Guys

looking for bit of advice as to which turbo to run as this question has been asked so many times its not funny so perhaps im better of stating what i hav so far and looking for opionions as for rwkw hav no fixed power goals just cum what may ok parts hav so far

460cc high flowed injectors

gtr nismo fuel regulator

gtr fuel pump

3' exhaust

fmic 620x200x70

hks panel filter with cold air induction

electronic boost controller

ported and polished head

hks cam gears

maybe set of cams not sure yet

remote oil filter

and im geting the wolf 3d v4 ecu

just trying to find out if it does away with geting the 300zx afm

just not sure of which turbo to put on it been thing bout the hks either gt 25/30/35 or the 40

so lets c some opinions on this looking for some good usefull information

thanks Peter

cars prob just gonna b used for street maybe a drag or 2 from time to time , as for hp not after anyfixed amount just wanna c what i can get out of it for whats being done to it hav a spare engine that i might try building up over time but for the moment i'll just play with the one i hav in the car and c what power i can get out of it . People will hav differing opinions on what it will get and what it wont and what turbo to run for what hp as we all know bigger turbo bigger power more lag well myself i dont know a great deal bout turbo engines being into bike and v8 most of my life so now im gonna learn bout turbos what better way than to listen to people in the know

Well, looking at what you have done mod wise, probably not too hard to come up with a solution. Just be aware that there are many different solutions, and its not as cut and dried as you may think.

there are volumes on here already about turbo selection, what to expect etc, also the limitations of different mods.

Basically, you are only running a GTR pump - which will limit you to around 250rwkw. That is also pleny to destroy an RB20 gearbox.

Do a search and look at something along the lines of HKS 2530, or even a high flow RB25 unit.

Either of these will deliver 230rwkw, and you will probably find your gearbox is at its limits.

Alot of your mods are a bit over the top for that sort of power too.

Seriously, have a look around the forum, use the search tool, there is heaps of info on RB20s, turbos, and other mods as well as when you need to look at doing them.

Basically you want the smallest turbo that will give you the power figures you want unless you want major lag.

BTW you have a lot of mods considering you have a stock turbo.

I'd set an upper limit of 250rwkw with the standard bottom end so would be looking at the 2530 or 2535, which have both made this figure (though the 2530 is really pushing it at these power levels)

I currently have a stage 2 GCG highflow on a virtually stock rb20 and it's just way too laggy atm. Potential 270-80 rwkw supposedly once it's all tuned. ATM it starts to get interesting at about 4200rpm

I'd set an upper limit of 250rwkw with the standard bottom end so would be looking at the 2530 or 2535, which have both made this figure (though the 2530 is really pushing it at these power levels)

I havent seen all that many modded RB20 powered cars, but are you sure that these power figures are attainable from a std RB20 with even a 2540? (I mean actually know of a car with this setup and that hp?)

JMS Onevia made over 250rwkw with a TD06 and there was also a budget build article in Zoom (I think) that was making 250rwkw with a 2530.

I am a bit doubtful about the 2530 making this kind of power (some magazine power figures seem a little inflated to me ) but if the engine is sound then it should have few problems making this type of power.

Then the question is how long will it hold together. Not all that long is my guess. Both of the above cars have been through atleast one engine.

edit: I'll know for sure in about 3 months when i have a go with tuning mine (once the fuel is sorted) just to see whats possible. Then turn it back to about 220 or so i guess for reliability as the car is a daily driver

I hear what you are saying about some dyno figures. It means more to me to be told originally had X_rwkws, now has Y_rwkws, so read as a percentage increase.

I have a TD06 but using a smaller exhaust housing then the JMS Onevia, but with the proper manifold and wastegate...so im hoping for around 230rwkws, fingers crossed that can be attained at around 1-1.2bar (currently tooting around at 0.65bar)

If you are thinking of the white R31 Wagon in Zoom, some earlier issues on this car said HKS2540, some later ones say 2530??? Still even if the figure is a few kws high, who cares, i have been for a ride in an R33 with a 2530, and it was plenty quick for me, actually i wish i owned it.

Ah, i get you now.

By having a base line figure for the stock engine you can then look at the percentage increase for a given mod, rather than some magical rwkw number and eliminate any dyno fudging.

Pretty certain it was a 2530 on the skyline based on how the compressor cover looked. I've seen a few like this but never a 2540 with that cover.

R33 with 2530 would be making boost at idle! And making a fair bit of power to boot.

My problem with inflated dyno figure in magazines is they have no need to inflate them. Give people a genuine figure that is realistic and they can aim for it if they want. The S13 drift silvia figures are out of this world and from everything i've seen and read (even in the same magazine) are unatinable with the stock turbo. If you or I tried for these numbers we'd blow something up. Then people start quoting them, as i have done, and then people start to beleive that this turbo makes this power and heads off to buy one and are disapointed with the end result.

p.s. I think we hijacked the thread, sorry guys.

    • Put a fuel pressure gauge on it. Replace the turbos. Probably completely separate issues.
    • What copper washer do you guys use on the bleeder bolts? The existing one I have I had no idea where to find it in a local store, I did buy some online but that are only 1mm thick whereas my old one is 2mm+ thick and when I put the new washer out and squeeze the top radiator hose I can hear a bit of air but not with the old one. Does this matter? The new one doesn't leak, but the inner diameter is a bit loose whereas the old one threads on the bolt.
    • Howdy all, after being out a few weeks ago on a spirited drive in my GTR I have 2 issues that oddly have appeared at the same time. Whilst accelerating quickly through the gears all of a sudden i’ve lost power at the top of third gear (below redline around 6000rpm) for no obvious reason.    From that point onwards the car has been running rich on idle, won’t really rev under load without a ton of black smoke and the odd backfire, and dying as a pull up to a set of lights unless I keep the revs up around 1500rpm. In addition when shutting down the car that same night (I was 10 minutes from home) I noticed one of the turbos was significantly noisy on wind down when shutting off the engine. After letting the car cool down overnight it starts up fine, although once it gets to temp the revs start to creep up and down, the exhaust is darker than it should be and it also sounds like it’s running rich (fat note) I’ve put a new set of plugs in it - no change, the old plugs all seemed OK with two of them being somewhat richer/fueled up than the other 3 with 1 being borderline. I’ve smoked tested the intake system via the front of the Turbos, found a split vacuum hose going to the factory boost gauge sender, which I have since replaced.  Also found another leak on the gasket coming off the rear turbo outlet, have also replaced this. After fixing both of these leaks - still have the running rich issue. I’ve also tried another pair of AFM’s - no change here After pulling off the front turbo intake pipes, there is obvious shaft play in the front turbo, which now hisses loudly on light revvs although I can’t see why this would make the car run funny even under idle. I’m curious to know why it’s running rich before I potentially replace/rebuild turbos. The car is completely stock <50,000kms  other than an exhaust. Oil and coolant are all clear. I haven’t bothered with coil packs as it looks like they won’t be the issue due to condition of the plugs. Any help appreciated as I cry myself to sleep!
    • No probs at all. I used to love trying to dig up obscure info for those in need where possible going back 20+ years on SAU.  I did have another look and couldn't come up with any closer match. I'm leaning towards those skirts in your first pic are custom fitments, cut down/extended or from another car entirely and modded to fit an R34 sedan. I would've thought someone in Japan had them and taken a photo at some stage over the last 2 decades but there's nothing. Someone out there must know surely.
