Hey guys

Just a quick question here. I got a new 3" turbo back exhaust installed, but like most people I have read on the forum, workshop didn't put the stock turbo heat shield back on when they installed the the exhaust. After some searching, most people are saying that the stock heat shield will fit regardless of what front/dump pipe is installed. So I'm going back there on saturday & see if they still got my heat shield along with my old exhaust bits & pieces, & I'll try & see if the heat shield will fit back on.

But just in case it doesn't or they have binned it, will some thing like this fit the stock turbo? If it doesn't what kind of turbo blanket should I be looking at?

I'm abit concerned for the plastic electrical bits & wires near the turbo, they get very hot after diriving the car for a while without any form of heat insulation around the turbo, don't want them to melt & cause a short or fire.

I have included a picture of the turbo & the pipe.

On a side note, why does my turbo look like a rusted bucket of crap, compared to the other parts of the engine?

While I was searching on the topic I came across another member's engine bay & his turbo is nice & shiny

Heat shield keeps the radiant heat from the surrounding and lets the heat get off the housing somewhat.

Now a turbo beanie is going to keep the heat in much more...

This brings up and interesting question of... will this aid in the death of the factory turbo?

IMO go the heat shield.

The Shield will definately fit so put that back on.

I read that turbo beanies on street cars arent ideal and can be a fire risk too.

I gave the stock heat shields a squirt with some flame proom black paint. Look great.

I did the Actuator too ha.

Thanks guys, I'm going back to the shop tommorrow with my dad's ute to pick up my old exhuast & I'm gonna ask them for my heat shield back too, hopefully they still got it.

Quick update

I went to the shop today to get my old exhuast back from them & I got my heat shield back as well.

I have now put it on, looks all good now, no more rust bucket turbo in sight :D

On a related topic, should I heat wrap the dump pipe as well? Currently I can't be f*cked doing it (too lazy , seeing how theres no plastic or electircal cables near by that are in danger of melting. I read from here that is done with heat wraps tape thingys, but they tend to smell alot initially... & some one even mentioned white smoke coming from the heat wraps.

Which brings to my last thing that I would like to get some extra info on... currently my exhuast smells alot (its not petrol smell, I'm very familar with that smell, since I had a fuel line bursted b4 & the car pissed fuel all over the drive way... got a whole does of petorl smell back then :) ), I read from an old thread that this is caused by a layer of oil thats on the new exhuast & that it will burn initially until its all gone. Is that correct?

Seems like the smell has gone down somewhat compared to when I 1st got the car, which is a good sign I guess.

Thanks for all the help so far.

Is the exhaust stainless or mild steel?

If its steel, sometimes they paint them with heat paint and that smells a bit for a few days till it cures with the heat.

And sometimes stainless does have a random oil on it and it smokes a bit the 1st few times too. Youl be all good!

    • The issue now is the 'fuel cut' while driving, and when it happend, it does not stall. This, I did not test the fuel pressure while driving as I cannot with a fuel pressure gauge. I do have Nistune logs, yes. I have also replaced the MAF Sensor.   Also related to the FPG Fuel Hanger – I just realized that I need a Deutsch Crimp Tool to crimp some cables for the FPG Fuel Hanger. Need to purchase additional cables as the kit only included 2, which are for the float. FPG has not responded to my emails so far since purchasing. I thought about taking it to someone and having it done professionally, but I am reluctant since everyone I took it to messed up in some way.
    • There's a good German place in Brisbane if youre up for the drive 😛
    • The German place in Cabramatta was rock solid, fresh pretzel cooked to order back then. Then it went all quiet, after all the poker machines were removed, then I believe it closed for good. I did drive past the other week and noticed outdoor lighting a big screen, but no idea what is there now.
    • Yeah I suspect even if you hold airmass per cycle/cylinder constant if you get too far away from stock you're still going to have problems running the factory tune within the bounds of the factory load scale. Cams, different displacement/rod ratio, etc. I'm just lucky that the GTIII-SS with wastegate boost + CA compliance cats is pretty much equivalent to stock turbos. When I have actual space I can finally get it tuned and modify the fuel system for flex fuel to 100% handle any detonation concerns when cranking the boost to whatever those dinky turbos can put out.
    • I would say no, why, because my daughter, who also lives in Goulburn, hasn't recommended us going there Pity, as we miss all the German joints around in Sydney, actually, the restaurants are the only thing I really miss about Sydney, and a special mention to Ishibanboshi at Bondi Junction, their Kara-age Don is heart cloggingly deliciousness (always added a special boiled egg...or 2) 😋
