on friday i installed a profec b spec 2, all is good, got it running 13psi on HI, and 11psi LOW.

last night on the way back home, cruising in 4th gear i slowly put my foot down and at around 4000ish rpm and 12 - 13psi i could hear a fast ticking sound, wasnt very loud and seemed to be coming from the passenger side, wasnt loud but i could hear it and was ticking pretty fast ! sounded like the noise solid lifters make, but ive never herd this sound coming from the engine before. it was running stock boost before the boost controller went in (had the restrictor removed but boost only increased to 11 - 12psi, but made it more responsive)

oil pressure is perfect, and just had a compression test showing 160 - 162psi across each cylinder. engine idles nice and smooth. serviced last month with NEO syntheic 10w-40 100% ester base fully synthetic oil (costed $170 for 6 litres) ive put an extra 500ml of oil in for good measure :action-smiley-069: also changed the fuel filter.

could it be detonation? what exactly does it sound like (sorry if thats a stoopid question)

could it be an exhaust leak from the manifold/turbos etc ? could the extra boost blow a gasket?

it doesnt do it at idle or under 4000ish rpm...didnt realy take it past that when i herd the sound just incase...

if it helps ive got stainless steel aftermarket front pipes, 3" hi flow cat, 3.5" hks silent cat back, M's pod air filters, and profec b spec 2

any info from the guru's would be much appreciated !!

cheers

does it do it free revving? and can you hear any other sounds at all in the engine bay free revving?

also, you are paying too much for the best kept secret being the best oil in the world to which you have exposed on a public forum.

dont mind paying that much for good quality oil...

did not free rev it, but i dont think it was making that sound when in LOW boost running around 10 - 11psi...

no other sound coming from engine, at idle or while cruising etc etc

have a good listen when free revving with the bonnet open and ur standing at the front of the car, see if u can hear anything.

also, i dont mean paying extra for good oil, i mean ur paying about 60 bucks too much is all (from memory). gold is 70 for 5L.

will give the free reving a go tomorow when the car is at operating temp.

what if it doesnt do it free reving ?? but when on load?

i had to get 5litres plus a 1 litre bottle for $165 or sumfin = 6 litres.

How did you fix the solenoid in the engine bay? Is it somewhat isolated with some rubber or just bolted straight to something?

Something easy to try would be unbolt it, wrap it in some foam and cable tie on somewhere - go for a drive see if the noise is still there.

Otherwise - spun bearing? :action-smiley-069:

solenoid is bolted very firmly to the car (under the air filters)

nah def not a spun bearing, i no what that sounds like

i think its either knock or exhaust gasket....hmmm

ORRR something realy silly lol

lol problem solved !!!

its the solenoid clicking away, does a single click soon as its in positive boost, then after that tick tick tick !!! and goes away when switched off

i had it bolted straight to the engine bay, gona put abit of rubber underneath it

that made my day !

thanks again

Not going to get change from 10k on a gearset installed.  $30k++ for sequential.   I know you run the risk of a damaged used one and parts are hard to get but as a street car gearbox its really hard to beat. If you enjoy a more traditional manual, its the choice no question.
