Air Filter

Just wondering wat does a air filter do to your car? does it make it go any faster or does it save petrol or anything, just one of my mates recommend me get one, just can you guys help with this, because he said that its not good for my car me to have a sports exhaust/muffler system n no air filter (as one ive got no is preety old...11yrs)

man, you can have whatever combo you want... it's not that it's "not good for it"... you'll just get more performance with the whole lot... an after market airfilter sucks more air than a standard one and the more air you can get into your engine, the more performance you can get out of it...

You'll get a small fraction more power, but you'll let dust, dirt, pollen, insects etc into your engine which will make it wear out prematurely. So you'll get more power for a while but then things will become worn, compression will drop and you'll end up with a shitter.

That's after it's done a nice bit of damage to your compressor wheel Checking the turbo wheel on any car you're about to buy can be a good way of seeing if a decent quality air filter was used on the car.

Well maybe substitute "decent quality air filter" for "any air filter" I've seen turbos with damaged compressor wheels, I can only assume it's from a lack of air filtration.

if u buy a descent brand Pod Filter than your air is filtered the same as the airbox, just think of a pod filter as the airbox inside out kinda

bugs and dirt etc? ide love to see dirt or bugs get thru my K&N pod, actually i wouldnt see them if they were that small neways, not to mention theyd get burnt instantly with no trace or damage if they got that far into the engine

make sure pod is attached properly etc too

also think about the $170.00 defect notice from police if its not properly enclosed.

my 2c...not worth it without a proper box and cold air induction.

better off staying with the stock box that is a good heatshield and has a CAI and replace the element with a hiflow one..

u do know changing the frontbar, exhaust etc is a defect too

Surely changing exhaust is legal? I mean, you go and get a stainless exhaust from Midas and you're changing your exhaust, yet of-course it's legal? PODS are another thing all together.

I have a POD, custom one made for me on my little Alfa 147. I've positioned it pretty down low, not so low that it's going to suck up water on a wet day, but low enough for it to get a lot of cool air to it (IE far away from the manifold/engine).

AND WOW! It sounds absolutely amazing. Growling, low rumbling noise on open throttle. It sounds better than my newly aquired R32 GT-R!!! Easily, the Alfa is a noisy little revvy car. I am so tempted to whack a pair of K&N pods on the GT-R but I'm not going to do it Keeping this baby stock.

It's a pretty major operation to put a pod in the stock airbox. It can be done but some mods need to be made. That's why most people remove it when fitting their pod, and why aftermarket pod boxes are so readily available. It's easier to fit one of these than to mod your original box to fit the pod.

But franks was talking about the defect fine or whatever and then suggested pod in a box.. which takes you around the pod filter defect problem

changing the exhaust is a defect if u dont have an emission test and certificate for it im fairly sure, the rules are different in diff states but last i herd this was the case. I certainly havent got mine tested, and i have changed my front bar, and pod filter and about 10 other things hehe

ok, yer cos i was looking at gettin a k&n one on special for 79.95 and my bro can install it, so does it make it sound better with the exhaust cos i got a 2.5" exhust system.

and is it worht getting a CAI done aswell? does it make much power i heard between 5-15kw's

no, i wasn't implying put an aftermarket pod inside a stock airbox, i am saying, replace the stock air filter element (inside the stock air box) with a high flow one.

here are my findings when i replaced my apexi super intake with a stock airbox and hiflow element.

on the notice of defects, you live in brisbane! theres the difference! performance cars in sydney are targetted all the time. i goto RBT's and i've had them ask me to open my bonnet.

on the subject of aftermarket exhausts, in sydney, as long as it complies with certain emmission tests and noise levels ie. under 90db they are fine. i believe you can goto an RTA inspection station to have your emmissions and noise checked for free.

GTRboy: they're easy to install you could do it yourself....

There's 4 screws where the AFM connects to the stock airbox... undo these and take the stock airbox out...(you may have to take the top off and the filter out to do this easier..) Thes, screw your adapter plate for your pod on there, and your pod goes on your adapter plate and you tighten the ring clamp up with a screw driver... it'll take you roughly half an hour but don't be worried or anything its easy and if you do it yourself you'll save the dollars and boost your confidence with working on the car...
