hi

wanted to to find out what class of motorsport the rest of you guys with skylines run in, the thing is ive spent the last few years building an rb30/26 t04z (I dont mind going to a smaller turbo, just want to use the engine), but i want to get into more than just track days later on, my dilemma is i wouldnt mind improved production but the 36mm restrictor would not give this size engine with a turbo any decent rev range, nor do I think id be able to compete in super sedans with other people who have unlimited budgets and tube frame chassis cars etc.

any idea's / imput would be greatly appreciated, I dont want to go and buy wheels etc that are two wide for the class that I go in later on.

cheers

it depends on what type of car you have, what type of motorsport you want to do and where you are. there are 2 different organising bodies in QLD - AASA and CAMS. CAMS have pretty strict categories as per the CAMS Manual of Motorsport , AASA sprints are pretty much "run what ya brung" just class cars on the number of cylinders and whether its turbo or not. NSW have a completely different class system for CAMS events which always confuses me when I do an event down there. I have NFI what its like in Vic or other states.

supersprints would be SVD class most likely.

AASA yeah as Harry said you can run in any thing providing you have a full roll cage (NSW you would be in combined sedans - has everything from mx5's and mini's to HQ's and silvias and WRX's and BMW's)

thanks guys, im in nsw. Ive read through the cams guidlines, they get pretty complicated. not right now but later on I want to do more than just timed laps, (with traffic). I know about your car weevil, sold the r33 for an mx5, would be the best way to start a build based around a certain catagory but ive already poured so much $ into an engine that i havnt used yet so I want to use my 34

totally understandable mate! Ryan (BOZ22N) is doing the same with his r33!

What he is doing is putting cage in and going to be running with MRA and maybe iRace. MRA's class is combined sedans and I think iRace is muscle car class maybe?

Otherwise yeah, IPRA needs to be built to specific rules and restrictions.

Go all out, cage it and race MRA @ wakie - you'll love it!

:ermm:

you can't race an rb30 in any cams class except IPRA, and that would require a 36mm restrictor so a skyline is too heavy to be competitive.

sports sedans require original block for floorpan chasis cars, so rb25 is the max there.

I'd suggest just build whatever you like and race it with AASA/Irace/MRA. As long as they survive you'll be OK to run.

?

yeh im finding that out, i wasnt building it with a plan on racing it apart from super sprint and the track day, its just taken so long to get done due to lots of things and im thinking in another year once i get some things sorted id pull it off the road and race it. Irace muscle car division is looking good though  seems like there are a few s15's lm rx7 etc, yeh IP wouldnt work to well, they dont really have a class for bigger cappacity cars that are forced induction i guess thats why the rotary's do so well and the sr20 powered cars get going.

what class do you race in duncan? your gtr has a few things done to it?

yeah I just mean as long as they are around as organisations. All of them are under 5 years old and only time will tell if they have the financial and insurance backing to make it. eg 2 people died in a rally in adelaide a few weeks back - imagine the investigations and insurance pay outs if you are the organisers.

I race in production cars, and although I have done heaps of work on the car it is 99% standard. Other than shocks/springs/ecu/exhaust/cam gears and safety stuff it is all factory including factory turbos, boost 12psi, standard cams, head, bottom end, wheels etc etc. Every new motor is fully measured and sealed to make sure I don't change anything from factory.

When I run outside CAMS I just turn the boost up from 12 to 18 psi but thats it. Its probably got the lowest power of pretty much any skyline on the track.

Its a bit late now....but when you build a car you need to pick the race category before you pick the car or you are in for a world of heartache and cost trying to make the wrong car fast. The AASA etc stuff is different - much looser (or no) rules and much less "serious".

yeh thats what im finding out, seemed like a great idea 4 years ago to build a monster of an engine, now i cant really use it to race with, well im very limited anyway

with Irace i watched one of there races on speedweek, i liked the idea of the handicap starts for the lower powered cars, either way i want to get out on the track with other people in an actual race envoiroment and i like the more powerful cars, was even thinking how the r34 would go if i used a smaller turbo in IPRA, though the 36mm restrictor is very small for a 3ltr cap engine, r34 are heavier than alot of the cars but would have the extra torque, there commodores out there, id imagine they'd be a bit heavier than the r34.

I think your wrong. I'm 99.9% sure you can run in 2A sports. I have looked into it with my local CAMS guy and am well down the 3L road.

As far as Sprints go there is plenty of scope for 3L skylines.

    • I should. But it already uses too much fuel for a daily. You might note my recco for engine chnages are almost exclusively to people who have it as a weekender/summer car. I don't even have room to keep the spares for this one, let alone another car.
    • If I had "perfect R33 GTR" kinda money I would have bought one of the crazy expensive low mileage HJA cars, but I am sadly not that wealthy. I already picked this car out of various Skylines for sale locally, most of which were worse in some way. Only a few cars were actually better but also more expensive. In terms of buying a motor locally, I at least have the option to inspect it myself and juding the seller as a person, and used or freshly rebuilt engines that some people sell are actually ok price-wise. I knew the car was going to require work, but shit piled up real fast and I haven't even driven 1000km yet as the turbo started oiling like a bitch within a few weeks after I got the car.   I assume it wasn't actually me who cracked it, though there is no way to know when that crack formed and if the previous owner even knew it was there. Buying another 05U Block can be a gamble, yeah, but the cheapest PRP cast block is like twice or more money-wise, and billet is 3 or 3 times as much. For now I am most likely just keeping the current engine, as a rebuild or engine swap isn't happening right now. But I am seriously considering buying a second engine and selling mine in return. Might be a sweet deal at the end.
    • Hi all. I need some help buying the correct size banjo bolts for my 2860 turbos. Because whoever installed them tore up the original part, I ordered new ones of this kind, because I just figured these were the most leak-resistant option as I already had trouble with a shitty braided line. I need to know the thread size of the smaller left hole, that is the turbo oil feed connection. I found out so far that the turbo oil inlet apparently has a 7/16"-24 thread, but I cannot find any listing or description of the thread size on this line. I do not have the original bolts. I tried using the bolts that were in the turbos (the ones that were mounted with the shitty braided line) but they sit very loosely so they can't be the right thread. Means either these bolts are the wrong ones (how do they fit the turbo then? no clue) or the wraparound-lines have a different thread than the turbo oil feed itself. Help is appreciated, asking Nissan directly is obviously not going to work.
    • EDIT: PSA to whoever stumbles upon this thread. It is in fact a crack in the block that caused this concern. Just letting you know. In my case, a few cm long hairline crack going horizontally above the turbo oil feed. Classic RB shit I guess
