hey guys

i own a r32gtst

me and a mate got pulled over and defected last night, he claims pulled us over because he heard our bovs..

anyway we got defected for bovs, front mount, and exhausts.. he could of got us for heaps more but didnt

we both got red stickered and need to be passed by a full inspection...

just wondering what else i have done that wont pass

apexi intake (pod boxed)

rb25 turbo

greddy spec b/c

turbo timer

catch can

split dump

pwr radiator

they shouldnt find out i have upgraded injectors fuel pump and nistune will they?

what about

20% tint i think

boost gauge on pillar

coilovers

none standard gear knob

everything else should be sweet

bodykit?

18inch rims?

gtr bonnet?

any help would be great, and if anyone in the newcastle area has a standard exhaust,bov and side mount i could possible borrow for a while or buy would help alot thanks

and we are talking about NSW, ALL NON FACTORY, NON STANDARD ADDITIONS TO A CAR IN NSW IS A POSSIBLE DEFECT, even with engineering certificates.

This topic has been covered a million times, the conclusion that is always reached is if a copper wants to defect you he will, so best is to be straight with them and they might cut you some slack.

You CAN get defected for trivial things like a gear knob.

There have been people on this forum being defect for having a pod in an engineered custom made box, they may not get defected because they think its a fire hazzard, but they use the EPA route instead, and we all know that most stock standard RB's will fail an emisions test purely because they arn't spring chickens anymore.

Use the search function and you will learn a thing or two, i keep saying this but no one seems to use the search function anymore.

and the only mod i can think of thats technically legal is changing an R33 wheel size from 17 inch to 18 inch aslong as spacers arnt used. But even then your not 100% safe as they can always defect you and make you prove there is nothing wrong with it.

ahh also car has to be atleast 10cm from the ground...... but then you get raped for changing the suspension.

If anything if the car looks modified even if it is completely (technically) legal they can always find something wrong with the car get you for not having the gear position sticker being visible, seatbelts retract too slow ect....

This is entirely incorrect, however the problem of ill informed officers being able to write up defects at their discretion doesn't help.

not everything aftermarket but most things on your list there are asides maybe the bonnet and radiator provided its installed professionally....as for the injectors / computer well really depends on how rich your running amusing you have got it tuned? All they really have to is take the car to a defect station and run an emissions test, ive have known people to basically go back to standard everything inc computer just so they could pass.

really its just cops wasting your time and money and they will always find a way to do it , these days even engineers dont help

I know what you mean, but an officer can defect you for anything even if its not officially a defectable item. At the end of the day your still getting defected and you have to prove that its not.

So no its not correct to say everything is a defect, but everything can be defected

My 2c;

apexi intake (pod boxed) - swap with stock airbox

rb25 turbo - leave it, unlikely they will notice

greddy spec b/c - will have to be completely hidden, probably best to just put the stock stuff back on

turbo timer - ??

catch can - will be fine as long as its plumbed in properly (no venting to atmosphere)

split dump - probably ok

pwr radiator - will be fine

upgraded injectors fuel pump and nistune will they? - should be fine

20% tint i think - IIRC 20% is legal...

boost gauge on pillar - if its right down the bottom of the A pillar, it should be alright. If you can touch it with your head (imagine being in an accident) then it will have to go

coilovers - probably ok

non standard gear knob - will be ok if the gate pattern is shown on it or nearby

bodykit? - probably ok as long as there are no sharp edges (think of what happens to a pedestrian in an accident) and it must be more than 10cm from the ground

18inch rims? - could be a problem, there was the +1/+1 rule at one stage, ie you can go one inch wider and one inch larger in diameter (as long as the tyre rolling diameter is the same). But i'm not sure about +1/+1 any more. Probably best to borrow some stock rims with tyres with plenty of tread.

gtr bonnet? - should be fine

Also, make sure there is 10cm ground clearance under the car (exhaust is usually a problem if you've set the coilovers low) and replace the stock bov and SMIC as you already said. If you've cut the bodywork for the FMIC that can be a problem.

Then it depends on how nasty they want to be, if they're not too bad you'll get through with the above.

20% tint is NOT legal. At least on the driver and passenger windows it's not. Cops rarely give you trouble for tint though... I bought my car with everything tinted but the driver+passenger windows, and I gotta tell you. I f**king hate it. I can't see a f**king thing AT ALL while reversing. Thank f**k the dumbass didn't tint the other windows lol.

Boost gauge on A pillar will most likely have to go because even if it wont hurt you in an accident, they'll probably get you for obstruction of vision. Yes even if it's right down the bottom.

They'll spot the coilovers in a split second

Definitely remove the boost controller...

Just change most things back to stock and you should be OK...

when i got red stickered all they did was check that the defects were fixed up, you dont have to get a blue slip, you just have to go to a place that does blue slip inspections. anyone that tells you otherwise is either looking for a bribe to pass you or has no idea what they are doing.

i mean, if they defect you for ride height and make you do a full inspection, why arent the laws to just defect you for nothing in particular but make you do a full inspection? does anyone get my logic?

we already know that the excuse to defect is more a means to check your car for other illegal things, allot of the organised crime syndicates used to and still do mods to cars to legitamise some of their cash flow instead of spending it all @ the casino...

The way it used to be seen is there was a good chance that a modded car had illegal/legal drugs, stolen id's, credit cards, wepons ect.....

Now its different with the sharp rise of customising and modding cars by all people of all ages and demographics.

bikes need everything they can get to be noticed, especially when they have zero lights on the sides and even a small nudge could mean the end of someones life. i've just gotten flush front blinkers on mine so when i change lanes my indicators are noticeable from the sides. my rears are now LED and i still dont feel safe. im going to chop my exhaust so its a little louder too.

and have you ever heard stories of OEM parts breaking for no reason?

what about the parts that come from china?

ive heard LOTS of stories of things like tie rod ends breaking apart - but OEM parts have been built to a standard. aftermarket parts dont, and we're talking about the bad quality stuff because its not like the govt will ever say "only tein, koni, buddyclub and whiteline suspension parts are allowed". its about liability but getting an engineer certificate counters this. if you've got quality parts and its been installed correctly you will pass as well as have a safe and legal car with upgraded suspension. obviously this goes for most other mods.
