Remembering that all my mods need to cost me almost nothing to stay within the spirit of the racing.

Is there such a thing as easy brake conversions? I was hoping that I could just swap over R31 Skyline stuff, but it doesn't appear that way.

I thought that the rear caliper mounts were bolted on, but they appear welded to me... mostly I wanted bigger rear brakes, as overheating isn't the issue for the short tests I do (1 -2 minutes each test)... I just need bigger rears to get the back out coming into the corners...

Also, rear caliper rebuild kits seem to be $75 each as cheap as I can get them. Is there a cheaper kit anyone knows of?

Cheers,

Daewoo

one option is to use 2 sets of calipers on each side, a bit complex though

second option is

hydraulic handbrake setup for the rears will get the back end swingin! disk rear only of course!

Garage7 in Adelaide make them to suit . about $300 and VERY strong

Find a wrecked out dr30?? I sold one with complete suspension and brakes for $50 once

Are DR30 brakes bigger??? Bigger rotors or bigger pad area?

Front brakes are easy.

Use modified VT Dunnydore, cost all up about $100.00 2nd hand, or Hilux 4 spots and maybe Z32 rotors.

D

Interested Dennis, I might get the details from you later... ATM I am trying to get the rears working better.

I've got a hydraulic handbrake... got a cheapie of eBay and changed the cyclinder to a better sized one I had in the shed... but the pad area at the rear just isn't big enough to overcome the locked diff and auto transmission... figure I just need a calliper with more pad area... and increase in rotor size would be a bonus... looks like I'll have to hit the wreckers with my trusty verniers...

Is it normal for the rear calliper mount to be welded to the swing arm???

Cheers,

Darryl

Yes! DR30 rear rotors are 290mm as opposed to 250mm in the MR, but the pad area is about the same. They rely more on the leverage of the 145mm radius and the difference in the mounts is all on the caliper leg.

Is it normal for the rear calliper mount to be welded to the swing arm???

Yes, normally. The only bolt on rear caliper mount I have seen in recent times for a Nissan is the N12 ET Turbo Pulsar and they are extremely hard to find.

N15 Pulsar are bolt on... as are R31 skyline... I unbolted the drums off the back of my N15, and bolted on R31 Skyline rears and they lined up perfectly... pretty sure the rear disks are a bolt on an the N15 Series II and SSS, but can't say 100%...

D,

Just checked,

I still have the caliper brakets that bolt to the rear axle of an N15 Pulsar. I still had the brakets, but unfortunately have thrown away the full set of Pulsar SSS Brakes... that is what you did before eBay when you couldn't sell your crap to other idiots...

The bolt spacing for the N15 rear calipers is the same as the MR30 rears. Don't know what the rotor offets are, but might be worth some investigation... once you know the standard SSS Pulsar ones fit, then you can look at what Pulsar guys do as rear conversions...

Just thinking...

Cheers,

Darryl

In addition to what Dennis (correctly) said, the piston is 10mm (IIRC) larger - ~45mm vs. ~35mm.

You will also find these brakes on the rear of a Z31 300ZX.

The 1982 R30 Skyline came with rear drums. You can remove the drums and make your own rear caliper mounts, utilising the original drum mount bolt holes. Just the same way as people mount discs to the rear of a 1600/180B/240K etc.

The only problem is finding those trailing arms, and then finding a spare pair...

ive used hr31 rear Aarms in my c210 coupe project with r33 turbo calipers/rotors and started 2day fitting hr31 Aarms to my dr30 which will run r33 gtr brembo calipers/rotors allround with the 1 1/16 gtr master cylinder. hr31 uses internal handbrake and later model brakes go on with little fuss.

You mean like the ones that were on the back of the sedan I sent to the scrappers a few months ago :) :) :)

I didn't realise that the Sedatch ones were welded until I got them apart...

At the moment I will persist with the standard brakes, it was really only to try and get the hydraulic handbrake to work better...

Anyone ever rebuilt the standard rear calipers??? I mean all the way to getting the handbrake mechanism out and back in again... I am never doing that again, what a pain in the @rse... you need six hands and exray vision... and after all that, it seems the problem with the (standard) handbrake sticking is probably a shitty cable anyway... :verymad: :verymad: :verymad

Thanks for all the replies...

Why on earth would you want this amount of braking power on an DR30?

You planning entering this car in Le Mans or something???

