I have been looking at front mount intakes in preparation for the upgrades needed to go with the larger turbo in the spring season (USA)..I have found them from 250 US up to like 2500 us..Greddy is around 750-800 bunch of after market intakes on ebay but they claim (needs minor modifications etc) ..just want some opinions on a decent front mount intake..my target with the car is around 280 rwkw and street driven I will have pfc to help the fine tuning..any ideas? not too concerned about price but I dont want to put on more than I need for my goal. how far can the stock side mount get you to the rear wheels? Do I even need another intake?

Don't waste time ,effort and money that could be spent on something else

Lots of ppl here making 280rwkw+ on standard manifolds.

i think he is talking about replacing the side mount intercooler with a front mount intercooler

mate,

280 is a pretty big goal, id say go with a greddy kit if you can find one for an ok price

the kits from ebay (china) will do the 280 but they just dont fit as well

hmm just read your avatar and says you have a rb25 in your s13

in that case maybe do consider a greddy plenum, then get a decent intercooler core and get your piping custom made

the greddy plenum doesnt have huge gains but makes the piping a lot shorter and less clutter in the engine bay

Yeah the front intake plenum depending on which one you get does increase rwkw but not by an amazing amount. ( 10 or so kw )

But apparently the response is 100% better!!!!

I myself have just bought an r33 and am looking at getting a plazmaman front intake plenum an i think its around $1000 aus?

Dyno proven, looks porn and doesn't starve your 6th cylinder like the greddy can.

not to worried about clutter under the hood, I just don't want to buy something not needed to reach my goal. I already have my fmic and a custom pipe kit for the factory intake just wanted to know if I even need to upgrade the intake/plenum when I go with a larger turbo in the spring.

I choose the s13 hatch because number 1 its east to install a cage if needed..number 2 its light and can be made even lighter ..oh and lastly I love to beat up on v8 cars and who would expect the measly little hatchback right.

ok thats what info I was looking for..I already have the fmic and custom pipe kit..

Sorry mate but that is utter crap.

There is no chance you are going to see 100% increase in response.

Myself & Guilt-Toy, and others, have both proved you can make over 300rwkw with the factory intake plenum, factory cams etc etc.

This is all while maintaining as good response and power as anyone else with big cams, major head work, super shiny plenums, supersize throttle bodies etc etc.

infact i'd say a car with the factory stuff (in terms of a street car), is nicer to drive. The factory T/B is not a restriction. And going to a larger one simply makes throttle control harder/less precise. I actually know of people on this very forum taking off larger T/B's and going back to stock and regretting ever changing it (over 300rwkw setups again).

But ye - for the OP if using a S13 might require one out of neccesity more rather than performance.

If you DO go the ebay/china choice, please search the forum about the issues. there are a few defects and so on with them that you need to be prepared to fix before it ends up being decent which might be more work than its worth in dollar/time value

BEST Value intake = std (seen over 350rwkw regularly)

not sue if the std crossover fits too well in a 180sx though. All rb conversion we do into S-chassis use a plenum as it is easier to package (power is not the reason)

If the stock plenum fits use it. As the professionals have said, the stock manifold will easily do the job. Only change it for ease of installation/packaging.

I recently bought a cheap ebay manifold. It was ok... I then spent 5 or 6 hours port matching it to a gasket, smoothing out the runners/transitions and removing all the nasty cast marks... then polished the outside. The flange was straight, the castings were thick where it needed to be and the holes were all in the right spots. It also had a vh45 tb pcd and adapter to the stock tb.

It's going on a thrasher motor... otherwise I usually allways buy genuine jap parts.

I didn't mean an actual 100% its just a figure of speech.

And i didn't say anything about a bigger throttle body just the manifold itself.

I'm not a pro on these things so not trying to prove im right or anything but from what ive seen and heard it definitely does improve overall response and its alot smoother, overall torque gains are good too.

Really hoping this is the case as im really wanting better response low down on my R33.

Looks so much nicer too but yeah its not like your looking at your engine when your driving so i guess thats not for everyone.

    • Stock ECU (or more accurately stock tune) absolutely refuses to go over 10psi and behaves like you have seen. The Nistune is the same if it is the stock tune. If the Nistune chip has been tuned, the resulting tune could be literally anything for any combination of parts. The Nistune just makes the stock ECU Tunable.
    • So stock ECU does not like anything above 10 psi?  That Nistune one is just for "try" if it will be any different, I know it need to be tune for that. I know but YOU may know about these problem but i/we dont. They few little Skylines here let alone people who know anything about tham so that is why iam asking here
    • So now we have a radiator with no attachments whatsoever. It lifts up with a particularly tight spot between the drivers side air box mount and the lower radiator outlet, but if you've got this far you will sort that too. This is the lower mounts with the rad out so you can see where the rubber bushes go, it is a straight shot upwards Done! Assembly is the reverse of disassembly, with blood less likely to be shed.
    • Right, onto the second last trick. The Air Con condenser is mounted to the front of the radiator and stays in the car when the radiator is removed. There are 2x 10mm headed self tappers holding the top of the condenser to the radiator, remove those The bottom of the condenser is attached to the radiator with clips. You need to lift the condenser out of those clips and clear (up, then forward). f**ked if  could work out how to do that last bit with the front bumper on. I hope you can, and you share the trick.  Bumper removal probably deserves its own thread one day once I've recovered the will to live, but basically you need to remove the wheels, front inner guard liners (clips and 10mm headed bolts), the self tapper between the guard and the bumper at the rearmost point of the bumper (same as an R32 that bit), any remaining clips at the top/front of the grill, an absolute bastard design with a plate that holds the top of the bumper above the headlight each side (only 1 bolt which is tricky to get to, but the plate catches 2 places on the bumper and must be removed....carefully!) and push clips between the bumper and guard under the headlight. If you've done all that you will be faced with wiring for the fog lights on both sides and in ADM Q50 RS at least, 4 nasty tight plugs on the driver's side for the ADAS stuff. So, the clips at the bottom look like this on drivers side (looking from the front) And on the passenger side (also from the front), you can see this one is already out Clearance on both of these are super tight; the condenser needs to move up but the upper rad support mount prevents that, and the radiator can't move down far because it is (rubber) mounted. Once you achieve the impossible and drop the condenser off those mounts so it does not stop the rad moving, you are good to go
    • OK, next the shroud needs to come off and there are a couple of tricks. Firstly, there is a loom from near the passenger side headlight to the fans, coolant temp sensor etc and there is no plug to undo.  In my case I was OK to leave the shroud on top of the engine so I just undid the passenger side fan plug and about 10 of the clips which gave enough free wire to put it aside. The fan plugs were super tight, the trick I used was a small falt screwdriver to push down on the release tab, then a larger flat screwdriver to lever the plug out of the fan unit....be careful with how much force you apply! If you need to remove the shroud altogether for some reason you will have to deal with all the plugs (tight) and clips (brittle)....good luck. I removed all of the clips and replaced them with cable ties that I will just cut next time. Also, in the Red Sport / 400R at least, the intake heat exchanger reservoir hose is bolted to the shroud in 2 places with 10mm headed bolts; so remove them (the hose stays in the car; no need to undo it at the t fittings down at the radiator lower mount. Once you've dealt with the HX hose and the wiring loom, there are 3x 10mm headed self tappers holding the top of the shroud to the radiator; remove those.   The shroud then lifts out of the bottom mounts where it sits on the radiator, up and onto the engine out of the way.
