Hi all

there is something wrong with the r33.

Firstly after putting in a 2nd hand replacement turbo, i decided to take the car for a spin ... soon afterwards there was this weird sound, and there after accerlatation was poor and there was absolutely no boost.

The replacement turbo had done around 58000 kms.

There's this sound from the air filter, which may be coming from the turbo, it sounds like a pinging sound, or maybe the blade is hitting the wheel of the turbo.

Can u guys give me some suggestions to why im having no boost at all?

I checked the intercooler pipes to see if anything is loose, all seems fine.

PLEASE help, want to get back on the road...

cheers

Sounds like someone sold you a dud turbo, i'd be taking it off if its making bad noises.

Yep, thats what it sound's like.

Pull off the intake and exhaust pipes and check that the turbo spins and doesn't scrape anthing or move on the shaft too much.

Also check that you still have an exhaust wheel. If it's still got an exhaust wheel then read on.

Did the turbo come with any kind of warranty? Was it from a shop? If not then do the following. It'll cost you a little bit of money but you will get a full refund on the turb.

Take it off the car and take it to a turbo specialist, say you've just bought it and want it checked out before you put it on your car. It'll cost you some money but at the end of the day you'll get a bit of paper that says either "turbo good" or "turbo ****ed". Take that back to the bloke who sold it to you and and tell him to ram his dud turbo up his arse.

I've been caught out before on my old rx7. Good bearing, dud oil seals. It was worse than the one i took off. Crack the shits and get a refund. Back yourself if they say it has no warranty. They have to give your money back if its checked out by a professional.

check that your wastegate actuator arm is still connected and has not come loose. This happened to a mate of mine. He had no boost and a noise from the actuator arm rattling around. Should take no time at all to fix if thats the problem.

Thanks for all the replys.

BHdave - Yea the turbo was bought privately and with no formal warranty. I just taken the car to the mechanics where they found that it is the turbo and something to do with the wastegate being closed.

I will try to get my money back fromt he guy i bought the turbo off. If not maybe hi-flo the turbo.

sinisteR32 - yea, definately will check if anything is in the exhaust once i get back to the mechanic

i ll keep you updated

Cheers

    • That's awesome. Fully serviced/full log book history for one of those cars is super rare from what I know. With JDM's like Skyline's, Supras, are quite hard to find one with full log book history. S15's seem to be somewhat of an exception, at least the spec s australian delivered models.
    • Hey all, It's been a bit since I have been able to update.  I pulled the fuel pump, first off it was a "universal" pump and the strainer was very clogged, and it was folded over on itself.  I replaced the fuel pump and all is well....  No more stalling.
    • That's convinced me I'll bump up the G30-660 to 770   Any idea if the difference in boost pressure? Cheers

    • Hey guys so turns out this project is going to be much bigger than I thought haha but I've done some my homework and have done a few panels on my car, but one part I can just not visualise is this. If I do a spot repair and I put filler in a dent for example and sand outside of the repair with 320 grit lets say so the primer can stick as I will only put primer on that repair and the surrounding area and then repaint the whole panel. Don't I need to make sure that I don't put primer on the old clear coat? I keep seeing YouTube videos where people have new paint and primer land on the old clearcoat that isn't even dulled down, it's still shiny. I thought putting paint on clearcoat or primer on clearcoat is a bad idea because it won't stick. So in this scenario it's a bit different to mine but imagine someone doing a spot repair and only painting that small section of repair but the new paint is landing on the old clearcoat. What am I missing?
