hi

i own a 1996 nissan skyline r33 gts-t and i was just wondering how much power can a stock turbo handle?

what mods can i get to make my skyline fast without blowing up the turbo?

i was planin to get a front mount intercooler and a aftermarket computer would the stock turbo handle that?

around 200 - 220kws is all it will take, and not for long!

Mine is at 203kws running at 15 pound right now, I've already got a new turbo though so I don't care if it blows.

It could live on 180kws for a long time, I wouldn't put it past 10psi if you want it to last.

power figures are all depending on other mods as well...

I thought that aswell.... until i saw a bloke have to rebuild his motor because it ingested the busted turbine when it finally blew..

I'll bet you a steak sandwich it wasn't the turbine. Engines don't breath in reverse and any chunk large enough to go back through the manifold after the explosion is not going to have a shit show of getting between the piston and bore

The highest I've seen is 223rwkws and it lasted about 20mins. Mine had 215rwkws on Dr.drift remap using a RB25Neo turbo and it was missing half of the turbine fins when I took it out 3 weeks later.

adrian has made around 270rwkw on the standard turbo

this was with NOS. so i think the question the original poster has, is what boost pressure kills the std turbo

its around 12psi. 12psi is the ok / risk level. it may work fine for years or it may shit a bearing in 20 minutes

ive had mine at 0.85kgcm2 for about 5 years now, got car at 58k and its now got 215k on the clock and still std turbo at 0.85kgcm2

so its luck of the draw

power doesnt kill the turbocharger, excessive heat, shaft speed (from running mega boost) and poor tune (excessive egt's) are what kill the turbocharger

Is that a good idea? What if it fails catastrophically and bits get sucked into the engine?

Edit: Opps I see that was partially answered but still bits of turbine blades all through the 'zaust/cat can't be good, plus also if the compressor side fails couldn't you at least get a load of oil fouling up intake etc

i got my r33 series 2 running on 12psi...175kw atw..but only drove it for about 4 hours on 12psi till my coilpack failed...but im looking at putting a remaped ecu so il be getting around 200kw on my stock turbo, and my tuner said it will be ok.

    • @Supernanoyour car has ended up in my hands and I was wondering if there has been any work done to the motor?
    • Sigh... yeah OEM mount rear battery, very R33, very demure, very mindful.
    • Would need a substantial current draw in the car to make a bunch of sparks. Obvs to now test resistance to ground of the car's B+ lead. If there's a short there, you'll see it. Only likely place for that, as you suspect is alternator. But there is also the possibility that rats have had a chew on some insulation. Shitbox has the battery in the boot, yeah? Plenty of cable to attack.
    • Oh, I thought of that too... I disconnected the battery and hooked up the leads direct to the car without the battery in place. Sparks... I suspect the following: Alternator has decided to kill itself Starter has decided to kill itself I'll recharge the battery, then unplug both, and go from there. The above might take 6 months - however I did buy a Victron 15 AMP trickle charger, apparently it's better than CTEK?
