Good Double Din Unit

hey,

Im looking at upgrading the stock system in my R34, I want to get a double din so it fits in nicely as a nice and easy replacement to the stock unit.

I want it to have front USB and some connectivity to the Iphone, whether its a dock or just the ability to use the cable and sit it in the cup holder.

I want good quality audio aswell obviously, and want something cheap enough, no more than $600

I plan to further upgrade by amplifying the stock system and putting in a sub.

Any advice on a good head unit to match my needs? Also, ideas for the good sub and amp set up would be nice

Yeah, they are incredible!

I went with the:

CDE-102E headunit - 2 preouts with subwoofer control, 50W x 4, mp3/wma/aac playback, front usb & aux, rear ipod/iphone

SPR-17S component 2 way speaker system - 330W peak 110W RMS, 6 1/2"

MRP-F600 4 channel power amp - 1320W max, variable high pass/low pass crossover, bass eq, speaker level input, 150W RMS x 4 2Ω, 14.4V

I don't know the info of the sub, but its the matching one for the rest of the system.

Let me know what u all reckon, it cost me $2000 with professional installation and all the amp wiring kit and all that.

I installed a JVC KDR606 head unit into my Skyline that I had saved from my previous vehicle. I'm still learning things about audio, but it seems to have near similar specs to the Alpine CDE-102E unit. It only has one set of preouts however, but I havn't gotten to the part of looking at amps or subs just yet. I think it cost me $250. I remember reading on here about someone trashing JVC products and saying they were total crap. I hope mine isn't a crap one. I sounds good, works great with usb and seems to put out some nice power for the speaks I do have in the car. Anyone else used this unit?

The JVC looks nice, Ive heard a lot of people trash them aswell, but all the JVC systems i've heard sound all sweet.

Maybe the cheaper JVC units just aren't all that good, but thats to be expected with anything cheap

looks like a pretty good setup. we what pictures NOW

just a couple of things 150W RMS x 4 is for 2Ω a 4Ω load results in less power

and what is powering the sub

The sub is being bridged on the amp, the set up only has front speakers, no rears.

I know it seems incomplete that way, but its a very good set up and sounds clear with enough bass from the sub that I really didn't wanna bother getting rears.

Wouldn't be much in the way of photos, the door speakers are covered with stock covers, the sub is sitting in the boot in a box, the amp is connected up to the rear of the flip down middle seat and there's the head unit ofcourse, if you still want photos I can take some, but I don't think its anything special in the way of appearance.

Rears are just fillers and they days of 6x9s in the rears are long gone. Too much noise from the rear ends up ruining the sound quality. Most sound quality competition cars don't use rears and if they do it is a very faint sound stage should be coming from the front.

no rears? thats crazy talk. a good set of rears gives balance to the system and what if you have passengers? dont be cheap. personally i like pioneer head units with kicker/ jl speakers and subs and jl amps. soundstream used to be great but have gone wayyyy downhill. i have always run 6" slpits in the front and rear and they've been awesome systems.

      This looks great! Awesome to have the 5 speed with an LSD in this. The Recaro's look like SR2's or SR3's. It's a shame they've been retrimmed as they would have looked sweet in their original colours. I think I'd want my agent to be a little more up front and informative too. I've never imported but I reckon it would make me a little nervous, so the more info the better.

      Thanks for doing that Duncan! Makes you a good person in my books. We don't get kangaroos or wombats here. But we have bats and it's similar. AFAIK it's often the mums with a baby attached that get hit because they drop lower when starting from a tree.       My dream is also to have a proper hoist, but I don't think it will ever happen. My quickjack is probably as close as I'll ever get, it really is very good though.

      Yeah we keep on in the dailies, it is pretty poor how many animals get hit and the driver leaves without checking....have saved a couple of little ones over the years. Bit of a gruesome job though, pouches generally need to be cut open because they are so tight and often the joey doesn't realise mum is gone so they are still locked onto the teat. I checked the modules in front of the DS wheel where an oil cooler should go.... There is the radar unit - that can go for race use) One of the 2 HX water pumps, the silver cylinder. That needs to be kept but might be able to be relocated But the bad news, the big computer mounted vertically in front of the wheel (blocking any potential air exit) is the electric steering computer. That is required until/unless i do a hydraulic steering conversion, and in CAD based modern car design it is not like I can just pop a big unit like that somewhere else (plus the loom would be too short anywhere else too). So, the passenger side is OK to clear out (just use a smaller washer reservoir, potentially elsewhere), but the DS no beuno

      Well, all the best with the new camry It was interesting to hear about the UK process, it is generally a lot more streamlined here with a shipping agent looking after all the import side (noting the exact final price can still be a surprise.....) and I've used a few different brokers on the japan (or US) side, and never had any trouble with any of them....luck of the draw I guess. You mentioned you didn't get the auction sheet (understandable since you bought it from a dealer, not auction), but I always try and get hold of that because they are pretty thorough. I've imported 2x R grade vehicles over the years and both were fine, repairs in Japan are pretty thorough compared to here in Oz.
