Well the time has come, only about 2 months after fitting the new clutch, ive some how worn my tyres out to an almost un-driveable state:confused: .. which isnt good for going around corners at 'interesting' speeds.

At the moment.. I have a set of 'near bald' 255s on the ass end, and some pretty cruddy 235s on the front.. so ive opted to go a whole new package that will hopefully help me in all round performance, handling, and durability, not to mention a set of tyres that have a decent mileage.

But where do I start? well I went down to the local beaurepaires and he showed me two sets of tyres he rekons are the shiznt.. see below.

Dunlop Formula FM901

And

Goodyear Revspec

Now im not really that big on tyres, and dont know too much, but it did seem that bearepaires only really stocked dunlops, so of course they'll be biased, as thats where theyd make the most $$.

What I need to know.. is what is a good tyre setup for an r33? I have been told 235s on the front and 255s on the rear is an excellent combination, it just needs the rubber to match the power...

So.. can anyone help?.. im looking to buy in the next week.

I used to work at bridgestone in bacchus marsh, it all depends on how u like your tyres, you could go Pirelli but they are very expensive, Bridgestone G'grids look mad and handle great in the wet, they come in ultra low profile as well as mediums. But if u just want good reasonable price tyres in your area u could try that discount tyre place in the industrial section in melton, they r pretty good with price there, i take my hx there when it needs tyres ...

I forgot to mention tat the g'grids are a directional tyre, you will want to get a tyre that is directional, and try and stay te same size all round so u can rotate the front to the rears to keep the wear even ..

The Pirelli P7000 is Da Bomb in advanced tyres... check out dis

But i think that u could buy a a small car for the same price of a set of tese .. hehe

It all depends on your price range

Im thinking of spending about 1200-1300 all up.

also.. ive heard from multiple reliable sources that skyrines perform better with 255s on the ass, and 235s on the fronts..

for performance it maybe better, but when u have all the same and the back tyres start gettin low and u need to replace them, u can rotate the front wheels to the back and put new ones on the front, but this is not necessary thoe, either way make sure u go a good set of Directional tyres...

Here is a site u will like, it lists all the online tyre places in victoria so u can check out ranges and prices ...

I get a more flat feel on the road with this setup. The stock rims

are just cr@p. Oh... and did they tell u it looks hell nice with big

fat wheels when looking from the back...

5hit hey - I was born in Bacchus Marsh......

Anyhoo - When my car came in from Japan, it had 235s on the front and 255s on the rear - I got Kumho's to replace the Jap tyres

Just a little tip for you all, most of you probably do this anyway.

Don't rotate them front to rear. The fronts will last forever even if you drive hard like me. That way you only have to fork out for 2 tyres at a time. Unless you actually put money aside for tyres every week then finding $1000 is easier than $2000. My friend has had the same fronts for 3 years and he drives super hard.

What do you want from a tyre, traction or good wear?

Unfortunatly for one, you have to compromise on the other. I have heard on other forums that the FM901's are one of the most recommended tyres for traction. They are a soft tyre so you will repllace them more often. I have Fulda's on my car which are lasting great but traction is an issue.

I've recently put 901's on the back of mine (225/50/16) and OMG.......

The difference in traction is amazing - although I did have really crappy tyres on there before.

I can't really comment on wear yet cause it's only been a month or two.

Highly recomended.

Yea I understand that.. but what sort of milegae can I expect from the FM901s?

I dont think wanting 30,000ks from a set of tyres to to excessive.. lol

    • Ah! I actually managed to snag a lightly used set.... that aren't so suitable for me right now. They don't work on a GTT without some cutting or creative heat moulding. I thought about reselling them myself cause I didn't want to murder them, but it looks like I'm probably going to attempt to murder them/melt them because I may as well. @GTSBoy @PranK can somebody close this thread?
    • Hey mate,  I have a set, one is slightly damaged but wont be noticable once installed.  Shoot me a message if your still after them
    • I couldn't wait But, the black constant tension hose clamps were too thick and there wasn't enough clearance at the T/B and I couldn't get it to seat properly, so I had use a silver one there I also added some 3" silicone over the alloy bit that goes through to hole on the radiator support as it looked like it was sitting on the edge of the hole in the radiator support, I never noticed a rattle or anything, but there was a witness mark It is basicly done, and I can live with the silver hose clamp at the T/B, I will get a black clamp for the head vent though where it is attached to the bulkhead fitting  It never stops...LOL, only issue now with the shock tower brace is it slightly touches the under bonnet liner now, if I leave it it will either wear some paint off the brace where it touches, or damage the liner, so I removed the liner to see what I have to work with, with the liner removed I have about 20mm of clearance, but sadly the middle part of the underside of the bonnet is only dusted with paint and looks crap, so I cannot have that, but.... as I have a roll of Carbuilders premium under bonnet insulation in the garage laying around that is only 5.5mm thick (we were going to use it on the boys Patrol, but he crashed the front of it a few months and it was written off, hence why he now drives my old Honda Accord Euro), I'll use the OEM liner as a template and get the Carbuilders stuff fitted up to cover that dusted paint up
    • You have a knack for photography my friend. It makes the 86 look like a complete bucket. The 34 went with you to Europe and back. It's special. (we all feel the same about our 'shitboxes' that every bystander seems to absolutely love)
