Depends on the state too - check your states registration authority website for details. If it's illegal you can get defected for it, not to mention it can be dangerous to yourself and other drivers..

Merry Xmas!

funny thing this as i was just talking to a mate last night about this, i've been to a few tint places here on the coast and they all have lets say 10 different shades on display the problem is only the lightest three shades are legal???, got prices on the darkest legal tint (not as dark as you may think) and for the same 3M tint the price range from 200 to 280 that included the removel of the old tint though, this is in QLD so may be different in your state!

mind you skylines come stock with a 95% VLT tint on all the glasses stock. so that 1.05 x the strength of tint you're getting as a quick value.

eg:

minimum VLT is 35% so (ie you are allowed to block 65% of the light) you'd want a film that block 61.9% of the light (because it will be made darker by the factory tint already on the glass)... so you're looking at a film that is rated at 38% - 39% VLT to stay legal.

You've got it the wrong way around funky...

35% tint means you're letting in 35% of light.

5% tint means you're letting in 5% of light.

All european cars come with factory tinted glass, that is, the GLASS ITSELF is tinted, like you're talking about above. But they all have a 35% tint option off the showroom floor, and they just slap a 35% tint on there, making it darker than 35% permitted light.

I think the actual limit is 30%, which is why most window tinting places sell 35% tint, to take the factory glass tinting into account.

Visible Light Transmission... so you take 100% of the light and you allow 35% of it thru... that's what 35% VLT means.

A factory glass tint is 95% VLT as it blocks 5% of the light from goin thru.

And yeah I think the limit is 30%, but I've found that in adelaide this is stated in the rules, wheras in VIC its stated as 35% in the docs, so I think it varies from state to state.

meh I think I OD'd on king prawns... I was so happy too that I was havin a chinese Christmas lunch, so I wouldn't have to eat half cooked barbequed prawns... instead I get oh so orgasmic sechwan prawns, sweet n sour prawns and prawns with baby bok choi... oh my stomach feels funny but my pallette's in nirvana...

but I digress... yes... 30% VLT tinting is bad m'kay

I just got mine tinted not long ago and I think it is 35% on the side windows and 20% at the back windscreen.

My mate mentioned that the back and the quater back window doesn't really matter and you can go has dark as you like, it is just the two front side windows you get dicked for. So I'm going back and getting another layer added on to the back and the side quater windows :)

Luckily I don't have to deal with 18 year old Matt's "Learning to wire" stuff in the project cars. And there's only one piece of wiring I'm displeased about in the Landcruiser, and it's about to be cut out... However, the box loads of parts that have been going through this place lately for the Landcruiser... Brake pads Brake Rotors Full handbrake overhaul Wheel Bearings Seals Swivel hubs Steering Boxes Half the suspension joints Shocks Air bags (Ones to go in the rear springs for towing) Water pump Timing kit Lower timing case Harmonic Balancer Radiator Lots of other little seals and shits Gas struts for the bonnet New power window switches And god knows what else I've forgotten... Ha ha ha I have my fingers crossed the pinion seals don't start leaking on the diffs, that the transfer case doesn't leak, and the gearbox input shaft doesn't leak, nor the rear main seal. As they're about the only seals I haven't replaced in the driveline! I'm seriously eyeing off buying new caliper rebuild kits front and rear brake calipers... I'll probably recheck all the valve clearances soon too, and hopefully, it should be all good and sweet to haul some long distance trips again!
