spark plugs...

hey guys, my grandfather gave me the hint that it woudl be cheaper to clean my platintum plugs then replace them, but... you see, i dont know where or how to get to them, my grand father used to be a mechanic, but retired some 20yrs ago, he knows how to clean them, but has no idea how to get to them on my rb20de.. can someone help me out? pics woudl help alot too.. thanks guys

I found them under that panel on top of the engine too, but the panel is a biatch to get off without taking all the stuff above it off first. I basically unscrewed it but couldn't get the panel out because of everything else in the way.

Is there a quick way to get at the plugs or do I really have to take all the plenum hoses and stuff off first? This is going to be a big job just to *check* the condition of my plugs.

Only takes about 30 mins to take everything off, change the plugs and put it all back together again.

I did mine recently. Pretty easy really.

Disconnect the BOV from the return hose, losen off the hose clamps and take off the intake pipe that goes over the top, from memory you have to take off a couple of other hoses as well but it is nothing tricky, just remember where it came from and put it back there after.

Then you have a few bolts to get the black panel out. Under that you have the coil packs, they should be on brackets in groups of three. Disconnect the cables going to them and pull the, out, be careful with then as I have heard that they are fragile.

and hey presto there's your plugs!!

Give the intake pipe and the rocker covers a quick clean and polish while you have it all in pieces, only takes a few minutes.

I had major problems with spark plugs not so long ago so i consider myself an expert at getting to the suckers.

I am able to get everything off and plugs out in around 15mins.

It really is easy.

Don't stuff around trying to get around the cross-over intake piping just undo the clamp pull off a couple of vacuum hoses undo the bov return pipe rubber hose clamp and fling the intake piping to 90degree's then undo the Ignitor thingo majig (black square thing at the back of the motor) and then use an allen key to take the plate off.

No skinned knuckles like the other VS V8 I had.

I prefer to do the plugs on this motor than all of the other cars I have owned.

It really is very easy. Grab a cold bear and start to pull things off with the radio going :D

30mins max :( In and out.

Just when you disconnect the cables, the coil packs are on the metal brackets bolted on, do you unscrew the bolts of the brakets or the screws on the coil packs???

And do you just pull them off the plugs or what?

RedLineGTR, the coilpacks are held in by small bolts. There are 4 holes on each mounting bracket, but mine were only held on by 2 bolts each. I don't know if this is like that from the factory or if the previous owner CBF'd putting all 4 back in. Two on thediagonally opposite corners is more than enough anyway.

Once the bolts are out, gently pull the coil pack up and off the plug. It's held on by a rubber moulding similar to what holds normal leads on plugs. You should probably unplug the wire from it before doing this, but in the interests of minimising the amout of stuff removed I left each coil pack hang there off the wire, doing one at a time.

    • Me, I would happly spend some more coin on better tyres for my street car  Will they work, yes, of course, but why substitute some dry grip/braking distance, and wet weather grip/braking distance on what is really old tech to save some coin on your "precious" street car In the end it might not be you that farks up, it's the thousands of other idiots on the street that you need to worry about  For a street car that gets some "fun time", I have found that a quality tyre that can handle dry, wet, cold (Canberra gets pretty cold) and hot conditions, which may costs a little more, is great insurance  From my experience with them (driving around Goulburn in the winter) the RE003's are pretty poor in cold and/or wet conditions on the street If RS4's didn't hate gripping in the cold I would be running them always on the street,  great in the dry, OK in the wet, but, they do hate the cold, with a passion, I run PS5's year round now, basically, I've found the PS5 to be a great year round street tyre for all conditions, they last well, and are mid range pricing wise TL;DR. Tyre choice is probably like what brand and grade oil you should use, ask 10 people, and get 10 different answers... LOL
    • Extend the sensor out of the car, put it in a pot of oil, heat oil up. You'll get to 80-120 then 😛
    • Yeah - I tried throwing the formulas from ChatGPT and it tried it's best as it told me that the Formula in HPTuners as requested is a Linear function, but the original data I provided it (resistance to temp) is not linear and thus it kept trying to suggest formulas that would be more accurate in regions I actually want it to be accurate in. But I didn't quite understand it at the time. I have now thrown the data into graphs and can clearly see they're all different shapes. Given it's an oil temp sensor I probably want it to be most accurate between 80 and 120c - So I don't really see much alternative other than driving the hell out of the car and letting it cool down from 120C, noting the voltage on the sensor as it chills out. But at that point if I write it down, well, I'll be able to know this from the voltage. Would look pretty stupid on a datalog or a video showing me going down the straight at 0.265V Oil temp 
    • Yeah, it looks like it's being ran as a constant current setup is my guess. Get some more data points, reading the degrees C on the gauge, and what the voltage is you're seeing out of it. The sensor itself is not linear, even in smaller ranges of like 20 - 60 it's non linear. But if we can get some good plots, particularly at those 5volt steps, it will be very easy to work out, and then I can give you a logarithmic formula if its you need an actual formula. Also, very likely ChatGPT will lead you astray with some of this stuff, as it totally depends on how the circuit is built.
    • So to further complicate things or hopefully explain better: This is a VDO sensor. It clearly does this math inside the gauge itself... because it displays a temperature in C to me instead of a voltage. The signal wire to the gauge is in Volts, not Ohms. I have just teed into this and sent it to the ECU.
