and sourcing parts was a headache. I needed stock seats for shaken, mistakenly blew 34k JPY on some ENR34 seats—which, of course, didn’t fit—then ended up having the car’s technical sheet amended to register it as a two-seater with the Brides. Then there’s the GT86. Amazing car. Does everything I want it to do. Parts are cheap, easy to find, and I don’t care what anyone says—it’s super rewarding to drive. I’ve done a few basic mods: diff ratio, coilovers, discs, pads, seat, etc. It already had a new exhaust manifold and the 180kph limiter removed, so I assume it’s running some kind of map. I’ve just been thrashing it at the track non-stop—mostly Fuji Speedway now, since I need something with higher speed after all that autobahn time. The wheels on the R34 always pissed me off—too big, and it was a nightmare getting tires to fit properly under the arches. So I threw in the towel and bought something that fits better. Looks way cleaner too (at least to me)—less hotboy, less attention-seeking. Still an R34, though. Now for future plans. There are a few things still outstanding with the car. First up, the rear subframe needs an overhaul—that’s priority one. Next, I need to figure out an engine rebuild plan. No timeline yet, but I want to keep it economical—not cutting corners, just not throwing tens of thousands at a mechanic I can barely communicate with. And finally, paint. Plus a bit of tidying up here and there.
    • Nope, needed to clearance under the bar a little with a heat gun, a 1/2" extension as the "clearancer", and big hammer, I was aware of this from the onset, they fit a 2.0 with this intake no problems, but, the 2.5 is around 15mm taller than a 2.0, so "clearancing" was required  It "just" touched when test fitting, now, I have about 10mm of clearance  You cannot see where it was done, and so far, there's no contact when giving it the beans Happy days
    • It's been a while since I've updated this thread. The last year (and some) has been very hectic. In the second-half of 2024 I took the R34 on a trip through Germany, Italy, France and Switzerland - it was f*cking great. I got a little annoyed with the attention the car was getting around Europe and really didn't drive it that much. I could barely work on the car since I was living in an inner-city apartment (with underground parking). During the trip, the car lost power steering in France - split hose - and I ended up driving around 4,000kms with no power steering.  There were a few Nurburgring trips here and there, but in total the R34 amassed just shy of 7,000kms on European roads. Long story short, I broke up with the reason I was transferred to Europe for and requested to be moved back to Japan. The E90, loved it. It was a sunk cost of around EUR 10,000 and I sold it to a friend for EUR 1,500 just to get rid of it quickly. Trust me, moving countries f*cking sucks and I could not be bothered to be as methodical as I was the first time around.