The DR I'm building will have stock DR rears, 10" DR booster, DR 1" m/cyl & BNR32 GTR fronts and I'm sure I will easily pull it up from 220~240kph.

Sounds like a lot a fart arsing about for next to no real benefit.

Wouldn't your time & effort be better utilised making the car handle & steer better?????

What size wheels and tyres do you plan using with this brake set up?????????

D

easy brake conversion if u have hr31 Arms which can be had cheaply enough if u find 1 wrecking...

Y? because i can and got all the stuff at a good price so y not.

lemans? not at this stage.

yours sounds like a good upgrade but i wanted to upgrade the rears aswell.

next to no benifit? bigger are better are they not?

time wasted? its taken me 2days at the most and im also doing suspension/steering upgrades

wheels are work vs 18x8 & 9s 5stud > z31 hubs

ive wrecked out a few passages so had these hr31 Aarms sitting around and they mount quite easily to r30 crossmembers, the 4bolt turbo half shafts are an upgrade if your running an r200 and the stock hr31 turbo rear rotors are ventilated and of a good size but use a slide caliper. brakes can easily be upgraded for r32 onward twin piston setups by having the rotor redrilled ( if staying 4 stud ) and the caliper spaced 1.5mm with a hardened washer... not hard at all???

because it will be turbo, and who says he isnt doing handling stuff? lol

    • Seat of the pants assessment of the new intake: The car is way less "doughy" when hitting the loud pedal, especially off idle when stopped or in traffic, I did use a cheapo lazer thermal thingo to measure the temp around where the pod filter got its air, it was between 55 - 60°C, in saying this the car was shut off and not moving, so the OEM intake pipe was not supplying any fresh air to where the pod was when the car was at least moving A weird bonus was induction noise on the throttle in the cabin increased a bit,  I was worried that I was actually going to lose some of that induction noise I love so much, outside though, when I got the daughter to do a WOT drive by pass for me, the induction noise has increased alot when on the throttle, not quite ITB doort, but well up there I'm extremely happy with the results and have been exploring the country roads in the region  As for house mods: 1.New front fence is up and is awesome, it really upgraded how the joint looks from the street, and the added security is nice 2. Electricians have replace some interior lights, and with more lighting in the garage, a few new motion detecting lights out the front above the garage, front room, and at the front door, which I have already found heaps helpful coming and going, also now has fancy pants CCTV all round the house The only hold point for power though is the solar and batteries due to supply issues, although this will happen over the next few weeks 3. I have done a heap of landscaping out the front and I'm almost ready to do a new small retaining wall with some nice blocks to replace the brick and cemented in rocks around the raised garden beds cemented in river stone "was the fashion at the time" the house was built. I currently have a pallet of retaining wall blocks and 2 bulka bags of 20mm blue metal to replace the wood chip that is in the raised garden beds around the house 4. I now have 3 big raised garden beds for out the back to grow some vegetables, about 70cm high, 200cm long and 100cm wide 5. My 2 compost bins are already pretty full with brown, green and kitchen waste from the landscaping I'vedone so far, but they will probably take a few months to break down, so anything else that gets chopped, trimmed, and kitchen waste will just start filling the base of the raised garden beds to about 30cm before I start throwing 40cm of good compost, and stuff, for the vegetables to grow in, I'll need a few ton of compost and soil, but the local supplier can sent me bulka bags of the stuff Basically the logs, wood chips and a few strategically placed rocks for drainage, will give the beds some good organic materials down low to break down over time, and they will hold moisture during the warmer months to save the water in my big arse water tank if we don't get alot of rain So, all in all, the car and house mods are going well, and I'm really enjoying being retired, I sleep in too 0700 and slowly plod around inside until I feel like actually doing anything, and only work in the yard for as long as want, which has actually been alot over the last few weeks,  although when you look at it, it seems that not a huge amount of work has been done,  until I look at the before I started the work pics Happy days and good times indeed
    • hahaha yeah. Plan is to get side skirts and probably just rear pods. But going to do them one-by-one. I've got a set that I really like from RHDJapen, but that one isn't shipped to AU. So need to find someone who can get it for me
    • Here's an idea, answer the questions I asked you as they are trying to work out WHY the LSD will be binding up in a straight line.
    • You haven't driven many modern cars then have you? Most of them have sfa steering feel with their stupid electric bullshit steering systems.
