Anatomy Of An Rb20det-r

Recommended Posts

I wanted to know what the difference was between an RB20DET-R, and a normal road-going RB20DET. INTERNALLY.

the answer i've been given is 'nothing'. all you're saying is that the race and the street version are different - not how.

*gives up*

Think if it as 3 different engines.

Regular Rb20det, sold in regular r31's:

regular stuff

Rb20det-R: sold in a few gts-r's that nissan sold so they could race them:

slightly more than regular stuff, but nothing crazy, someone else can tell you the specifics, because i don't know

Rb20det-r, "race spec": used in the r31's that were raced:

Heaps of insane stuff to make them last longer, put out more power, etc. Again, ask an expert.

Basically, the det-r sold to the public is a step up from a det, but not what they used in the racecars.

(well, i hope i got that right, i'd look silly if i didn't)

thanks eskydude. not that i don't trust you, being a stranger on the internet, but could you confirm that?

i don't know much about nissan motorsport history - interests me quite severely. thanks though.

thank you also pete. shedding some light on topic.

so much uncertainty for something so pointless. remember that these cars were raced in japan aswell...

exact quote from the owner of the aforementioned car, if this doesnt help you, nothing can......

Motor basics below.....the rest of the driveline also plays a big part in the performance of the car.....hope this helps.

R31 GTS-r intercooler(sort of....there a GMS story behind it)

8:1 compression for the high comp motor. 7:1 compression for the low comp motor

21PSI on the high comp. 23PSI on the low comp

Nissan Motorsport Block

Custom grind cams(have fun finding blanks)

JE pistons

Nismo Rods

Standard Crank

Garret 3/4 turbo(non BB)

Titanium Exhaust Valves

Stainless Inlet Valves

GMS Sump

Electromotive ECU(Go Motec.....we have to run the original ECU)

PWR Radiator

lol @ RB20DET-R's having a Nismo block with Nismo Rods and American pistsons...

Does this honestly look like a car with a forged motor???

112_0606_16z%20nissan_GTR_concept%201987_nissan_GTS_R_HR31.jpg

The RB20DET-R made less power than the silver top for gods sake. There is nothing special internally about it other than bolt on goodness to pass homologation requirements.

And then even after that all the parts were changed anyhow as is what happened back in the GrpA days.

If there were some mystically awesome internals the internet would be littered with information, however people that have pulled down original RB20DET-R's have never noted anything out of the ordinary down.

I think the only thing was the butterflies in the plenum like a NICS motor (even though it was ECCS). Which is nothing to get excited about and i can promise you would not have been in the race-spec motors.

That is the RACE SPEC not the normal RB20DET-R you would buy from a wrecker (if you could find one).

Dorigecko has clearly become confused, so im making nice and clear - that above specs ARE NOT THE FACTORY ONES.

the quote im giving is from the ex-skaife car.... not a road going version.

EDIT: which im fully aware of.... it would seem to me that after he saw the video he wanted to know the specs on THAT motor, not the road going version...

nismoid, tone down the arrogance dude. it's discussion time, not 'i'm right you're wrong shutup' time. chill the f**k out.

so, i've gathered now -

RB20DET-R was in race-spec vehicles, with race-spec external modifications.

800 units were made, some of which used and built as group A race engines here in oz, some used in japan for race, rest kept as standard red-top eccs in GTS-Rs. yeah?

Skaife's was f**king boss.

The hard-revving sound isn't actually hard revving.

actually.... you being ignorant to the fact that the acronym JDM has been colloquially applied to a particular form of styling is retarded

No, I wnat that sound, but I want to keep my JDM interior.

OK no shit, I am interested in getting a hypo 20, Jason is interested about 100x more and has me at gunpoint on the matter, BUT I want to keep my true JDM import semi driveable for street, ie, include interior and shit.

    • Your ECU's engine protection should pick this up easily.  Just recently my ECU alerted me to lower then usual fuel pressure caused by a failing car battery. I'd be absolutely blown away if the ECU couldn't tell that you only had half the pumps you should have lol.
    • so i was having issues with blow by with the new hypertune covers especially compared to the rb26 covers with the baffles due to the hypertune covers having no internal baffling, thankfully PRP came out with a nice smooth cam cover with extensive internal baffling which would hopefully improve the blow by issues i was having at the track so another colour change was in order  i had found a 2nd hand titanium exhaust of an r33 on marketplace so i had purchased this but for some reason it just didn't seem to work out on the car so it was time to brainstorm what i wanted to do, someone jokingly suggested a side pipe to me and after watching some skyline/rb side pipe videos Aswell as seeing/hearing Laine Brandis's 32 in Perth and WTAC it was rather stupidly decided i wanted a side pipe, we weighed up how we wanted it to look being to stick out past the body or a twin pipe but c'mon that was just silly i wanted a tame looking side pipe ahahah so after some awesome welding and not much in the way of keeping the noise down its fair to say its loud and i love it not sure my neighbours do but hey track car right?   had the driveshaft made up deciding to go with a 2 piece as i had heard of people having issues with a single piece, made to "suit 1000hp" it was nice and chunky and certainly wont be testing the strength of it. the it was time for the really important jobs like relocating the kill switch and installing the emtron keypad along the the ed7 dash with the mako motorsports mount.   after checking the bank account i now regrettably decided to try and utilise the stock harness for the emtron and make a seperate harness for the sensors much to the sparkies displeasure but he got there and it was time for the first start, with so much changed and so much done by myself we were all abit nervous but when it fired up i had a huge smile on my face and all felt worth it 20231002_165615.mp4
    • The only logic and I know this is flawed to my staged pumps is the chance of detecting a pump failure. With both running all the time if one dies you won't know. With one primary if that dies you know, the second yes will be a mystery but at least you have a 50% chance ? Either way though safeties are super important in dual setups.  I've wondered about putting an Amp meter on as extra safety but then you just should buy a PDM
    • Valid point. That would be true for R34 also. I should have known that because the 2nd small box I put in my car was an R33 one, and I had to swap my cable drive in for the sender!!
