R32's biggest problem is this:

The car is so much fun to drive that it leads to excessive use of ones right foot. While this in itself is not bad, the fuel bills at the end of month can lighten ones wallet considerably...

Also, I had an undetected very slow leak from the reversing light switch at the rear of the gearbox - result; one blown box about 2 months after I bought it. (Warranty job).

Buy a warranty is my advice. My car is a good one otherwise. The oil level was low when I had it checked out initially, but no-one noticed the slow leak...

what the first guy said, use of the right foot too much = too much fuel and I have lost 6 points with $400.00 worth of fines :rofl:

the 32 is the one to go for, this was my 3 reasons for getting one

1 - not as common as a 33, I see 10 on my way too & from work.

2 - They are the second best shape in my opinion, only bettered by the R34

3 - Cheaper to buy, so you can spend more money on mods ;):):)

hope this helps, my 32 was in good nic when I got it. but there are things that annoyed me, like the wheels, lack of front mount and exhaust, lack of stereo and a tiny bit of rust on the rear guards.

INSPECT the rear wheel arches of any 32 before buying, I found they all had rust to some degree.

The amount of FUN to be had driving a Skyline should not be under-estimated :(

On a more serious note, there are some downsides.

As mention expect to be skint/broke (whatever you call it in Aus! :)) soon after buying it because you'll either be spending all your money on petrol or spending it on mods.

Other downsides include having to put up with every idiot and his monkey trying to race you.

Expect the girlfriend/wife/better half to be pi55ed at you because you'd rather spend time washing your car than watching TV with them.

And since you're in Aus, it seems as though the police enjoy defecting Skyline owners and performance car drivers in general.

As for the car itself. Solid as a rock. Front lights are a bit dodgy at times, and the oil pressure sender units tend to go south on a regular basis but aside from that you'll have few probs on a properly maintained car.:(

Yeah, just got mine about a month ago.......here's my list,

1. The headlights are a bit funny. I have to turn my switch like 3 times to get all lights on.

2. Lots of 32's don't come with a full set of vents. The plastic is very weak and breaks easily.

3. Rust doesn't seem to be a huge issue, still check the inner guards and where the sideskirts join, as i have a tiny bit on mine.

Other than that they are awesome cars! As Mr R32 M-Spec said, not as common as 33's and heaps of fun to drive!

You will find the main probs with R32's are age related as the basic design of the car is good.

So cosmetically the things to look for as others have mentioned is

- rust in the rear guard lip,

- sun damaged and cracked dashboard vents, even if they arent cracked careful when adjusting them as they may readily snap.

- worn, sundamaged window/screen rubbers, nothing makes a car look cheaper then crappy rubbers, and worn rubbers can increase the onset of rusty panels.

- torn tie rod end boots, and steering rack boots, and gearbox boot.

- worn bushes, shocks and other suspension components

- climate control fascia playing up

Mechanically i think you have to be trying pretty hard to blow a diff, gearbox, or engine, unless they have been poorly modified.

My car has cost a fair bit to maintain as i have replaced all the cosmetic things mentioned above, things like the tie rod end, steering rack and gearbox boots can be left alone, but there the sort of things that play on my mind as either the smell or the increase in wear will catch you out sooner or later.

None of the probs will stop you driving around day to day though.

Even after 11 years the poorer looking examples getting around will be reliable and good fun to drive, the challenge is finding one wiht good paint and panels

things i have HAD to fix over the years....

- rust in both rear guards, easy to spot,

and was pretty easy fix, just starting, rust proofed the thing while i was at it

the cause...years of lights leaking water into boot (lights are siliconed on now)

- replaced rusted catback exhaust

- rear window rubber seals replaced

- replaced shocks

- climate control sensors playing up (i bypassed them, so air conditioning

works without them)

this is in 6 years of driving... cant complain...

yeh easy to hit the roof in the back seat ;p

oh and still have figured out why the drivers side headlight occasionally needs a tap to come on...or a speed hump if im lazy...

    • Have a look at that (shitty) pic I posted. You can see AN -4 braided line coming to a -4 to 1/8 BSPT adapter, into a 1/8 BSPT T piece. The Haltech pressure sender is screwed into the long arm of the sender and factory sender (pre your pic) into the T side. You can also see the cable tie holding the whole contraption in place. Is it better than mounting the sender direct to your engine fitting......yes because it removes that vibration as the engine revs out 50 times every lap and that factory sender is pretty big. Is it necessary for you......well I've got no idea, I just don't like something important failing twice so over-engineer it to the moon!
    • Yup. You can get creative and make a sort of "bracket" with cable ties. Put 2 around the sender with a third passing underneath them strapped down against the sender. Then that third one is able to be passed through some hole at right angles to the orientation of the sender. Or some variation on the theme. Yes.... ummm, with caveats? I mean, the sender is BSP and you would likely have AN stuff on the hose, so yes, there would be the adapter you mention. But the block end will either be 1/8 NPT if that thread is still OK in there, or you can drill and tap it out to 1/4 BSP or NPT and use appropriate adapter there. As it stands, your mention of 1/8 BSPT male seems... wrong for the 1/8 NPT female it has to go into. The hose will be better, because even with the bush, the mass of the sender will be "hanging" off a hard threaded connection and will add some stress/strain to that. It might fail in the future. The hose eliminates almost all such risk - but adds in several more threaded connections to leak from! It really should be tapered, but it looks very long in that photo with no taper visible. If you have it in hand you should be able to see if it tapered or not. There technically is no possibility of a mechanical seal with a parallel male in a parallel female, so it is hard to believe that it is parallel male, but weirder things have happened. Maybe it's meant to seat on some surface when screwed in on the original installation? Anyway, at that thread size, parallel in parallel, with tape and goop, will seal just fine.
    • How do you propose I cable tie this: To something securely? Is it really just a case of finding a couple of holes and ziptying it there so it never goes flying or starts dangling around, more or less? Then run a 1/8 BSP Female to [hose adapter of choice?/AN?] and then the opposing fitting at the bush-into-oil-block end? being the hose-into-realistically likely a 1/8 BSPT male) Is this going to provide any real benefit over using a stainless/steel 1/4 to 1/8 BSPT reducing bush? I am making the assumption the OEM sender is BSPT not BSPP/BSP
    • I fashioned a ramp out of a couple of pieces of 140x35 lumber, to get the bumper up slightly, and then one of these is what I use
    • I wouldn't worry about dissimilar metal corrosion, should you just buy/make a steel replacement. There will be thread tape and sealant compound between the metals. The few little spots where they touch each other will be deep inside the joint, unable to get wet. And the alloy block is much much larger than a small steel fitting, so there is plenty of "sacrificial" capacity there. Any bush you put in there will be dissimilar anyway. Either steel or brass. Maybe stainless. All of them are different to the other parts in the chain. But what I said above still applies.
