hi all,

im about to get into the process of looking for a new gearbox for my r33 gtr. Ive done a search but i havnt realy found the information that im after.

the situation is a daily driven r33 gtr with bout 400+ kw @ all fours. will get a couple of trips to the drags maybe 3 times a year but it is still driven to and from work everyday.

The boxes that i have been looking at are the OS Giken 1-5 with the strenghtened input shaft, Have seen the retail for about $4000 delivered from japan or $4300 sum places in australia. these are meant to be rated to 800hp

The other box that i have recently been looking at is the PPG Helical Synchromesh gearset. Says its made fro street driven high horsepower cars. Ive seen these advertised for $4800 + gst from high octane racing but im not sure if thats a good price tho. Here is a link to the ppg box from there website

http://www.ppgearbox.com.au/page.asp?paren...mp;productid=61

ok i know that if i go with the OS box im gona have to buy sum upgraded box parts from the series 3 gtrs, But im not sure if i will have to do the same with the ppg box. can anyone confirm this? Also with the ppg box, should i also get the billet mainshaft with it?

what i want to know is from the people who have actually used these products is:

Price of extra required parts

Labour costs to pull the box out and put all new parts back in

where you had it done. (im looking around the sydney area)

and finally which box should i go for?

Thanx in advance

I cant help you with all the Questions but If i was you i would go the OS Gear set 1-5 + upgrade imput shaft...

I got a few mates using these gearsets with about 50kws less then what your making...

But from experience There Very smooth to drive and u wont have to worry about breaking it :( ...

Best option for you is to call around a few gearbox places that have done these box's and know all about them, then ask them for pricing in regards to extra parts needed etc...

I think alot of sau members use award diff and gearbox.

Hope this helps in some way

  • 2 weeks later...

The OS set is a little noiser then a stock box but nothing to write home about. The first 3 gears are taller then the stock set 87 Vs 75, 138 vs 120 and 190 vs 190 @ 8000 RPM. I have found its a "little" harder to keep on the boil on the street!

We're just about to put an OS 5 gear set to the test... with a 860bhp 33GTR and a full day of abuse- read dragracing/gymkana style of events.

I'll let you know how it goes.

Personally I went with PPG helical cut dog box... The missus loved driving it down to the shops for milk, then for bread, then for dinner... you get the picture!

yeh id love a dog box but not for every day use.

ppg box is rated to 900hp they say but i realy wana no what extra costs are involved in each box coz if the ppg one is a staright drop in with no extra parts needed then it will work out cheaper than the OS box

What ever way you go, there are going to be other things to replace while you have the box apart:

Bearings

Selector forks- or upgraded forks?

Syncro parts

Shifter mechanism?

Upgraded input shaft?

The cheapest box to put together in a dog box... Everyday day driving is fine with a dog box, as long as you can drive it properly, it's just the service requirments- dog rings every 2k.

Personally I would lean towards a PPG gearset... local product. The service guys are helpfull too.

    • A few small updates since the previous post and lessons. I decided to do a little interior light upgrade on the 110. I quite like the iilumo items, even if they're a bit of a premium over other brands. You'll also note the Stedi Fogs, that will go into the S15 fog lights as I needed to match the bulbs since I got the new ones earlier. I hope they fit as the body is quite a bit longer than your normal bulb.  Annoyingly, I managed to trip the fuse, which normally wouldn't be an issue until I located the fuse. I can't say I've ever come across this. I had lucked out that someone nearby had a spare, but oddly enough Toyota dealerships seem to keep this in stock. I ordered some to keep in my stash and as luck would have it, someone else nearby tripped the same fuse so I passed on the favour.  I also did a little service on the 110 ahead of some additional work coming up. It's been annoying that Goleby's stopped carrying this particular HKS filter for the 110, so now I need to keep them on order from Japan. I also took the opportunity to install a bash plate and number plate riser. The plate riser is such a cheap but nice fix to help really tidy up the car. I'm tempted to now also replace my headlights, on this car. Both items were from Project Aero.    I also needed to replace the rear tyres on the 110, and after trying to get it aligned learnt that I need to replace some bushes in the front end, so that's next.  Closing out this update with a nicer picture as always!
    • Yeah mate, never miss it.
    • Any going to watch World Time Attack at SMSP this year?
    • Appreciate the correction on the "ground", that will make a huge difference to looking at this. That makes complete sense about AF70/AF71 which is what I had come down to being the issue, one of these. I'll have another look in the ignition wiring when I get a chance next week. I'll also make up a jumper wire for running that AF73 test.  ECU is fine, relay itself is fine, pump harness is fine and the pump itself is fine. I am going to upgrade the Walbro 255 anyway with a DW300 I have since I need to replace the fuel sender and I'm going to upgrade the FPR with my chasebays kit ready for new plenum/injectors/dbw, but I'll get this working first. That's why this is so frustrating.
