Hey guys my name is Michael and i bought a 1996 R33 GTS-T yesterday and love the car. My only problem is i need new rear shocks for rego and the cheapest i have found are $700 a pair but i have already blown my budget on the car. So can anyone reccomend where i can get some fairly quick and cheaper then that?

My other question was what oil should i be using the engine is stock at the moment and where can i find air, fuel and oil filters for the car? I went down to Super Cheap but the car is not listed for these parts anywhere.

Any help or advise would be appreciated cheers Michael

Hey mate another Michael ,

If you need a service done let me know and I can do one for you ...

I charge $90 per hour + parts

oil filter part number off the top of my head is Z145A

And I am pretty sure that I can get rear shocks cheaper than $700 for a pair

what brand were you quoted 700 for ?

Welcome mate,

Nearly everyone will recommend Motul 4100 Turbolight oil for your motor and it can be found at Repco and Autobahn. Most places wont have a parts list for our cars, but if you can find the part numbers then they'll most likely have them or be able to get them in for you. try using the SEARCH TOPIC in various threads if your looking for this information as it had been talked about so many millions of times that it should be easy to find. servicing your skyline is so simple that a baby could do it blind folded! if you need some help just ask and most of the guys on here will be happy to help guide you through it. as for the shocks, $700 a pair is a little steep. there are only 2 places in canberra to go to for suspension and that is Inline in Qbn or Capital Steering and Suspension in Fysh. i think i got quoted about $600 a pair for Bilstein's about 4 or 5 years ago....

hope this helps...

Welcome to the forum Michael

Thats way to expensive for shocks lol you should be paying a round 500 ish give or take alittle..

As for serviceing yeah do it yourself and learn about the car just dont do what i did and thats when you flush the rad (if you do flush the rad) dont for what ever reason undo the nut on right hand siode of rad to drain just take the hose out!!

Otherwise you will be like me needing a new rad as they dont like to go back into the plastic once took out!!

Oil use Motul 4100 :)

If you don't necessarily want brand new, I have a full set of used stock springs and shocks off a 96 R33 S2 that should get you through rego.

Since you're new here, and had good enough taste to buy a Skyline, you can have them cheap :) .

Oh, and you'll find the filters listed in the Ryco catalogue, but the imports are normally in a different section to the domestic models.

Or try www.rycofilters.com.au.

From memory - oil is Z145A, air is A360.

Fuel filter could be one of about three different models, best to take the old one in with you and just compare it.

Hey mate definetely interested in those shocks it would help me out o lot. Are they off a GTS-T or a GTR because i thought there was a difference??

Also i cant PM yet so if you PM me your number i will give you a call and come and pick them up how much yo want for them??

i got stock rear R34 25GT if its the same one as yours. i need someone to clarify this.

u can just borrow it from me and return it after u pass ur rego.

nb: im not a mechanic, but i changed my springs with coilover by myself. sooo, pretty much i can help you with the main idea.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well i put the new shocks in (thanks JD R33) and got new rear tyres, had rego check this morning and failed on front tyres which i thought were fine but inside edge was stuffed (just), after market peddles now i gotta try and find some original rubber things for the originals and it appears someone did a dodgy fix up job on one of the pipes on the exhaust so will prob need a new bit of pipe there. Damn car is costing more money then expected at a bad time of year. Anyone know where i could get the rubber things for the peddles cheers

    • Just trying to get my head around this. At 5psi of boost, you turn on your wmi pump, and then you're using a 3000cc injector, to allow flow upto the actual engine, where you have your 6x200cc injectors and a 500cc injector. If the above is correct, what advantage are you obtaining by having the 3000cc injector blocking flow, is this just incase a line breaks between that injector and the motor you can stop flow immediately? Or are the 6x200cc and 500cc less injectors and just spray nozzle?
    • Welcome! New member myself, but I had an R33 back in 2002. Best advice I could give, based on my experience: if you're running the factory turbo, be very conservative with boost. I made the mistake of just fiddling around with the boost controller and cranking the boost for fun, and the end result was my intake pipes popping off frequently from the constant deluge of oil that was being blown into the recirc by the stressed-out turbo, which itself was siphoning oil from the engine and farting it out both sides of its centre bearing (or something to that effect). If I could do it all again, I would have gotten a new turbo and had a tune dialled in professionally and then just left it alone! Funny you mention the metal shavings in the gearbox, as I had the same thing - the probe plug (magnetic drain plug, essentially) would come out caked with shavings. At least it was doing its job. Not sure if that's just sacrificial wear and part of the deal, or if my gearbox was shagged, but I wasn't abusing it. Enjoy the R33 - they're a dying breed, and if they weren't $35k+ on CarSales in Queensland, I might have picked up one of those again, instead of the 370GT I own now (though I'm loving the 370GT, that big 3.7L V6 just hits different).
    • Howdy folks. I owned an R33 back in 2002, which was thoroughly beyond my capacity (financially speaking) to maintain/insure, so we parted ways in 2004. Fast forward 21 years (to literally yesterday, in fact) and I'm now the proud owner of a 2007 V36 370GT. I'm happily surprised by how much power the VQ37VHR makes, compared to the RB25DET, considering the latter is turbocharged. I had planned to add a turbo at some point but I'm on the fence about whether I'll even need it (though I do love the sudden onset of extra torque). Any other 370GT owners around the traps, I'd love to hear about your experiences with this car (good and bad).
    • Perhaps the answer is... more jacks!* *proper jacks must be used.
    • I NEVER think about using a scissor jack unless there is absolutely no other alternative. f**king things are dangerous, annoying and stupid.
