I'm after a 3rd brake light for my 33 having dispensed with the standard spoiler.

I'm having trouble sourcing something suitable. I mean you can pick up a Chinese 'special' LED arrangement on Ebay, but I believe the law says the 3rd brake light needs to be 'shrouded'?

I can't low low mount 'cos of the wiper, so it needs to be high mount.

I am probably gonna trawl some wreckers to see what I can find, I doubt it will be easy to find something suitable due to cars having different rear wind shield angles etc.

Any suggestions?

I thought, if the car didn't come out with 1 you didn't have to have 1. But in saying that, the wife got pulled over the other day, as the rear spoiler light wasn't working, and she told the coppa that we are removing the wing in a week or two as it's getting a full respary, and we aren't putting it back on. Well, he recons by law we have to have an eye level stop light mounted on the window????????? I've looked and haven't found to many that are going to fit the curves nice at all, so I'll see how we go. My spoiler has been off now for a couple of years and never once been pulled over for it. So who knows mate, but there must be a law somewhere bout it.

In some states a high mount brake light is an ADR requirement on any car after 1985 , cars that were in factory production first started using them , as standard therefore the ADR. I just recently had to fit one to my GTR R32 , i went to supercrap auto , and got them to order one out of a bosch catalogue book , cost 60 bucks for a 24 led adjustable high mount light and fitted it to rear window . sorted

Yeah I'll go down to supercheap and ask.

I know the law says you need one, also in the event of being rear ended I would worry that the absence of one could be used against me.

Just from a practical POV they are good also. If you go out on a cruise and end up behind a load of de-spoilered Skylines (w/ no 3rd brake lights) it is annoying not being able to see when the cars way ahead on the road are braking. You have to me more 'reactive' - only being able to see the car directly in front - and so you get more of a 'concertina' effect going on, so more risk of crashes.

not long ago when i was trying to get a RWC here in melbourne, my mechanic picked up a simple stick on one like those you get from any auto store, as i also removed the spoiler and because of the angle it doesn't look perfect during the day, but at night it lights up really nice and you can't tell it's not perfectly straight and he gave me the nod and said its fine so yeah, im happy

  • 1 year later...

for those that asked via PM.

3rd light is from a mitsi magna from 2002 on. they are LED ones and when you do it get the harness/mounts as well. sits neatly on the top of the glass.

I went to supercheap and picked up a LED brake light for 30 bucks, Just a 7 inch or so long bar self contained with 12 LED's in it or something. Install was easy, comes with 3M tape already on the light casing, pretty much a basic wire in job.

Works a dream, bright and legal.

    • Working through possible solutions of converting my mechanical speedo.    Anyone know what type of speedo sensor the factory r34 gtr getrag has ? what the output is ? I assume its not a VSS and more a voltage like earlier speedo sensors ? Can an ECU read it ?

    • I can get more photos of it here soon and I plan to make a thread detailing the process. I received the car this way and it sorely needs refinishing. That is probably the most appealing photo of it. Up close it is fading, cracked, and needs to be re-glued. Depending on their condition I'm on the fence between refinishing or making a new set.  Another angle hiding the pimples and razor pumps
    • According to this thread the RS4V with build plate RC40 comes with the R200 diff @ 4.083 ratio as well (mine has said RC40 denotation). We may need to check if the axle stubs are the same pattern as well. The auto subframes have longer axles. However I think yours being a later Series 2 as well, we should have the same bolt pattern for the diff stubs. Unless your upgraded rear also has upgraded axles. Either way, I would not be opposed to pulling the covers to check so I can inspect that  fancy rear core  Also I don't have HICAS. I don't believe that should change things but I hope the people here with heaps more experience than me can correct me if I'm wrong   Let me know if you want to attempt to make this work and I can get some pictures of mine from under the car.
    • It's not that straightforward. For example I have had this code because my ignitor/power transistor wires were unplugged. It knows something is wrong but has no idea what it means. If you want to actually diagnose this I recommend following the service manual flowchart for code 21. Ohm out the harness, coilpacks, inspect the ECU, etc. And again, it's entirely possible for there to be no problem at all but if you're running a different coilpack it'll trigger the code because it doesn't like what it sees.
