About 10minutes ago, 3 ambulances and 2 fire brigades zoomed past my house into the next street.

I went to go check it out and the services were covering the whole house from view. I went further in to see what happened and i saw a guy lying on the ground next to a car with paramedics all over him. I was yelled at and told to get out.

I found out that he was working on his car which he must of jacked up and was under it. The car then fell straight on his face, killing him. From what i could see i don't think they revived him.

Please guys, after seeing this horrific tragedy, i urge everyone to use a better method if working underneath your car, i normally plant half the car on the side walk for angle, its much safer. :P

Wow sent me shivers alover reading... i was just under my mates car yesterday... which was supported by 1500kg jack 2 jackstands and tyres under the front tyres .... NEVER USE JUST A JACK!!!!

f**king scary shit...

I always put 2 stands and wheels to be extra safe... plus have 2 1500kg jacks...

reason is my gf's brother was working on his old vs commo wagon about 4 years ago, his jack gave way as he was sitting on the ground with his legs underneath the car, if he didn't put his wheels under the car aswell, he would have been an amputee up to nearly his hips...

I just use Jack stands and a 4500kg trolley jack, if the wheels are coming off then they go under there too but more often than not they stay on the car. Stands and jack is plenty enough for me, you just need to make sure your stuff is not old and rusty and is enough to support your cars weight. Oh and make sure it meets or exceeds AUS safety standards

Theres always a risk no matter how you do it, does not matter how many wheel chocks or jack stands used they can still break with out notice, every second of our life you can looka round and spot some thing that in some freak way could kill us, i have always just used a jack and nothing has ever happened, only time something has happened is when a friend had has back end on jack stands, was under the back with my head half under the looking for a rattle when the pin broke, was all over before i could react and the tyre was just touching my forehead with the back of my head on the concrete, moral of the story is freak shit happens.

well lessening the risk is always a really good idea, I've seen an el cheapo trolley jack suddenly let go when holding up a 1500kg VS Calais.

I'd use wheel ramps over axle stands if possible.

I bought some ramps to work on my fairlane a while ago, best thing i have bought, so much easier to get the car up in the air, gonna have to build an ad on to get the skyline on them tho.

i used to work under my car on a jack when i was young and stupid.... then one day it let go when the rear wheels were off.... luckily noone was under it at the time

one of the 35 GTR guys had found a good ramp option. Some sort of caravaning kit.

EDIT: just checked out the honda link... hahah, i actually made some wooden ramps from some spare wood lying around the house after some house modifications :action-smiley-069: works well but obviously an issue if you're trying to take wheels off. But definitely handy things to have.

    • My idle is set at 950rpm though - Moving the timing around 20 degrees is not really what I'd call a calm idle. That said... neither is chop, by definition. The LS ECU likes to adjust timing to hold idle as opposed to air. It'd work, but generally speaking there'd be a discrepancy in the base idle and the IACV would want to move the timing around anyway to maintain said idle. I think I'm just going to keep the timing steady anyway. Preserve my engine mounts.  My aircon is now officially regassed. As the guy was reversing I noticed my reverse lights do not operate, along with my reverse cam. This is a bit distressing, because 100% of guides talk about which wire to connect to backup cams as "the goes with the [other color] wire". Often when doing conversions. Unfortunately the R34 colour wires aren't documented Unfortunately I had a T56 Magnum gearbox with it's reverse switch, which also isn't documented. Unfortunately there's definitely not documentation for people with both of these in the one car. Unfortunately I forgot. After many hours of this, I have a reverse cam and reverse lights again. The wire going through the trans tunnel to the reverse switch had broken. Upon inspection, it looks like this one wire had about 7 spade terminals and extensions in it.. for reasons I cannot possibly comprehend. I also spent the 750 hours required to clean up the wiring behind my head unit which now looks like this: This is a monumental improvement relative to what used to be there WRT triple gauges, head unit, traction control, wideband controller, and whatever the f**k OEM stuff still exists there in various states of connectivity/needed. Next step is to check in at the Exhaust shop to see/confirm how much clearance I have, to decide what mid mufflers or 'resonators' (which are just straight through, narrower mufflers) I can add and hopefully cut out a lot of exhaust leaks, pinhole, v-band or otherwise. But first step will be to 'take a look' before the next step.
    • Fark the AFM card and Nistune, Haltech Nexus S3, DBW, cruise control, flex fuel, dis dat.  
    • It's most likely the bolt/bush where the cover bolts back wore and allowed cover to move forward.
    • Still haven't put the injectors and R35 AFM in so we can tune the bloody thing for the HG highflow it got mid last year! I think I can forecast the upgrade path to a bigger twin scroll, external gate, Haltech, flex setup, Samsonas, dis dat, etc will be .... a while away!
    • Should have taken that opportunity to slot in a twin scroll turbo setup. Maybe next time.
